I watched Castle in the Sky yesterday. I guess it had been a long time since I saw it because I almost completely misremembered it. Loved the steampunk aethetic and how it conflicted with the overtaken-by-nature castle.

I still have to watch The Witches Flower or whatever it's called, I hope it's at least good as Arrietty. Which I loved despite the limitations.
Also, why can't we have a Nausicaa series covering the entire manga?

Literally came here to say that. Only finished reading the manga a month ago and upon rewatch the film has gone from my favourite Ghibli film to a 4/10.

I found out he was a pacifist, right before I rewatched Howl's recently. Kind of spoiled the movie for me, because I didn't get an anti-war feeling from it originally. I got a "fuck you guys I wanna flake off in my moving castle and sulk about girls" feeling. I think Miyazaki is very childish and this is why he makes kids movies.
Spirited Away is mainly interesting if you're new to anime and aren't at least somewhat familiar with nip culture. The kami and their social structure of the baths is a kind of culture shock which really drew me in when I was a teenager. Akira is the same.
Witch's Delivery Service has an excellent setting but it's too long for what little story is conveyed. It's like it sets up a very interesting cast of characters and situation and then abruptly ends without much achieved or resolved.
I remember I watched Laputa when I was very young in the '90s and it made such an impression I remembered it years later. I'd been used to shitty disney cartoons previously and it was a big departure from that. Mononoke too, but I don't remember that very well.
Marnie and Kaguya aren't bad, but they aren't very memorable either.

Howl's Moving Castle is probably my least favourite of his films, it rocks along okay for a while but then he makes up this war thing that's not in the original book to get his pacifist bullshit across. Also he didn't direct Marnie or Kaguya.

I thought the same thing. I'm hardly picky about anime, especially when the art it good, but when I realized how insipid it was I skipped around and sure enough, fuckall happens so I dropped it because I'm not going to be blueballed like that. They could have done so much, but it feels like a very deliberate decision on their part not to do anything at all. It was a failed experiment essentially.
Howl's moving castle was overall good, but the ending pissed me off and basically ruined the movie. That queen just randomly up and decides to just stop the war (which was never fucking explained). Was firebombing population centers just a hobby of her and some buddies? What the actual fuck. I'm sure miyazaki was trying to vomit up his half baked philosophy again.

I don't know if you guys have watched much japanese drama (like live action) but so much of it has sort of similar criticisms by westerners. I guess the argument for it is that it avoids melodrama and the overly grand story arcs that happen so much it loses a human elements in western movies. A great example that I'm thinking of off the top of my head is After the Storm. It's about a divorced father who's trying to be a good father and get his wife back but he's also a gambling addict and kind of a bum. There's some character development but it's really just a story that could happen to a thousand people every day, no clear resolution, things are pretty much the same at the end as the beginning. Movies like that are more common in japan but aside from some indie movies generally not a thing in the west.
Kind of an aside that's not directly a response to what you said but still sort of relevant to the what I was thinking. I think when fantasy and scifi began being classified just as "genre fiction" in the west it divorced things with fantasy elements from literature (for the most part) and then we had a few decades of sff getting kind of inbred and retarded with new ideas and talented writers being kind of limited, and it very much stuck to the Tolkien or DND structures (less so very recently). But to me there's no reason that slice of life fantasy should be bad, it should be able to convey the same human experiences of slice of life and the worldbuilding of fantasy, which are both things I like. I'd like to see it attempted, and ultimately done well, more often in the west.

Interesting, so it's basically a genre. That's definitely a better explanation than I've seen before. Still not a fan, at best it's boring as hell, and at worst frustrating anti-entertainment. Like a dream were you can't run.
As to your other point, I agree there doesn't always need to be yet another attempt at some grand story. The big thing with slice of life stories is they are carried by curiosity, humor and teaching by example.
It's like the difference between drawing a guy chopping wood, weaving a fence with hazel branches, or planting a garden, and drawing a guy in order to teach the audience to do those same things. Only one of those will actually be interesting, because the details and presentation are very important. People perk up when they think they can learn from someone else.

It's really not much different to tumblrinas turning every discussion of entertainment into a discussion about how racist/sexist/white the author is. It's fucking tedious.
Also, "not much happens" isn't a useful criticism. Kiki's Delivery Service is positively action-packed compared to most SoL anime. For instance Non Non Biyori is a masterpiece despite the lack of action.

None of the Ghibli movies are good, even the ones without his name on there. He's not a scapegoat.
I mean I don't know why anyone expects something different. The movies make a lot of money and that's why they're as sterile as they are. I'd compare them to those early Disney animated movies but to be honest Dumbo is a fucking masterpiece that actually utilizes animation as an art instead of trying to replicate real life or sexualize young girls. I love those dream sequences in Winnie the Pooh and Dumbo.
But who cares. Nobody here cares about good movies. You just want to make fun of a guy's intellect because you can't break down how terrible his movies are without resorting to ad hominem. Admit it. Stop talking about a name or what he may or may not have done and start actually talking about the movies. This goes for all of you folks. I didn't claim that at all. Why not actually respond to the contents of my posts instead of some buzzword one-liner? I have no desire to see another bland sterile Ghibli movie for kids and their mothers. But I assume you're unable to actually comprehend good movies when you're unwilling to comprehend my posts and unable to actually respond to anything I say without your bias fallacies. Truly please just respond to the things I've actually said. I already explained to you why I do not like Ghibli movies. Even their most outrageous attempt does nothing for me. I can understand you name Pom Poko. But Only Yesterday is really your second choice? You ran out after one example yet bothered to name a second one. Is the best Ghibli movie in your eyes really a naruto knock-off for furries? I simply do not like how the characters act. They are all so stiff and the propaganda is so blatant it's like the movie is a literal child telling me what to think without himself understanding the meaning of the words or offering even a remotely interesting viewpoint on the subject matter. I did not claim I saw every Ghibli movie out there. They're just boring from a movie perspective for the lack of a better term. They've got boring framing, boring characters with boring dialouge and just overall unimpressive visuals. I'm talking purely Pom Poko here because Only Yesterday is literally a movie that could've worked as a live action and it would be better to boot.
Now this is all just my opinion mind you. I've explained exactly what I disliked about Ghibli movies (yes, all of them) in my initial post already. If there's anything you don't get I'll try my best to make sense of it but don't read things that aren't there. I like it when animation actually tries to be animation. Ghibli tries its hardest to be as bland and sterile as possible and that simply does not entertain me. I am not impressed by their animation. I am not impressed by their voice acting. I am not impressed by their framing (because there isn't any). What do you want me to say? I feel nothing when I look at Ghibli movies. Literally nothing. I'm not invested in the characters. It doesn't make me laugh. Have I made myself clear enough?
https://www.sakugabooru.com/data/05adab5d8893ca6fc470fd58ef9cc52b.mp4 is something that is interesting even without sound or context. I probably haven't even seen the movie it came from but it is also something that, even Pom Poko, lacks.

Alright, if (you) + text is what you want I'll spoonfeed you.
You'd be right if you called Disney sterile, but you fucked up horribly and specified early Disney. Early Disney (which ended sometime in the early to mid 40s) was their most creative period, where they constantly experimented with new ideas and techniques and where their most interesting artists thrived. Most of that experimentation stopped after Bambi, leaving Disney with a safe formula for their animators to jerk off in without fear of dreaded things like subtlety creeping into their work.
The Disney animation philosophy is that if it isn't moving, it's dead. This leads to animators wanking over exaggerated movements, making empty displays of budget and draftsmanship to hide the weak direction and spoonfeed you exactly what simple thought and emotion the caricature is feeling right now. You'll find a couple exceptions here and there, but that's because Disney is so huge and their filmography large enough that someone's bound to get something right eventually.
And now we come to Ghibli, the other overrated animation studio. Ghibli has two huge advantages over Disney: they have actual direction and, like most anime, aren't afraid of stillness. So what's wrong with them? It's complicated, but most important are the awful western fanbase and the director problems. You either get Hayao Miyazaki with all his quirks and janky pacing, Takahata doing his own weird thing, Goro being a fucking idiot, or some other guy playing it way too safe. The animators don't have the desire or the budget to jerk off like Disney's either so they won't carry a not-so-great or crappy movie through sakugafaggotry the way a big budget western studio will.
Here's the thing: Ghibli makes actual movies (some more distinctive than others) while Disney waters down and bastardizes classic stories for GIFbait and shekels. They're very different studios which screw differently, and the one thing they share in common is being famous but overrated animation studios with highs and lows. Me, I'll take distinctive jank including Miyazaki's over Ghibli's safer stuff and almost everything Disney.
>I can understand you name Pom Poko. But Only Yesterday is really your second choice? You ran out after one example yet bothered to name a second one.
Nah, I brought up two movies to see how you'd respond to them. Pom Poko went over your head and Only Yesterday's technique was lost on you, pretty much as expected.
>They've got boring framing, boring characters with boring dialouge and just overall unimpressive visuals
I can't change your mind on that.

>You'd be right if you called Disney sterile
But I didn't. So can you please just respond to what I actually did say? Because I'm not going to read something that starts off of a false premise. I called Ghibli sterile because that's what I consider their movies to be.
>pom poko went over your head
Why?
>OY's technique was lost on you
What technique are you referring to here? You're being too vague and just saying I didn't get it is not a substitute for my boredom. It's an old boring movie that's poorly animated. I don't really care how they did it. But again you're just being vague because I don't know what technique you meant.
>Ghibli has two huge advantages
>they have actual direction
No true scotsman
>aren't afraid of stillness
<it's a feature
Their movies are ugly sterile pieces of shit that try to replicate real-life because they lack imagination and are nothing but silly propaganda. If you actual have anything to contribute I'll hear it. Stop using fallacies. Their movies are boring and proof in it is that nothing in OY needed to be animated.
Again you bring in no unique point of view. I've already read it all before. You don't see me defending a Disney movie here on what they aren't, just that they're actually animated because that's the movie they're making. I've said nothing else. Disney movies are expressive, Ghibli movies are not. Disney movies contain comedy with likeable characters and memorable dialogue, Ghibli movies do not. Disney movies can't be replicated with real life actors, Ghibli movies can. There. Now you can defend these terrible movies all you want but saying I just don't get it is not an argument. I am not afraid of stillness in a low budget anime either. But only because those low-budget shows are for a less broad audience. Only because those lower budget shows make up for it with memorable characters, dialogue or generally expressive animation. These budget shows that aren't just on a low-budget but also a time-table.
If you think Ghibli ever made an actual movie worth something. You're wrong an someone that needs to see more movies.

Porco Rosso, Ponyo, Lupin III, and The Wind Rises had male leads, and Laputa and Mononoke had 1 female and 1 male lead. Only Nausicaa, Kiki, Howl's, Spirited Away, Mononoke, and Totoro had female leads. A 4/5 split is close to even.

I unironically enjoy loli while finding 3D children repulsive. Like all 2D, it's an idealized, perfect version of something that's not all that great actually. I know that nothing in real life can even come close, because anime has been precision engineered to be aesthetically and emotionally pleasing. The only thing my interests in 2D do is send me further down the 2D rabbit hole, lamenting the real world's imperfection more with each passing month.

He's baiting. Just report and ignore. He's probably here to start shit after getting banned on /a/.
Funny it's in a Ghibli thread where there is no sexualized lolis in the movies and is relatively tame in comparison to the average anime.

A drawing of children, exactly. You shouldn't feel excited at pictures of children, be either pencil made, or chalk or mosaic.
Nobody is telling you that the drawing should be saved from abuse. They're telling you that you are a pedophile using filthy art as proxy. And you have no rebuttal whatsoever.

You derailed an entire thread about shit not related to said thread.
You are discussing about characters that have eyes too large to fit properly in the skull and no noses on average.
You are shitting on what is an artstyle, especially where moe style anime when all characters appear more age ambiguous where the aesthetic differences between loli and adult is only by the clothes they wear.
You are talking about a style of cartoon from a country with one of the lowest sex crime rates in the world.
I don't know why you are here and made this thread about shitting on silicon when none of movies sexualized them.
>Deep down you have the same reactions of a redditor.
Reddit bans loli and shota content, you'd feel more at home there.

The earlier anime fandom back in the 00s is more chilled about loli content. Now I'm seeing fags coming out of nowhere attacking loli and banning them left and right on anime fan sites.

People are attacking high school girls now, including thick big breasted ones. There are many that will call you a pedo for liking high school anime characters and they want it banned like loli.

Those people are are SJWeebs that jumped into anime to be ironic "we are so quirky" weebs and want loli and sexualized high school girl characters banned while they virtue signal on their high horses. The ones that aren't SJWeeb infiltrators are long time anime fans that are too ashamed to admit to liking anime because of the loli and weeb elements associated with it but would rather change anime instead of quitting anime.

It makes me wonder why he's here. He not only shits on loli, but he uses weeb as an insult in the context used. He also shits on anime in a roundabout way.
It makes me wonder why he's here if he hates anime and shits on lolicon in a thread that isn't about lolicon.
Even if he admits to liking anime, it's probably that "I only like Manime like Cowboy Bebop & Fist of the North Star" or "Moe ruined anime, the industry used to be manly" bullshit despite loli and moe being very common from the get-go and just never came to the West in those times.
