It hurt seeing the reused animation for the FWs and most of the attacks when everyone assembled were static sliding Precure kicks. It didn't seem like they could get most of the VAs back together for recording. Doesn't this spoil the movie and Hugtto's story in a really bad way? This was supposed to be a battle the Hugttos win on their own to show their own strength and let the movie handle the bulk of the anniversary stuff. Somehow the Dr. Traum story which came out of nowhere, has been put to bed and aside from one bad guy and the hamsterfag theres no threat to anyone in the Hugtto story. Next week is a Halloween special which seems to confirm that with about 1 cour of episodes left, its going to be some episodic filler until a limp wristed final 2 or 3 episodes where Hugtan gets big and and wins.

Since I'm still watching MH, I noticed something wildly different between MH (and other Precures) and Hugtto that might be part of the reason Hugtto is trash. MH has more relate-able events and characters than Hugtto. Often we start episodes with Nagisa's internal monologue which really add depth to her character as it shows shes really thinking of past events and what to do going forward. Both Honoka and Nagisa spend a lot of time in school doing typical JC things and for the most part their worries are based around that like sports, grades, friends, favorite foods, romance, and clubs. The monster of the week almost always follows up with whatever the event of interest is that week. All of the later Precures I've seen maintain that same or a very similar setup.
Hugtto on the other hand, does the opposite. I think we have seen one non-cure classmates of Hana. We have no idea if the school has any teachers or principle, I don't think any of the cures have non-cure friends barring Emiru-Kotori. Pretty much every week with Hugtto the story has been "once upon a time the cures were doing X as a group and suddenly the bad guys attacked". Homare is supposed to be an amazing figure skater but theres no kouhai to look up to her, shes not even on the school figure skating team if it even exists. Saaya is supposed to a wonderful actress but shes not part of the acting club. Hana is entirely useless aside from furefure but shes nothing like pink from Anima Yell. Emiru could be in a music club but shes not. Ruru is supposed to go to school now, but after that one scene at school shes never been seen there again. None of the Hugttos seem like JS/Cs. They all feel like talking dolls that do as the director and writer say.

I was noticing that too. There is too little regular life in Hugtto, and as a result the characters feel very alienated and unrelatable. The Ruru arc was great in part because it had her trying to blend in with everyday school and family stuff. It's a simple thing but if they'd just put in one school scene per show I would probably end up liking it twice as much. I mean, while FW and MH dragged, the normal JC content in them made them comfy shows. I enjoyed every lacrosse episode.
I also realized while watching Anima Yell that wait, Hana isn't even a real cheerleader is she? She wears the outfit in the intro, and it's her Cure motif, and she goes furefure at people, but I can't remember one single scene of her actually doing it.

Even though chair would be a perfect outlet for her natural chair energy and let her see professionals doing various jobs without getting in the way, that kind of characterization is non-existent so she furefures as a default response to any unknown challenge. I'm fully expecting the story to end with "I dont know what I want to do but I have lots of time to figure it out. Furefure watashi~" or be forgotten entirely.

Thinking about it, Hana's problem is not having anything she wants to do with her life and filling the void with furefure minna. When furefure failed, she felt useless. Then she realized that supporting people IS valuable and she had only been doing it wrong. Now she no longer feels useless, but she never dealt with her real problem. And that's why her character arc feels so shitty. She's even been exposed to all these jobs and things but never reflected on them except to say that everything is fun and amazing. The only thing that made me feel any growth from her character was when it turned out that she had been working at the takoyaki stand on her own volition.

I liked the crossover episodes. I couldn't help but feel nostalgic about a bunch of stuff. Seeing all those super fucking obvious inter-series team-ups and fanservice that for some reason NEVER happen in the actual movies felt really really good. It finally paid off to be a Precure oldfag. I'm guessing they decided to do this, and also have the movie with all the cures actually having a voice role, because Heisei is ending so they wanted to end the era with a bang. I really hope that with the new era they also decide to give Precure a very much needed series make-over, the current formula is not working anymore.
That said, I have no idea how Hug's season finale will be able to top it. Maybe a more low scale personal thing between Hana and George. That'd be nice.

That 3rd picture is a toy sales dream come true. Overall this episode is a tiny uptick in the usual Hugtto nonsense. The fight scene seemed to be well animated but again way too short. I think the Cheerful transformation and attack took longer than the one sided "exchange" of blows. Was there any point to a turncoat becoming a double crosser for one week just so a monster appeared? Next week it seems we finally get the Hugtan and Harry backstory and it will all be thrown at us then resolved in one or at most two episodes.

I'm not fully caught up yet, so forgive me for speaking so soon, but Hana doesn't really bother me. She's a character that is exceedingly normal surrounded by extraordinary friends. She's plain and bland and that's where her character is. You see throughout the show that she's depressed about this, starting with the hair cut in episode 1 where she wants to change herself. This is why she fure fure watashis.
I might be completely wrong about this because I'm not caught up yet, but I have a feeling Junichi is going to ramp up this depression again soon.
What writing, design, and direction choices do you not like?
The writing seems fine so far, with enough mystery to keep you wanting more. It's well written for a Precure series so far.
The design I do have a problem with. The upgrade outfit for the memory explosion wasn't anything special, just tacked on white sheets on the normal outfits. It's like failed attempts at Innocent Form from HaCha. The memory explosion isn't very interesting either, and I didn't ever quite like the tact stuff for that matter anyway. Homare's design reminds me of Shoujo art, whereas everyone else is normally designed. The cures look fine to me in general other than that, though.
I can't see any bad direction, other than the faggotry. Every scene that is supposed to hit, hits hard. The way in which, for example, >>880456 this scene suddenly shows up after the fall is top direction. How the Little Mermaid world looked was nice. The way Lulu fell over and Hana shuddered when they all thought Lulu would die way back when was amazing. Even if you just generally don't like certain choices, like Hana throwing away the sword and such, you can't really fault the storyboarding and direction. It's usually great stuff. Even the way the Memory beam was introduced was great, even if it was stupid that they got the upgrade power out of nowhere and it was never shown that they needed an upgrade power in the first place (Actually, now that I think about it, this last is the fault of the direction).
The direction is usually top tier, if unorthodox. It's probably just unorthodox in the first place because this is a veteran director who does things differently than people nowadays.
Again, I might be talking out my ass because I'm not all the way caught up, but this is how I see it right now.

The group doesn't feel like they're friends. I mean, they do sometimes and in some ways. But again it's like there's something missing that's hard to describe. I can still vouch for the fact that what it does do it does well. It really doesn't do fights, school life, or realistic situations, and honestly I don't really look for these anymore in modern Precure. True to life concerns about school and boys don't happen in Precure anymore, not since HaCha, anyway. I don't know much Precure before that.
In any case, what it does is masterful directing of various character stories. I think that because Toei got angry letters about too much fighting, they had to make a team that could spice up the show with character-driven narratives alone, so we get damn fun episodes and great scenes from a master director. I will defend the directing in this show to the grave. Some things are damn amazing, and the writing isn't half bad either. I think that it's just really easy to hate on it right now like it was really easy to hate on HaCha back when that aired, but now is seen as relatively enjoyable. (I keep comparing these two because these are the unorthodox seasons in recent memory.) I think that in time people will be able to look back on this Precure fondly. It's way above average as far as Precure goes to say the least.
Just saw this one and it's still really good. I'm really waiting for it to get bad and prove me wrong.
I want a full anime just about a Precure fanclub. So many great ideas all throughout Precure that never gets to shine more than one episode.

We have never had an episode or even half-episode where we focused on the relationships between the cures. A Hana-Homare friendship building episode where Hana learns to ice skate and Homare learns to chair (if Hana was a chairleader), or a Saaya-Emiru scene where they go to Akiba to buy kaijuu and ultraman figures then have autistic fights with them. These kind of episodes would really support your point on character-driven narratives as a Emiru-Kotori episode could be used as a catalyst to advance the plot with Emiru and her brother not accepting music in contrast to Kotori and Hana. Obviously themes of sibling bonds present here. We don't have any of that though. I don't think Homare has ever spoken to Emiru.

This was a good episode. I wish it spanned multiple episodes given the importance of Ruru, Harry, and Hugtan leaving the group. There was enough story crammed in here with Emiru's grandfather, sudden change in behavior, the climax for Emiru, battle, and resolution that it could easily fill that much time and really make an impact. Next week Henri becomes a bad guy and it seems like another power up is coming.

That's a big problem with Hugtto. What little development it gets goes at breakneck speed, then a bunch of nothing happens and then sudden development. You'd think that with the writing they could've expanded on all of those aspects (Ruru, babby and hamster having to go back, Emiru's relationship with her family) instead of just shoving them in your face for one episode. Emiru and Ruru's friendship does have meaning because it did have proper time dedicated to it unlike pretty much everything else in the show.
It isn't the only SHT show that suffers from that, Build for example. The biggest example is Utsumi being a robot literally out of nowhere because of a joke, for no reason.

That was the most surreal Precure episode ever. Everything was fine and at times I thought "this would be a great arc climax with more build up". Then they made I think the first male Cure ever. The rest of the episode I was speechless. This has been talked about possibly happening weeks ago when Henri first appeared as a recurring face. They start with a bit of talent, find out they're far from the best, but don't throw a shit fit about it- instead, they become the best by diligently working at it. AiFure is focusing a little more on failing and picking yourself up after failing than Aikatsu did, but in a good way.

It's still good, but there were some shitty episodes in the mix, such as the first crossover episode and the recent fag episode.
It's still not a good action series, but I don't care about that because the last action-focused precure was HaCha so I didn't expect any good action. Plus, Junichi never really did action in his past.
The direction is still superb, but admittedly, the relationships are still stagnant save for Lulu and Emiru. They should have cut every cure except for these two, but I'm still liking what they're doing with everyone individually.
I really like the latest finisher. All throughout the series, this depiction of a Goddess gave me some chills, and seeing her materialize was like it was out of Eva. It was good stuff, and I like the new Innocent forms.
