was entirely too accurate without making the characters have personality of their own. They weren't characters so much as very painfully accurate prophecies of what liberals would turn into at the fullest extent.
Umaru was trash because she got away with her awful behavior at the detriment of her brother, and she never SUFFERED as either the cause of this or as a consequence of it.
I read a doujin once about a girl who was viciously raped when she was younger, leaving her broken and emotionally numbed. She lived with her big brother and slowly came more out of her trauma, but as she did she became highly dependant on him and would basically be a kuudere/stoic umaru. She would even mention something like
>Are you going to make me go outside? What if I get raped again?
She was also an awful NEET but it was a consequence of her trauma, which left the brother in a sour way (until character development happened and she grew to be more independent).
The perfect parallel to Umaru really is what people mockingly called it--anime Garfield, because she's a selfish ass for no reason and always gets her way by hook or crook.
Compare her to Tomoko from the Watamote anime. Both are bad people but one of them, while also being relatable to a sometimes painful degree, actually feels the consequences for her actions and throughout the series she shows a level of growth that never goes away. I mean, it's incredibly incremental growth but it's development all the same.
Umaru wanted to be a gag comic/anime but by making the selfish NEET have NO REASON for her actions and also making her the most perfectest, lovablest girl ever--which isn't a farce, by the way, it's real--it completely destroys the conceit of the show and makes her insufferable.
If Umaru had a reason for her behavior and showed growth, or if she at least felt sincere (like Tomoko) instead of being some hybrid of popularity and NEET garbage, both she and the show would have been better. It could have been so much better. It doesn't need to be a drama or get into hard subject matter, nor did it need to be a Watamote rip-off. Just make her a faker, make it so she really isn't popular and super smart and beautiful etc. all in one. Make her a great actress hiding her true self and make her true self have a reason for existing and forced into character development.
