I had to explain to a friend who is barely into anime what Attack on Titan was, why everyone he knows used to be super into it and why they all hate it now. This could be bullet point listed out as:
>Everyone guessed 3 chapters in it was going to be The Village and the basement had an example of centuries ahead technology in it. The writer vehemently denied this till it proved correct. Six real world years later.
>The writer reportedly having a 'everyone dies' ending in place till 2013 and changing it because his assistant had a beakdown over Sasha dying, which i guess is now a bit ironic in retrospect.
>Kept trying to reinvent his series world building as it grew increasingly evident he didn't know how to end it
>Main cast all doing personality/morality flips after a time skip and Eren Attacking and killing hundreds over on the mainland making him no better than the guys who did that to him as kids
>Changing it from a virus to a mythical pantheon of monsters and the reveal that Eren was the "Attack-On" berserker Titan all along.
I know people that keep up just out of obligation, personally i do out of morbid curiosity at how beyond Tite Kubo level absurd it gets but i dont enjoy it nearly as much as when it was "1800's alternate europe tries to survive giga zombie outbreak". Personally i would have ended it a long time ago. Just kill the last titans on the island, all seems good. Then explorers set out to the sea, find the mainland and its a ruined Tokyo circa like 2089 and titans are everywhere, all humans are dead and it ends on some comment about retreating to the safety of the island and "humanity being a bird in a cage" as a bittersweet twist that this none stop hell has actually only gone on for four of five generations and the freedom young Eren wanted as a child is now the ultimate hell just to hammer home a bleak ending the author originally wanted without just murdering everyone like an edgelord.
Not the best idea for an ending but it wouldn't still be shambling along with former fans wishing it was over. What series do you think is over the hill and should have ended a long time ago? and how would you have done it?
