If their income comes from commissions, then sharing their art can only be a good thing. A commission is a payment in return for a particular quantity of work, and once that work is complete then no more money can be made from it.

The same goes for patreon, at least in theory. You're paying for the artist to keep producing new work, so it shouldn't matter what happens to the work they've produced in the past. It's designed to function as a distributed commission system.

However, in practice many artists are also using Patreon as a paywall in an attempt to sell access to the art they've already produced. Those artists don't get my sympathy and they certainly aren't having their labor "exploited". There's no labor involved in running a copyright monopoly. Labor is only required to produce new art, and if the artist doesn't feel they're getting paid enough then nobody's forcing them to keep doing it.

I should give special mention to the various artists who use Patreon as an early-access scheme and release their art for free a week/month later. While that's technically still a copyright monopoly, I think it's a pretty fair compromise for everyone involved. People should learn to have a bit of patience.

You're trying to use a grossly inefficient information distribution system to fix a problem which is fundamentally an economic one. Why not come up with more efficient ways to distribute money so that the starving artist problem goes away?

because the price of free does not mean that there is not an opportunity cost. there is a whole subset of people who do not feel like committing to the time, however big or small, to learn how to torrent and pirate when they can just pay for the thing and have it. their willingness to pay is high. It also isn't a 1:1 comparison because there is a much greater scale of incentive to buy an interactive video game than to buy a static piece of art. There's even less incentive if the art is extremely niche and deviated from social norm

There's also the issue that a lot of the art and content that's being caged up behind these patreon, onlyfans, and fanbox paywalls is stuff that was free prior to these sites being created. Artists that have ditched pixiv, furaffinity, deviantart, and tumblr in favor of paywall sites are only doing so because there is a monetary incentive. Perhaps justified in the sense of self-interest, but it seems like a betrayal of sorts when the stuff that they are producing is largely the same stuff they were posting for free before these sites popped up.

In other words, they're not using the pay of patreon to spread the cost of commissioning art over a larger base of payers to create a better platform to distribute art that people already like, they're narrowing the scope of who their work gets to to the people who are willing to pay the price of admission. This wouldn't be a problem if that was already the case, but when an artist was seemingly producing for free before (even if they weren't and the price of art was just being paid by commissioners), making the art unavailable to the people who got it for free before, even though it is being paid for by the patrons, just seems hypocritical.

That's wrong. I'm an artist. I don't think I'm particularly skilled, but I've got pieces with over 100 bookmarks on pixiv. I know how much time and effort goes into producing art of any reasonable quality. I've been asked (only once or twice) to do commissions but I've turned them down. I don't have any ethical objections to the commission model, but copyright-fueled rent-seeking is something I strongly oppose. Nobody should have the right to dictate what information other people are permitted to share between one another. If you want to sell information, you have to accept that it is free to duplicate and distribute.

From what I've seen the transition from amateur non-profit artists to "professional" patreon artists has not produced any great surge in quality. It has significantly increased the quantity of art being produced, but in most cases the quality has actually decreased. I've seen good artists start churning out hastily-produced crap just because that's the most efficient way to maximize their patreon income. The same kind of effect can be observed on a larger scale in more mainstream creative industries such as cinema and music. The most profitable endeavors tend to be flashy but shallow. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that monetization has ruined the internet, but most people would probably disagree.

Artists are not a special class who deserve greater support than other humans. If you want to take personal responsibility, your first step should be to donate to homeless charities and humanitarian organizations such as Doctors Without Borders. If a few patreon artists have their dreams crushed in the process, then that's just an unfortunate consequence of living in a profoundly imperfect world. Very few people get to follow their dreams.

All that said, I'm no bastion of morality. I'm just saying that you can't claim to be either. We should both be working on solving real problems rather than shitposting about imaginary property on a diaper fetish board.

I think you need to understand that opportunity cost carries with artists time just like consumers funds. If you want art for free, look at all the quality art on DA or pixiv or twitter etc. Theres a lot of free art.

I think the fundamental problem here is science invented magic.

Traditionally artists whether it be painters, musicians, wandering minstrels etc. did their art for the love of it in the hopes to get paid.

the ideal scenario is they would find a wealthy patron would pay for them to continue doing what they wanted.

So in the days of patronage, if you paid for a piece of art that art is the patreon’s who paid for it. they then could do what you wanted to it

(sell it, burn it, enjoy it etc.) but there was only one the one you paid for, further patronage would be to continue new works.

Unfortunately with the events of recorded media whether we talk audio or or now digital, photocopies etc.

artists can infinitely duplicate their work, they are essentially stealing from the patron who commissioned that specific work, thus lowering its value.

basically artists double dipping

Unfortunately for them the double dipping also means that other people can copy that work.

Basically what this means, is for the artists they get money they don't deserve it because what used to be a single use item (piece of art) can now be replicated with ease without spending the man hours required to mass produce it.

That said they need to understand the reality that other people are going to replicate that art.

If you're an artist and you don't factor in potential loss (just like a business does with shoplifting, slippage etc.) then that is the artists problem.

They knew the rules of the game when they started, if they don't like it they can go back to doing art the old-fashioned way, (not digitally, no recordings etc.) its hard to pirate a sculpture etc.

Then you add the fact that now these easily copied works are digital ones and zeros/ information and you have to contend with the faction of people that believe information should be free as its the pro-democracy/anti-authoritarian argument.

I'm not saying artists shouldn’t be paid for their work, but morally they should only be paid once for their work and continue working on new art.

I understand that's not a viable business model for most people but as we see the market does correct itself.

Despite the pattern piracy if an artist is not making enough they stop doing it.

no one is forcing them at gunpoint to continue their art when it's unprofitable but the flipside is they can't force people to pay for their art.

yiff.party is only for patreon. there's no actual way for us to see his stuff unless someone leaks it. also for how it would show the process on your bank's stuff, it just shows it that you paid to pixiv fanbox, doesn't show the account that you paid to specifically at all and it doesn't name any names it just appears as "PIXIVFANBOX" , so you don't really need to worry. it wouldn't say "diapered children fetishy drawings" lol. but I didn't even know that artist had a fanbox, good to know.
