The official ones are fine. They're accurate, typeset signs with some degree of effort, keep honorifics and gobi and don't seem to shy away from retaining Japaneseness. Asenshi tends to "localize" their scripts to the same degree as CR or Funi does on average, but for this show the subs are already well above average.

I have a difficult time understanding how /a/ is plagued with so many casuals that would actually defend crunchyroll shit subs over known and reliable fansub groups.
CR subs are some of the most horrendous abominations to have to go through and any chance at alternative subs from a decent sub group should be taken. I know none of them are perfect, but if you want perfection you ought to double down on your moonrune lessons. Plus, I've started noticing a trend among subgroups where they have been including two sub tracks -one with honorifics, one without - to make everyone happy.
No.920693
This was some gay shit indeed. I'm not too impressed with the lack of cute girls and the abundance of bared male buttholes. Yurikuma was a lot cooler with its bullshit while at the same time delivering 0, or at worst 1 faggot crossdresser.

There's only one faggot defending CR and that's me. I'm aware of how shit they are 99% of the time but I'm not going to blindly hate them and blindly praise Asenshi just because they're fansubs. Whoever is working on this show did a respectable job, and I've spotted instances of CR tier "localizations" in Asenshi's HisoMaso, LWA and Yurucamp just off the top of my head.
Frankly I don't know how you could improve on CR's subs of this show besides cosmetic changes like actually typesetting signs because the script is absolutely fine in this instance.

I have a difficult time understanding how /a/ is plagued with casuals who're too busy with their factionalism to decide for themselves whether a sub is actually good or bad. It makes no difference who made it. We're all torrenting anyway; it's not like CR's getting money for it if you use their tracks.
"It's CR" is not an argument, and "it's a fansub" is not an argument. Point out flaws and merits. As others have already pointed out, Asenshi has a history of veering from translation to localization, and as others have already pointed out this instance of CR subs lacks many of the things that make people hate CR subs.

I wonder if the homosex is going to be the main running theme throughout this show, or if it's just about "hidden desires" in general. I see that Ikuhara also storyboarded for Kokoro connect which also had the same theme. I wonder if it's a specialty of his. In any case the animation is pretty good and it seems interesting enough, rampant faggotry aside.

Good job anon. You earn big respect from me for this levelheaded thinking.
I should clarify my position in my general support of fansubs like Asenshi. Having watched far too much seasonal anime, the official release subs have reached a point of total incompetence and ineptitude. This hardly needs elaborating but I will use one example. Pic 1 shows Asenshi vs the official sub. The official subs aren't even talking about the right character. Not only is the meaning of the scene wrong, it is literally the opposite of what it should be. Someone watching would take the reverse meaning of what the creator intended away from the scene. Hard to get any worse than that. Unfortunately, this isn't even a rarity in this day and age. As such, this is why I tend to always favour fansubs over official unless there is something wrong with the subgroup, ie. they put crazy SJW stuff in.
Now to Ikuhara. Pics 2-4 show Asenshi vs CR subs for Yuri Kuma Arashi. I think CR did a fine job translating the show, but lets compare. Asenshi successfully incorporated the bear puns into their script and CR didn't even try. The viewer wouldn't even realise there was a pun with CR, so some meaning is lost. Anecdotally, I just showed the Asenshi translation of Yuri Kuma to someone and they were complaining about memesubs. The english speaking viewer wasn't even able to tell that those were actual puns and immediately jumped to the defensive position of 'meme fansubs'. Food for thought.
Now a point against Asenshi. In Pic 4 changing 'Yuri Approved' to 'Lily Instatement' seems totally bizarre considering the context of the show. While technically correct it doesn't feel like it fits at all. However, this is my only complaint at all with the Asenshi subbing of the show. In exchange for this minor annoyance we get proper typesetting, translation of signs, karaoke subs, etc. That's a price I'm willing to accept.
All in all, translation is just another form of adaptation. Which means its extremely tricky and there are different views on how to do it best. I agree with you anon that CR did a fine job in this first episode of Sarazanmai. I am going to go and watch the episode with Asenshi too to compare and form a better judgement for my viewing going forward. Just thought I'd share my thoughts.

They aren't exactly puns per se, they're just replacing the 人 or 者 part of constructions that use it with 熊. Like saying "Businessbear" instead of "Businessman". You're kind of fucked either way when the English term doesn't actually suggest anything to do with humans in it.

Ikuhara definitely chose the kappa motif because it can be so gay. The whole show is deliberately fabulous as fuck, probably to emphasize the ugly truth that anything so ass-centered is going to feature a lot of shit-digging. So I watched both the Asenshi and the Crunchyroll subs. They were pretty similar, but as expected Asenshi had better typesetting and incorporated the sign translations into the scenes themselves. The script was largely the same, perhaps with Asenshi sounding a bit more natural. The big stand outs were the incorporation of Sara's verbal tic into the sentences themselves and the kappa 'pun'. I am probably going to keep watching Crunchyroll just because it comes out first and I can't wait to get my Ikuhara dose.
From Asenshi site:
>What’s with Azuma Sara?
>Her verbal tic is turning the sentence ender です into でぃっしゅ (dish). You’ll be seeing and hearing this a lot. There is also scroll text beneath the chyrons on her TV show that is in English, and starts with this odd warning that “Normal people cannot see this.” If you turn off subs, you’ll notice that every single one of these is actually in romanized Japanese. So yes, normal people can’t easily read it.

I hate it when they try to incorporate 語尾 into the lines like this. It's one more restriction you impose on how you can phrase your translation and it leads you down the path of changing the script content just so you can have your stupid pun in. Doing it CR's way is much lazier, but it's also much safer. There's also the fact that 語尾 aren't actually puns at all. If they're not that clever in Japanese, why try to make them into something clever in English?
I always thought the general rule was that subs prioritize accuracy, and when you can actually hear the characters talking, it doesn't take a genius to figure out when one is speaking a bit weird. Leave it to the dubs to forego some of the accuracy for the sake of smoothness. When you bring this kind of attitude into subbing you end up distorting the script to convey things that the viewer can pick up on anyway, and for what? To show off how many puns you can come up with? It just comes across as arrogance to me. Translators need to remind themselves that they're translators first and writers second.

>Doing it CR's way is much lazier, but it's also much safer.
Putting them on the end is about the best way they can be handled.
Leaving them out of the subs isn't ideal. In this case they're heavily emphasized and unmissable, but it's entirely possible for more subtle tics to get lost for a non-Japanese speaker listening to the audio. And that aside, it's unpleasant for there to be an element of the audio that is clearly not present in the subs, so it would end up being annoying for them not to have it here.
As another argument against punning aside from those you've mentioned, there's a difference in nuance between a character with a sentence-ending tic, and one who's constantly cracking puns.

>directed the second season
No, he directed the third season, Sailor Moon S.
>He didn't like the lack of creative freedom
That's like saying Anno didn't like the lack of creative freedom when he directed Gunbuster.
Sailor Moon S was the holy grail of creative input from three famous directors, Junichi Sato, who had directed the first two seasons, Ikuhara, this being his directorial debut, and Anno, who went on to make Evangelion right after this was finished and incorporated his newfound relationship with Ikuhara into it, being overly optimistic that he can connect with a wide audience this time.
I just think it's preposterous to assume he didn't have creative freedom because he set the ground rules for the entire rest of the anime franchise after he was gone. Tuxedo Mask's presence slowly dwindled until he fucking dies out of nowhere and the whole anime became gay and stylistic instead of iyashikei and comedic.
>The absolute state of /a/.
Indeed. Time to get back to studying, kiddo.

>No, he directed the third season, Sailor Moon S.
My mistake, I was going from memory.
>Ikuhara left Toei and Sailor Moon because he didn't like the lack of creative freedom
>Somehow equivalent to Anno making Gunbuster
The big difference here is that Anno had not been working on Gunbuster for four seasons and 166 episodes. No one is saying that Ikuhara didn't put some of his vision into Sailor Moon, alongside others as you have pointed out. But at the end of the day he was still stuck making Sailor Moon, an already well established and famous property. This clearly was not enough for him, so he quits, makes his own studio and a year later produces Utena which is most definitely his own work. From how 'out there' all of his original work has been since he left Toei, I think its easy to see he had been looking for more creative control than he had had with his four years working on Sailor Moon. No need to be so snarky anon.

In the same way, Anno was directing a vision from 4 different people who all saw different things in Gunbuster and Anno had to tard wrangle the whole mess together in the end. That's what I mean. Ikuhara wrangled together input from several different sources.
Also, he co-directed Maple Story Monogatari with Junichi back in the day before Junichi handed over Sailor Moon to him.
Don't mind me, I'm just doing a little shitposting.

It's not like he did it just because he enjoyed it, he at least was just trying to make his brother happy. He was pretending (literally) to be someone else, which is a thinly veiled metaphor for being a tranny in general. It came crashing down on him this episode and I think he's at least started to learn his lesson.

Man, is Enta worst Sarazanmai?
I don't think Toi or Kazuki are gay. Kazuki is kinda awere of Enta's feelings but he just ignores him.
Now, Mabu and Reo are getting interesting. They are the gayest part of the anime, It was not nice to see Otter!Maby being used by the Otter.
This anime will have a sad ending, I know it.
I wonder how they will handle Toi, Kazuki's arc is done so we are doing Enta now.

So now that I had time to think about it, I guess it was alright. The music was amazing. I loved all the insert songs and didn't even mind all the repeated scenes because of them. My main complaint is that it wasn't gay enough. With all the "homoerotic themes" I thought it was going to be a bigger part of the plot

No.938867

Sure there was no lack of homoerotic themes. I just hoped they'd go somewhere.
Kazuki crossdressing was a huge part of the first episodes. Considering how good he was at it and how much he seemd to enjoy that "couple date" I thought there was some reveal like him doing it because he wants to and trying to bond with his little brother was just an excuse. But nope, apparently he just thought dressing up as a girl was the best possible way to cheer up his bro and the he just kinda stops. What said makes perfect sense as a message. >>926754
>Trying to be someone else wont solve your problems!
This even got reinforced by him trying to live as a Kappa the episode after he got exposed. I just thought there was more to it than that.
However Enta is, once again, the biggest problem. His homolust gets brought up so many times but it never really goes anywhere. His Sarazanmai-flashback scene reveals that he secretly kissed Kazuki, sniffed his shirts and at his used fap tissues or whatever but that's just laughed off as "Haha, I guess the other guys from the soccer club made you do it."
All the trouble doesn't arise because he's a faggot but because he's an absoloutly terrible person who uses the worst possible means to achieve his goals.
Lastly, I wish Sara had interacted with the characters a bit more. There was one episode when Toi tries to lock her up and she had two scenes with Hotwheels-chan but that was about it. I wish she had done more, considering how important her role in the story turned out to be.
I got no complains about Toi's story and the gay cops are just gay. That's alright I guess.
