I have read a bit of the manga and it sold me on the story more than this first episode did.
I don't know about the seiyuu they got for Bocchi. She sounds a bit too old, and like a diet HanaKana. I think the entire show kind of lacks energy too. Funny you should mention WataMote because that delivered Tomoko's autism like punches to the gut and her personality was what drove the entire series before she got lobotomized. I don't expect that kind of tone here obviously, but Bocchi by comparison doesn't really communicate much of a personality at all, so I can't really get invested in her autistic antics. The scene with the self-introduction for example is great in concept but delivered so flatly and boringly. It needed some kind of swell in music, maybe some shaky camera movement, more expression from Bocchi; things that makes the audience feel the kind of tension that scene is supposed to represent for our main character, and yet we have a girl throwing up from her nerves in front of the entire class and it's just glossed over. I think the music is one of the main culprits, since they pick unfitting BGM for some scenes or just have no music at all when they really should. The directing is also kind of bad. The studio seems to be pretty new, so I guess that explains some of this. It picks up now and then but most of the episode felt pretty dull and I'm still not sure if this wants to be a comedy or a SoL. 4koma adaptations rarely work well as anime so I want to cut it some slack but this definitely feels weaker than both WataMote and Mitsuboshi Colors so far. SunaKo is cuter than Bocchi.
