Is bizarre surreal urban fantasy still a thing in today's anime? I know that isekai is a big trend nowadays, but what about the opposite of that? Where the main character isn't transported into a fantasy world, but the fantasy world is there, waiting to be discovered? I generally feel that it's more a theme that was popular in the 2000's with things like Persona series Persona 3 to be extact, Fate Stay Night and Melty Blood coming at that period of time. I know those are vidya examples, but I remember this having it's effect on anime itself though cannot remember the exact shows besides Fate's adaptation.

[C] came out in 2011 so it technically counts, but are there any more shows like that? Doesn't matter if new or older really.

I just really miss watching teenagers or young adults fight for the fate of the world against the backdrop of the moon and skyscrappers while reality either turns out to be full of magical/metaphysical mysteries or even better, is breaking apart as the adventures go on.

Backdrop, exactly. All this shonenshit is just the same 3 types of stories with varying backdrops. Watch some old show like 3x3 Eyes, or Ushio and Tora. But eventually realize it's really, really exploitative crap for kids.

in todays anime? not really. as you've said yourself it was mostly a thing in older anime around the year 2000.

i do however enjoy this theme as there are some very good shows that employ it

>The same three types of stories

The entirety of writing is repeating the same shit with a different coat of paint. Most stories in general follow the same structures so it doesn't mean much. It's not about what structure your story has but how well you execute it. You can basically tell the same story again and again as long as the, meaning every story has one even if simple and style are different enough.

>crap for kids.

Also, it's sufficiently harder to create a good story targeted at kids than it is to create a good story for adults, so this also doesn't say much.

I'd love to see a Monster Hunter International or Grimnoire anime. I don't think a live-action TV series could pull off the special effects they would need, and they certainly couldn't get the cast right even if they wanted to, which they won't (Huge Polynesian dude, his hot sniper wife, a tsundere ex-stripper with a body to match, Frankenstein's Monster, the wolf king, a worm that walks for one, and lots of historical people including John Moses Browning for the second).

Oh yes, the nobel prize for literature is often assigned to shonens and sentais.

Anglos are terrible at theorycrafting, they waste enormous time over semantics while the final product is ridiculously banal. All that graph says is that heroes overcome trouble.

>anime

You get 12 episodes at best and basically the term you're looking for is native-isekai.

Persona 3 doesn't have a fantasy world to discover. It has invasive creatures that impact the real-world. Fate doesn't have any world-building either, it's just you getting your censored dick inside a censored pussy.

Why? You can't just say something like that without any elaboration and expect people to take your post any more seriously than an AI's.

I watched Dennou Coil years ago, but I remember it being pretty good.

Watch it or don't, but I enjoyed it.

Another nothing post. If you don't remember a show, you don't remember it being good.

Dumb. As memory fades emotion tends to be the thing that lasts. People frequently remember good or bad things without remembering the details.

Perhaps a matter of semantics but no, I do not believe you remember it being good. You remember thinking it's good. But you don't remember something you've forgotten.
