Mecha has been struggling for almost a decade now. If it hasn't got the Gundam name on it then it doesn't have much of an audience. We were seeing 1, maybe 2 shows a season having mecha in them but even that is drying up or being sidelined. This season we have a series who's plot hook is mecha but the actual series is just a fag romance with the mecha pushed as far into the background as 5 seconds of bad CGI an episode can get.

FAG and Mazinger girls looks to be the final nail in the coffin for the genre from what I can tell. These series sell to the harem market and can have mass produced figures with head swaps and armor swaps to recycle the same design near infinitely. The last few seasons mecha series look to have been replaced by these, which is replacing the Build fighters/Danball senki market which was all that mecha had left.

Where does mecha go from here as a genre? Is it just a slump or did the increased cost of designing robots over just a harem cast kill it?

If you mean shows where mecha are the focus, the reason you don't see those anymore is probably the same reason you don't see sci-fi in general: the future is bleak. There's probably a lot of smaller reasons that contribute to it, like mecha being harder to animate without looking like complete garbage compared to humans and magic, but it probably mostly still comes down to changing tastes and what's popular at the moment. Fantasy is obviously in a huge boom right now.

Genres come and go right now everything is Isekai. Some boom more than others with the semi growth of monster girl popularity a few years back basically fading as fast as it came.

I miss zombies and wish for more good zombie mangos.

Is fantasy on a boom or is it the same shut in appeal we're seeing plastered onto fantasy? The harem genre is appealing to the hikkimoris and they're the primary market for MMORPG animes which is all fantasy really is these days.

Is there a good zombie anything now? Zombies should be like a natural disaster that collapses civilization. Can't go outside but can't stay in your shelter forever type of scenario. That was always their strength and it lead to really good high tension personal drama. It's a shame 28 days later was so popular so now Zombies are just generic bad guys to shoot on mass.

And then I immediately lost interest. There's already far too much moe blob crap flooding the market now. I don't want the model kit companies to put resources into it instead of robots. If it does too well the model kit side of mecha will be as dead as the animu side. Are there even any mecha mangos outside of Gundam ace now?

It's always been a child's genre. For instance, Super Sentai still has giant robots and is still marketed to little boys. It's /a/'s fault for not paying attention to the genre in full instead of expecting the industry to make mecha more in line with /a/'s sensibilities.

See, this is the type of ignorance I'm talking about. We've been getting "moe blob" shit for well over a decade, then these stragglers who only grew up watching "manime" and toonami shit and who most likely dropped out until streaming shit allowed normalfags to return to the medium completely obvious to how things changed, for better and worse.
