Normalfag tier AAA games are what is considered hardcore gamer material in Japan, the same way watching shounenshit or the odd FOTM anime like Franxxx or Dragon Maid makes you a massive weeb in the west. You'd need to be a pretty serious gaming otaku to be familiar with good western games, especially now that they're so few and far between. I mean you'd need to be fluent in English for one thing. And even if you are, and you're also a mangaka, none of the people reading your manga are going to get your references unless they're still to more recognizable games.
