From someone who actually had lectures for years on the subject.
They charge a shitload for the newest drugs, which they worked on for years.
Imagine it like this.
1 in 1000 projects (each costing a shitload of millions) has an effect in the lab they desire.
1 in 100 of those working will be able to be used on humans.
Which one of these thousands of projects will work is not clear before. It is an immense investment and they have to make the money back in 3-4 years in which they have the rights for the drug.
Without them none of the modern drugs would have been invented. Those are people who gamble immense amounts of money to get a return at the same time helping humanity for possibly as long as we exist with their advancements, which in a few years after they can sell the drugs are open for cheaper copies.
The big ones are those who won the gamble and reinvest their gains into research for more new drugs, helping to treat illnesses and 5 years down the line will be replicated for much cheaper.
The money is not in meds older than 10 years or diapers which anyone can make.
The big money is in the new drugs and their licensing.
But if you feel better not supporting people who use their gains for medical research from an ideological basis, refuse their drugs when you need them and go die off Hepatitis instead.
