Nothing. I'd rather not have an OP and ED every week to get an additional 3 minutes of content per episode. Playing the OP and ED 2 or 3 times per cour is enough.

It's hard to say OP. It's sort of like asking what boxes need to be ticked to make a good song. It has to be memorable and fit the vibe of the show. I think the best OP's are the one's that grow on you over the course of the show's broadcast.

I would say that originality is important because I feel that many OP's are very similar or uninspired but it's unusual for me to think that an OP or ED is entirely bad and if it's not good I'll just skip them anyway.

Exactly.

A good OP has a song that I never skip. A great OP keeps me watching through it instead of tabbing out to shit post. The best of the best have me listening to the OP on repeat, even years later. I know I didn't answer the question.

I just want a good song that fits the mood of the series. For example, Index S1 and S2, the OP1 for each of them were fucking fantastic, they gave off a dystopian future vibe which perfectly matched the setting of academy city.

Good music, simple as that.

Even if the anime is dark a good OP can be super cheerful and absolutely not match the tone of the anime itself like Death Parade, on the other hand you can have an aggressive angry OP that doesn't match the actual anime like Watamote.

Funny thing is, Smile Bomb (to cite but one example) has nothing to do with what happens in Yu Yu Hakusho. Still, two out of three ain't bad.

First point is especially important. I was interested in Gangsta only because of the OP, which suggested an over the top, fast paced crime action show. Meanwhile, show turned out to be slow with barely any action. On the other hand you have shows like OPM and Re: Cutie Honey, and the OP fits them like a glove.

It's been talked about when the show aired but the MiA ending comes pretty close.

Originality, better animation than the show and music that fits with the genre it represents. It's iconic that you'd want to watch the opening and ending of an episode and not want to skip it. Fairy Tail has always had terrible opening songs. That mopey opening for the recent Attack on Titans was terrible but the ending was good, even if the source material has always been terrible, the opening and endings were the usual highlights.

This is just my opinion but I really hated when the band Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas got popular and did openings for a lot of anime because their music has always been a clatter of noise that combines 3 songs together that should be separated and translated lyrics really didn't fit with the show. I remember they had an opening from a previous Sengoku Basara anime and the lyrics seems to be talking about high school girls. The only time I've heard them this year was in the ending to the high school themed spin-off to Sengoku Basara so I'm guessing their popularity is waning.

Show the characters. Good music. Creative animation.

I don't think the opening needs to show anything about the show. It literally just has to have something relating to the anime and be entertaining.

Ex: The first Bleach opening had pretty much NOTHING to do with the show and is to this day one of my favorite openings ever. They didn't use really high budget animation for the characters or anything like that. it's mostly static images with creative presentation.

Mili - Rightfully / Goblin Slayer OP/Opening [Full]

The Working!! OPs were always my favorite. I think it has to do with all of them having very simple but fun visuals that display each character's personality. I never want to skip them.

I also found it nice that for the OPs, the female VAs have the singing role while in EDs its the male VAs who sing. You dont see that too often and its cool seeing the differences in their themes.
