The Amazing World of Gumball is a ballsy enigma. It manages to put a smile on my face a way few animations have ever done
Needless to say, it's become one of my go to shows when I get into a little space.
<Richard and Anise come to mind especially.
Richard seems to be an extremely infantalized corruption of Peter Griffin (Homer?) and yet Nicole seems to not only indulge him but somewhat encourage him to remain himself (the episodes The Gi comes to mind but she acts that way in other episodes before and after. She even encouraged Gumball to remain somewhat babyish in The Meddler after telling him to act more mature in a previous episode)
Anise on the other hand is in some ways Richards polar opposite. He's tall, obese, stupid almost beyond belief and a grown man.
She's short, small, the most intelligent Watterson, and a little girl.
And yet she exhibits the same infantile tendencies as her father despite her age (she's 4…)
She seems to have a Stewie Griffin thing going on, and what I mean by that is, she's vastly intelligent and mature beyond her years and yet she still acts somewhat babyish, she's always seen either sitting in a high chair or a stack of books and she's obsessed with Daisy the Donkey, she seems to be super attached to her Daisy Plush. On the other hand, she makes a big deal about not wanting to be forced back into diapers in "The Responsible" (I thought it was kinda sus on Gummypuss' part when he slipped the diaper back into his pocket instead of simply tossing it aside or something…but it ended up coming into play later in a funny way)
Speaking of Gumball himself, Theres an episode (I wanna say "The Club) in which a group of characters reveal secrets about Gumball and his past including his middle name (Trisha) and the fact that he had to wear diapers until he was 11 (with him being 12 currently). I thought it might have been an offhand reference but his family confirms his middle name later in the episode (with it being somewhat retconned much later to Tristopher) leading me to surmise that all his other "secrets" were indeed facts.
At the end of the day I wouldn't say the characters are straight up about that life…like us per say….but if you're a young person looking for some semblance of acceptance (or maybe a somewhat justification in your feelings) you'll find something here to latch on to.
I just wish a show like this was around when I was still actually in its target audience.
