Can some kind anons tell me if these two companies put out good work? I'm avoiding Viz since they butcher a lot of stuff

Do these two have a good track record/release stuff uncensored and properly translated?

>'Professionally' translated manga

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say "no"

Learn Japanese or accept the fact that you're getting a rough translation.

The ones I've bought or pirated scans of from Seven Seas are Made in Abyss and Yagate Kimi ni Naru.

In MiA I didn't notice any censorship, loli nipples and all. On the other hand, they had some quality-control issues, at least in the first volume (e.g. Abyss map had two layers labelled as the fifth), and despite one instance where "Robo-kun" was used before Reg got his name, every other time was "Robot boy", and the oversight drew even more attention to the fact they weren't using "robo-kun". Also, they are apparently using "they" not just for Nanachi, but even Marulk. I can't say I noticed either way, and I don't have my copy handy at the moment to check.

In YagaKimi's first couple volumes they used an awful Western comic flair to the typesetting, by which I mean the off-beat boldfacing and italicizing of certain words. It got toned down and eventually disappeared in later volumes though. Other than that, nothing conspicuous, aside from questionable decision of translating the word "takoyaki".

I don't read many official translations for obvious reasons, so I can't speak about anything else SS has done, nor anything at all from Vertical.

I will say Yen Press did alright with Girls' Last Tour. Nothing objectionable I noticed there. Worth downloading scans over reading the fan translation, due to better image quality.

I read two volumes of the Houseki no Kuni official translation from Kodansha, since the fan translation for those chapters was Google Translated and badly typeset. They made the awful, awful decision of referring to Steven Universe on the back, but if you avoid judging the book by its cover, the actual TL was alright. They did a decent job of dealing with the tricky pronoun issue by simply not using them, which wasn't awkward like you might imagine. No idea on the six or seven volumes I didn't read though.

What was it? Octopus balls?

"Fried octopus balls", I think it was.

It was bizarre because not only did they keep honorifics, but even "kouhai" was left untranslated, which is often changed even when it's more familiar counterpart "senpai" is kept.

This. The true Patrician path to consuming foreign-language media is to know the language, at least to an appropriate adequacy.

Not sure of those those companies but I know of Kodansha which is connected to Vertical as one of their branches. In Negiho, they actually used the line "Bazinga" as a replacement for a certain japanese joke. They did list their reasons in the back for why they chose it but when I saw that, I stopped buying from them. I would guess the quality is just about as similar throughout the pro translation community.
