I can never keep up with this damn show. Always new characters and factions being introduced who are supposedly very important and they have pre-existing relationships with other characters and then they all have to accomplish some goal that wasn't adequately explained and wouldn't make sense even if it was. The only character who ever manages to make any sense in terms of characterisation, motivation, abilities and even simple dialogue is Accelerator and even he occasionally gets infected with the nonsensical-ness of other characters.

It's like some kind of stress nightmare.

What show? Index is a light novel with manga spinoffs that by some miracle Kamachi is still writing. No one would dare animate a series with a giant web of characters and motivations.

I haven't read the little novel, and having only seen most of the anime of both Index and Railgun, this latest season felt like it was suppose to be this big culmination of something epic but I feel like I'm missing out on a lot of key points and details. From what I hear, the third season crams tons of the light novels into all the episodes and it does show. I feel like it's suppose to be important but it does more to explain why it's important instead of showing it through the animation and organic dialogue. I also feel like it skips a lot of scenes that may not be necessary but would give better context and pace the show better. Season III feels like the worse jumping on to point if you haven't caught up with the series, but even then, not having read the light novels, it feels rushed and overly convoluted that I could tell it was a poor adaptation by the pace it was going at.

You cannot avoid it. Touma canonically lusts after Index's body.

“Oh, it’s Touma!” As she raised her voice in excitement, Index’s small body was contained in a white one piece swimsuit.....For some reason, Index puffed her chest out proudly while seated. When Kamijou saw the beads of sweat on her neck dripping into her swimsuit, it filled him with a somewhat sinful feeling.

Can someone help me understand some contrive aspects of the series? Stuff as Mikoto`s thousands of clones roaming around and herself somehow accepting that without having an existential crisis. The fact that they pretty much live on an independent city-state and its citizens are constantly being monitored and are expected to give themselves away for military research if they manifest useful psychic traits. Or maybe why the leaders of Academic City allow Touma freedom when he has hands down the most powerful property a person can manifest or why Index is allowed to exist outside a heavily guarded vault held by the church when she is pretty much the biggest source of knowledge for magical users in the whole world.

The children in Academy City were for the most part raised there for their whole lives, so the contrivances of Academy City are cultural norms for them. Living in a technologically advanced society a few decades ahead of the rest of the world is just an everyday accepted fact by everyone there, which would apply to the additional surveillance and stuff like clones. You have to remember that they aren't just living there freely, there is an agreement that in exchange for living there, the children are legally owned as test subjects for Academy City.

> From what I hear, the third season crams tons of the light novels into all the episodes and it does show.

It's good, and SIV is just around the corner the fact that if you think about it the VAs get older or leave the scene we'll be left with awkward VA replacements or even no more continuation.

It sure crammed a lot of stories but it was executed very nicely in my opinion and each and every episode is exponentially better than previous ones - to the point it did not become "that boring S3" like on overlord.

LNs have much more depth due to longer+more interesting characterization in text that won't look awkward even if it's several chapters of characterization = better. At least we can have the best of both worlds.

The final episode got released and I can't critique any part of it except maybe the quality of the first few episodes but that was probably the tight schedule and will surely change in the BD release.

I've been waiting for the SIII for quite a while and railgun is just boring.

She did before when she knew about the project but the fact that her 'sisters' were made due to accelerator's level 6 project it means that the creation and current existence of the sisters is due to accelerator.

>The fact that they pretty much live on an independent city-state and its citizens are constantly being monitored and are expected to give themselves away for military research if they manifest useful psychic traits.

But aren't the espers also well-guarded in the Academic City against any government interest? Think of it as an independent state that protects all espers and even develops them - they'd be guinea pigs and weaponized by their home country if you think about it. But then most of the ones they use for dirty work are the ones who had been doing underground work.

Citizens are monitored so Aleisters' plan don't get out of hand.

>Or maybe why the leaders of Academic City allow Touma freedom when he has hands down the most powerful property a person can manifest or why Index is allowed to exist outside a heavily guarded vault held by the church when she is pretty much the biggest source of knowledge for magical users in the whole world.

It's a win-win for the Necessarius keep in mind that Tsuchimikado also checks on Index and Touma and Index are inseparable due to his promise (plot of memory loss) and because he's the one who saved Index (that maybe even Aleister tried or whatever) and Touma can negate her magic if shit happens.

Also, Aleister is only interested in the Level 6 not on Touma and he's probably much stronger than Index's entire grimoires. Touma intervened with the Level 6 project of accelerator but Aleister just put him at the center of the plan (he also probably respects imagine breaker or wants to know more about it).

I can only laugh. For that matter I also thought Accel would be a part of it but all he actually did was somehow get knocked out and captured. All Hamazura did was manage to not die, which is okay I guess but again it wouldn't have made any difference had he camped in a cave and stroked his dick. None of those characters needed to be there, they didn't matter to the overarching story. In Hamazura's case he should have died, but didn't despite his circumstances. Plot armor? Shiage Luck? Accelerator's part was saving the world. Fiamma was about to soak the world in Telesma, but Accelerator Vector'd it all away with his magic. The ending of WWIII only brought up more questions, such as what happened to Touma, what is going on with Aleister, and who is Othinus? Do you have any idea how much anime I could watch in that time? Not to mention I'm sadly not a NEET anymore and couldn't actually devote all that much time to it anymore, so I'd probably be looking at a good 6 months before I got through it all, and we're talking about dully written books that barely managed to hold my attention as-is. Within the past month I started the series.

Railgun S1 = fun in academy city

Railgun S2 = fun then macabre "You've been cloned 20,000 times, watch them die to a sadistic monster as we try to push him to godhood". Then Touma saved the day, and is never seen again for the rest of the season, even though he's a love interest.

Index S1 = In same universe as Railgun, but every few episodes is a new arc, always adding new characters. The season doesn't seem to build up to a huge climax, season finale just feels like another arc.

Index S2 = even more mini arcs, this time traveling all around the world, adding more characters, and this kind of cheapens each arc because they just become forgotten as soon as the next arc occurs. Season finale feels like a proper climax, city gets WRECKED.

Index S3 = all over the place as the characters travel around the globe, quality and writing is much less sharp. Even though you finally see the heads of English & Roman churches get overpowered, the season has less impact.

A big turn off is that you get introduced to all these characters, but later on don't see where they go because they get ignored in the next arc, and the arc after that as well. It's one of the reasons why the school festival arc was fun, you finally see all the return of these beloved characters you used to see all the time.

Another problem is that sometimes there are characters that are built up to be incredibly strong, but turn around and they get destroyed in fights. That Kanzaki is one of only 20 saints in the world that are supposed to be insanely strong, but every time she shows up in S2 & S3 she loses in just a few hits. Accelerator was godlike in combat, but in S2 he gets destroyed against somebody's who's pretty normal. Worst of all is Index who's got the most insane eldrich knowledge of any person in the world...but doesn't use any of it with the exception of 3 times in as many seasons.

First seasons were the sharpest. Series got progressively dumbed down until Index Season 3, despite bigger players introduced, the series began to also rely on gags that also cheapened the series. Didn't start out as a harem anime, maybe love triangle, but as time went on it was like every female character was in love with Touma. Index would bite Touma as a gag joke if she hadn't eaten in 5 minutes.

Here is a list of things you did wrong

1. Watching Railgun first (its a spinoff of Index)

2. Watching Index before reading its LN source material

3. Not reading Index at all

4. Not reading Railgun (manga source material) at all

5. Complain about problems in the Index anime (especially season 3) that were solely caused by JCStaff

I will give you a free pass on power level creep though. That much is expected in any long running story with power levels. Kamachi has somewhat realized this issue with Kanzaki and purposefully written the other saints and characters around such a setup. Kanzaki is one of the weaker saints in the grand scheme but when she first appeared Kamachi wrote her as borderline untouchable. That happens to all of new power level classes.

If youre going to pick up Raildex you have to start with the Index LNs. Starting with the spinoffs will only bring confusion. The Index anime are advertisements or highlight reels that at times omit key details and plot points that become critical in a later volume. Some of the blame lies on Kamachi's early writing floundering around as somewhat stand alone volumes. The sisters arc was the first arc that really fit the pieces together into what Kamachi can do. Building upon the fallout of that arc, the overall Index story doesn't really come into focus until Vento/Fuse=Kazakiri.
