So remember when Himouto Umaru chan ended its run in its publishers magazine but got picked up under another label as "Himouto Umaru Chan G"?

I got reminded about it the other day and wondered why scan teams didn't keep up. Turns out it didn't last a year and got cancelled.

Boy talk about a fad running out of steam fast huh?

Shame poor Ebino will now be forever alone. Big RIP.

Looks like no other scanlators have picked up his other works that wasn't Himouto related and the ones that were, there seems to be no hint of completing the ones left unfinished. Looks like he is continuing the hikikimori theme with his new work Maid in Hikkomuse. Looks like Sankaku Head's career is sankaku dead. Unless he produces a new hit in the next 5 years better than Himouto, I'm doubtful we'll hear much from him again.

Switching magazines is often quite bad for any series. For something like Umaru, which is a pretty one note premise that was already turning people away after only a few episodes, it must have been especially disastrous.

I tried to be Watamote with none of the charm, then Watamote became something completely different (much worse, at that) and the show had no one else to copy.

 No.935599

I could have tolerated Umaru if she didn't treat her brother like shit. She's one of the closest 2D recreations of a 3DPD imouto.

>Ebina will now be forever alone

But that's wrong. She had her own spinoff series without a trace of Umaru, and thus leagues better than the main manga. Lasted 18 chapters but ended conclusively with her four friends swearing to stick together for life.

>That doesn't count because she doesn't get nii-san.

A life with nii-san would be a life with Umaru. It wouldn't have been a victory.

The duality of man.

 No.935705

The author fucked up, he had a million opportunities to make "Umaru eats shit and learns a lesson" chapters but instead she just wins every single time without putting any effort into anything, she just blackmails her brother and does things perfectly without trying too hard. That gets old fast.

The hamster form is very aesthetically pleasing, I was even tempted to get a nendo, but how long can one cute version of a reviled character keep a series afloat? Not even the eleven with their legendary shit taste maintained interest in her.

 No.935710

>>935705

Umaru could have still been a lazy shit who loves to eat junk food and play vidya all the time as long she wasn't completely annoying and downright evil to people around her. Like, if she just had a decent relationship with her brother and used her natural gifts to help him out, like helping him study at the least, then the gimmick could have been drawn out more easily instead of wearing on nerves immediately.

Why don't people understand unsympathetic protagonists?

 No.935740

>>935726

There is a recent trend of people screeching whenever a character that isn't supposed to be likeable turns out to be unlikeable, but Umaru doesn't fall under that clause because she's the lynchpin of the entire show. You can't base an entire show around an unlikeable cunt who also has her way all the time and expect it to have lasting appeal. You don't have a story when you do that, you just have a premise that will hook people for a time.

It's a shame because the author can do better than this, the Ebina spinoff is genuinely charming.

Season two was the best because it had very little to do with Umaru herself. It was all about the other characters, and they are all sympathetic and great.

 No.935743

>>935726

Unsymapthetic protagonists work if they face adversity or are entertaining to watch. Umaru was very annoying and became hateable (which can be done in a way that's entertaining) enough to make people not want to read her manga or watch her anime.

 No.935745

>>935741

Funny only gets you so far. Even a slapstick protagonist has to be relatable in some way. Umaru is pretty much the opposite of relatable because of her perfect side. A comedy character is supposed to be the bullied, not the bully, and that's why so many people hate her.

>>935742

Yes, the side characters were all pretty good, which is why I hope the author gets to make another series that isn't centered around the worst idea for a protagonist.

 No.935748

Umaru was a cunt and I'm glad the series went out with a whisper.

 No.935753

I thought Ebina had her own spin off series and won.

I hope they animate that.

 No.935781

Good, it was Reddit the anime if there ever was one, but it was so bad even they thankfully didn't want it.

 No.935870

>>935745

"Relatable" is a meme, anon, and it's the modern bane of media.

Umaru's problem is that she didn't have more comeuppance or getting bullied/redeeming herself somehow, while also advancing the plot or development.

 No.935872

Good riddance.

 No.935876

>>935870

Why does she need to get a comeuppance? Not everything's a morality play. It was just a light comedy series about a throughly awful human being. It was funny.

 No.935885

>>935876

Commeupance isn't about morality, far from it. It's about an unlikeable character getting to be someone the audience can like after all. It's not a commentary, it's storytelling.

 No.935887

>>935876

Because not many will find her traits funny, even moreso if she's the main character, and in an industry where these works want to have wide mass appeal, it will suffer in sales or recognition.

Compare King of the Hill and the Goode Family from the same creator. King of the Hill throws many jabs at a certain group, conservative Southern Americans, but without being too mean-spirited, also they're likeable and memorable.

Goode Family now throws jabs at a liberal family, and to many stereotypes they have, like veganism, always wanting to help out others even if it's detrimental, a more conservative grandfather that disapproves, a sexually active daughter that's a total hypocrite and only does good deeds for the attention, them forcing a dog to be vegan even if he's clearly unhealthy as hell. I can buy the idea that real life groups protested about this portrayal, but when you watch a couple episodes as an outsider, it's just no too appealing or funny, because it's more like running a checklist, but the characters don't have the same good traits as KotH, especially when they go back to square one. Even if you're supposed to hate them, you have to put other elements to balance it out. In wrestling, there's a difference between "he's the evil guy, I must boo him because he's evil, therefore he's not good" hate, and "please fuck off and never step on the ring or appear in my tv" hate.

 No.935935

>>935870

It's not even comeuppance or anything, compare Umaru to the MC of Sabagebu who is also a total cunt and gets away with it.

It's that Umaru is just not funny but simply annoying.

>Goode Family

was entirely too accurate without making the characters have personality of their own. They weren't characters so much as very painfully accurate prophecies of what liberals would turn into at the fullest extent.

Umaru was trash because she got away with her awful behavior at the detriment of her brother, and she never SUFFERED as either the cause of this or as a consequence of it.

I read a doujin once about a girl who was viciously raped when she was younger, leaving her broken and emotionally numbed. She lived with her big brother and slowly came more out of her trauma, but as she did she became highly dependant on him and would basically be a kuudere/stoic umaru. She would even mention something like

>Are you going to make me go outside? What if I get raped again?

She was also an awful NEET but it was a consequence of her trauma, which left the brother in a sour way (until character development happened and she grew to be more independent).

The perfect parallel to Umaru really is what people mockingly called it--anime Garfield, because she's a selfish ass for no reason and always gets her way by hook or crook.

Compare her to Tomoko from the Watamote anime. Both are bad people but one of them, while also being relatable to a sometimes painful degree, actually feels the consequences for her actions and throughout the series she shows a level of growth that never goes away. I mean, it's incredibly incremental growth but it's development all the same.

Umaru wanted to be a gag comic/anime but by making the selfish NEET have NO REASON for her actions and also making her the most perfectest, lovablest girl ever--which isn't a farce, by the way, it's real--it completely destroys the conceit of the show and makes her insufferable.

If Umaru had a reason for her behavior and showed growth, or if she at least felt sincere (like Tomoko) instead of being some hybrid of popularity and NEET garbage, both she and the show would have been better. It could have been so much better. It doesn't need to be a drama or get into hard subject matter, nor did it need to be a Watamote rip-off. Just make her a faker, make it so she really isn't popular and super smart and beautiful etc. all in one. Make her a great actress hiding her true self and make her true self have a reason for existing and forced into character development.
