Certainly there before but I feel like it really embodies them. Im not gonna say shit thats gonna get me popular on /a/ but whatever:
>1: Awful characters with a focus on stock archetypes
This is the A,B,C, and D of why I find most anime insufferable. I understand character archetypes but these girls are obnoxious and annoying. I feel like I want to whack each one with a plank with a nail on the end. Again this was always present before, but I feel like this is the concentrated annoyance. The bitch that led on a guy so she could get information while maintaining the most UNDESERVED level of self satisfaction pissed me off so much.
>2: Fanservice as a crutch
This especially is gonna get me shit. But Il repeat it for the folks in the shortbus: Im not against sexy characters. But Anime has been more and more dependant on using fanservice as a crutch. This has reduced character variety, has deflated previous fanservice, and means that any interesting shit in a show is always taken a back to another forgettable waifu.
Im so, so so tired of waifus. Its a joke thats progressed way past the point of it being funny. Their so dull, their so samey, and always takes the place of interesting content or character building.
>3: Boring action scenes and powercreep.
The characters tend to overcome any issues with brute force or just another powerup. Again also present before, but I feel like this is the first time I see it coupled with this much effort as well as a much older target demographic. DBZ, yeah thats for babies. But this is made for a much older demographic and feels like this follows the anime industries decline as it shifted from being a general medium with stuff for everybody to primarily being for otaku or otaku lite. So much pretty looking animation is wasted on really boring resolutions, and nothing is given a sense of weight it deserves.
I feel like the anime is like a pal you always knew to be a drinker, and that made him fun to hang out with sometimes. But then you realize that he has a serious drinking problem, and is using ironic bullshit to deflect from dealing with the issues. He spends more and more time in delusion and isolation because he's built himself an entire fantasy world.
As for something I miss: Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade
Something on that level of treating itself with respect. Its been 20 fucking years.
