Oh, definitely agree with those points. It's actually one of the reasons why I like the anime more than the manga; the anime makes everybody who isn't Ranma or Akane much more sane and sympathetic than they are in the manga.

Also... dat pic; I didn't know that Ryoga-chan pics even existed! For a series with a canon gender-bending macguffing, nobody ever seems to want to apply it to Ranma's cast of rivals.

Honestly? Given how popular the Ranma/Ryoga couple has gotten in the modern era (buncha degenerates), I think making Ryoga the "Ukyo" of the series - the crossdressed girl who was both in love with Ranma and hating him, whilst Ranma was ignorant of her true gender for the longest time, would have been a way better use of him. Ukyo was nice, but she was also kind of superfluous.

Or at least give Ryoga his own Nyanniichuan curse; that way you could have done a way more interesting take on the Ranma/Kuno "relationships" where they spend a long time ignorant of each other's curse, hating the same gendered one but being attracted to the opposite gendered one.

Fun fact; did you know that Ranma 1/2 had 15 different videogames released in Japan in the early 1990s? Or that Ranma-chan and Lum will be released as player characters in Capcom's Schoolgirl Strikers 2?

Rumiko is one of the rare industry geniuses, like Anno with direction or Miyazaki with animation, in that she can make anything an instant hit. But like all industry geniuses, she has her quirks.

Personally, I loved the series, but I would have made somebody else be the official love interest. Akane's not a bad person, but Ranma brings out the worst in her, and she's the least interesting love interest in canon.

That anon's idea of folding Ryoga and Ukyo together into one reverse trap rival sounds more and more interesting the more I think about it.

Loved Ranma back then, nowadays the twitter trannies would cause an uproar over it. It's weird how nobody ever remade Lum and Ranma, I thought they were extremely popular too.

Ryoga and Shampoo stories were my favorite. I wouldn't mind exploring their origins a bit longer, like Ryoga before turning pig and Shampoo before realizing Ranma transforms.

While it'd be great to see some new Ranma/UY, everyone already knows the characters enough to keep selling merchandise and manga tankoubon so an anime wouldn't really happen. The status quo ending was what grinds my gears about Rumiko. Back during the scanlations of inuyasha, even the scanlators were complaining about her. They'd make comparisons of how her art suffered like how it was less gorey than it was in the current chapters at the time. Forgot the name of the site, but even a fan site had a article that highlighted her quality issues. Something along the lines of she'd rather make a long series just for the sake of it. This was in reference to Inuyasha at the time.

I wouldn't mind a revival of her old works in modern animation, so long as it doesn't take ques from Kyoukai no Rinne animation or the pitfall of her female mangaka contemporary that was Sailor Moon Crystal. The Ranma anime did take some liberties from what I remember so a revival closer to the source material would work and I think people would want it.

Happosai was something to be used more sparsely. As it was, it became dirty old man central and the show lost its initial balance with Ranma and Akane at the center of the world. Notice how most of the late series addictions don't really influence Akane and the Tendos at all, but always weight on Ranma alone making the narrative lopsided.

Entire manga series have been developed over details just handwave for comedy in Ranma. If anything, a reimagined series should go slower and enjoy telling their story without rushing to the next fight.

Previous Takahashi works were earthbreaking and huge media monsters, from Lum to Ranma to Inuyasha. Rinne just enjoyed a long agony without ever sparking real interest, probably kept being published only because of rumiko's name on the cover.

Still, it wasn't a failure. Failure manga gets canceled after a couple of week, never gets an anime and isn't known to anyone. Rinne is less popular than some other manga, but still, it's a moderately successfully work.

Complete relaunch of the series; basically the original Ranma 1/2 anime with superior animation and actually going all the way to the manga's canonical ending.

As above, but build from the original anime's divergences. Make the love interests and rivals deeper than just generic obstacles for Ranma & Akane's love, make Ranma & Akane actually develop a working bond with each other, and have them finally end the series with them getting married instead of hammering the reset button like Takahashi did in canon.

>Crazy Fanfic Version

Go full-on ultimate universe and rework the series to keep the basic idea - Ranma, a martial artist who reluctantly turns into a girl has to juggle a complex lifestyle of crazy martial arts challenges and way too many love interests - but do different things with each other.

Merge Ryoga and Ukyo together into one tsundere/in-denial reverse trap waifu who is also Ranma's dedicated rival, and even after she admits she loves him still makes their dating life practically a challenge in and of itself.

Make Kuno a legitimately skilled rival who grows in talent to threaten Ranma like Ryoga did in canon - and have him bring in crazy magical threats and monsters as a way to try and even up the odds.

Make Shampoo a legitimate female martial artist and give her a legitimate shot at Ranma's heart.

Have more Chinese Amazons follow Shampoo from China and set up shop in Nerima as a source of plot hooks and background comedy.

Make Nabiki and Kasumi deeper than the shallow puddles they are in canon. Maybe one or both of them actually starts nursing a crush on Ranma but is unwilling to step forth into the ring.

Make the choice of who Ranma will hook up with less obvious from the start. I'd personally have Ranma hook up with anyone who isn't Akane, but I'd settle for just making her less of an inferior choice to the other girls and making things be less blatantly weighted in her favor.

Let Ranma get a happy ending. Let him pick one (or more) girls to marry, find a cure, or at least start on a treatment regime that'll ultimately fix his gender bending problem. Just something better than just ending everything with a cocktease!

What would you call Ryoga-chan if she was canon? My kneejerk thought is "Yoiko" (in part because of that name's appearance in canon), but maybe Ryoga works for a born-female Ryoga under similar logic to Ryuunosuke, the reluctant reverse trap of Urusei Yatsura who inspired Ranma and Ukyo?

Originally, I was mostly interested in Shampoo because, having first entered the fandom with the Pantyhose Taro manga arc, I was interested in how people could make her redeem herself. But as I watched the anime and saw her redeeming qualities - saw her genuine devotion to Ranma, her bubbly personality, her fighting skills - and I came to genuinely support her as a romantic option for Ranma. Add in the appeal of the exotic, busty, blue-haired Chinese girl, and... yeah, she's my #1 Ranma girl.

She's loyal, passionate, more open to her feelings than Akane, driven towards her goals... plus, she's not only a reverse trap, she's legitimately hot under the boyish garb. Add in that she proves she doesn't care about Ranma's trappings but him by accepting his curse and being willing to stand by him when he lost his strength, and yes, I think they'd be good together.

I admit, this one requires more development than canon gives her, but I think that her intelligence, her desire for entertainment, her cunning... they could have been good for each other.

Ryoko is technically hotter than Ranko, but Ryoga rejects femininity so won't flirt at all (unlike teasing Ranko) with the result of looking like a homely tomboy. This creates a dynamic where Ranko and Ryoko get unintended results from their interactions, since typically Ranko will deal with others through pure strentgh and sex appeal, but Ryoko will be the one winning them over in the end due to her approachability and lack of gender tension.

When Ryoga is told that Ryoko is the most popular one, he neither spazzes out or go full gay: he simply laments his bad luck and soldiers on, accepting both lives.
