I started reading it and for instance, the father actively accepted to trade his son for what he admitted to be "his power over the land" (nothing about "helping the people") while in this version, Daigo merely accepted the results because it was too late to consider it since they took what they wanted without warning.

Does this show get better after the first episode? Because it feels like total trash. Daigo is an interesting character, but apparently he's much more evil in the manga which means the anime will likely kill him off in the end and set him up to be the antagonist throughout. The mother was insufferable, fuck that bitch. Annoyed how the bog monster literally bee-lined to kill all the problematic honest workers who didn't like to be cheated, stolen from, and blinded but ignored the kid that was much closer and easier to grab. Then prosthetic-boy only starts acting virtuous and trying to save people when only the kid is left, ok. What a weird mix. Both the animation and the structure had some absolute shit parts and others that were good.
They spend way too much time on the build-up and then even re-telling some parts of said build-up and almost none on the actual moth monsters. We only saw her once as human last episode. In the manga we see her and her daughters (of which she has far more than 2) multiple times as humans. It might have even helped with the "grey morality" theme from this episode if we saw him slice up some cute girls. The conflict with Sabame was also over far too quick and solved too clean. How did the village even burn down?
Regarding the leg, him loosing his prosthetic and replacing it should have gotten some more focus. I did like that he finally used some form of leg-cannon though. Also, him regaining his spine was a nice twist. He regains his leg in the manga so I assumed they'd go for that since that would also lazily solve his new problem. I'm glad I was wrong in that regard.

>What if Daigo's land is just inherently shit and the demons are the ones making it prosperous?
This is the implication I got. The dying of Daigo's land was natural. He sought supernatural help, defying the natural order. This is a pretty common villain trope in Eastern stories. Here too but more common over there.

They really did try to show it as an ambiguity. They basically resolved it with Hyakkimaru's moms bullshit about "built off the sacrifice of one is fragile" but they still aren't willing to say outright that sacrificing your son to demons is wrong.

And fuck those peasants. Fuck everyone in the Daigo land. Every single one of them should be dead.
>>933778
Not only that, but they awakened demons who roam the land constantly killing. Sacrificing one for the prosperity of one land? don't make me laugh. They damned anyone that wasn't Daigo, and just for that complicity the whole land should be purged for the good of all Japan.
Fuck that bitch mother. I hope she gets stabbed.
This episode made me incredibly mad.
No.934211
>>934191
I mean by their very same logic of "one single sacrifice to save the Daigo land" you can say "one single province to save Japan" because not only are they trying so hard to paint Hyakkimaru as this dual good/bad kinda person that's on the brink of going Oni. Of fucking course he is mad, who wouldn't? He just wants his body parts and his loli, Daigo might very well had brought prosperity but confiding with demons NEVER goes well for a fucking reason.
No.934365
>>934211
Exactly, they try hard to make it some sort of moral grey zone when everything is perfectly black and white. All Daigo soldiers and peasants are evil and deserve the fire. They unleashed demons over the land and then they expect others to have pity on them when they suffer.
No.934376

Not to mention the opening makes him outright say "I won't pray to Buddha. Demon pact, bitches!". Good consequences for his people only go so far, Daigo himself is definitely a piece of shit.
No.934403
>>934376
Not to detract anything from Daigo being literally evil, but I thought that he was praying to Buddha and whatever other not-evil gods there were, and his land was still plagued by drought and famine and disease, and that's exactly why he decided to start worshiping demons.
No.934428

The man had over a decade to start getting his shit in order too, working on infrastructure, canals for fields that sort of thing to futureproof his land against things going pear shape (because fucking demon pact) and just sat about being a grim-faced ass resting on his laurels. Makes me wonder too about the peasantry, if all the prosperity led to them getting sloppy about tending the land.

I agree. Kinda left a sour taste in my mouth. Its implied that Hyakkimama, Tahomaru, and the prosthetic maker all decided to die for their sins, but really the only one that needed to/should have was the prosthetic maker. It would have been much more fitting for him to die while saving the rest of them. This ending, while taking a few episodes, still felt rushed. It was a great ride and I enjoyed it, despite the shit about Hyakkimama, Tahomaru, and the prosthetic maker dying for no reason and the last demon being introduced and killed in 30 seconds. The animation was good this episode, for the fights. All in all, a good show.

I'm enjoying it. It is as bleak as hell. The yellowish green cast to the black and white animation that's present in the files I have is something I assume is just an artifact of the digitising process but I think it suits the setting very well. It reminds me of Gattaca.
