I still have faith in Trigger, but this really was disappointing. First thing I disliked is the generic character designs. Franxxx was the same, but I thought it was because of A-1's influence. Just what the fuck happened? LWA looked nice and even though I didn't like it a lot Kiznaiver also looked nice at least.
Also this director is the same guy from Luluco and Ninja Slayer. The guy who is supposedly Imaishi's pupil or something? Underwhelming.
What I liked was the monster design and the fight itself. Despite being mostly CGI I liked the choreography.

So now we have a super kaiju boy who can talk and think and is set to be a returning character and rival of Gridman. I assume he's going to befriend Rikka more, and maybe develop some humanity and eventually become more of a person and start questioning his actions. Also, apparently there is a limit to how long he can maintain his kaijuu form. It makes me wonder if he's really as pure a kaijuu as the other are. But what is up with Akane, I get the impression she is supposed to come off as a crazed incel nerd who hates society, but the way she gets along with kids in class it doesn't seem like she's some kind of social outcast. So I assume there's some kind of deeper sob story being this all.
The action was cool this time, it was nice to have two fights, and if the combat is in CGI, at least the gattai sequence was actually drawn. I do wonder why Gridman didn't die, and where he and Yuuta went when they vanished. Maybe every time he is beaten more of those unmoving kaijuu statues appear and so while he can always regenerate from a wound once there are too many kaijuu they will awaken and destroy everything, in which case it would be bad of him to lose too much. But now that all of Gridman's support buddies are here I'm waiting to see what sort of support weapons all his friends morph into. Also I wonder about Alexis, what his true goal in all of this is.

I feel pretty iffy about it so far. If the city gets destroyed, the people die and are forgotten, and life goes on with everyone's memories altered, then the main characters are going to be all alone in a huge empty city in about 2-3 fights. Every time I see a bunch of buildings get crushed during a cool action scene, I think about the thousands of people who are dying and being forgotten. This takes the Cool out of the action scenes, and makes them horrifying instead. In the fights against Kaijunior, I watched them tear through a dozen or so buildings full of people and then obliterate several city blocks in the beam clash. If subsequent fights are going to escalate from here, then there won't be any point in stopping the monsters pretty soon.
Everything else seems fine so far, but deliberately going out of their way to establish that human lives are the only thing that doesn't get reset makes me nervous that the show will devolve into misery-wanking and main characters suffering guilt/depression mindbreak.

So much shits gets introduced really quickly and alot of stuff happens, yet the three main charterers reactions to whats going on around them feels either really delayed or practically minimal to how you expect them to act. It feels like the show is throwing a whole bunch of shit at the wall but all of it lacks impact and substance and makes this whole show feel hollow, despite having some interesting ideas/elements for a show.
One thing that really bothers me is the main charterers worry about all the people in the city dying and shit during the attacks. The show tries to make that a point, yet its hard to care for a city of people who are not seen and it looks more like the monster is attacking empty buildings. A lot of people associate Trigger more with Franxx because of the hype around the studio and the title, as well as it (technically) being a robot anime. Also in retrospect it followed the same sort of path of falling off the rails in the latter part that a lot of people see as a problem with Trigger's works. So I see why people associate it primarily with them, and want to blame its flaws on them.
>Still, I do agree that current Trigger is trash.
Of their series Luluco, Ninja Slayer, and LWA are the only ones I thought delivered on what they started. Some people didn't like the LWA TV series from the beginning, others thought it went south in the second half like how I feel about KLK, but I actually liked the second half as much, or more so, than the first. Kiznaiver I blame entirely on Okada Mari, she sometimes writes a good scenario for an anime but mostly it's flubs. That Ino Battle one was just a cash-in adaptation done for the filthy money they need to keep their studio alive. Overall I am quite happy with their output as a studio, and Gridman continues that. Still I feel they have a lot more untapped potential, and hopefully one day will live up to the high hopes we all have (or had) for them.

I really do think they thought they were going to get four cours for this, and when they found out they weren't, decided to stick with the same plot instead of changing it to fit in the episodes allotted. There were some good parts in the series, but the whole story already felt too cumbersome and mismanaged, there was lots of stupidly unaccountable stuff that happened, then they added Klax-hime, lost civilizations, not-SEELE are suddenly aliens, alien armada, we're going into space. It ended up as a trainwreck, which was sad, as the show did have a lot of potential, and managed to capitalize on some of it. I think the "mission" is to save Akane. Not the city, since it's easy enough to rebuild. And the people are all, or at least Rikka is, made by her. I loved that scene with him dodging the missiles by jumping from building to building, even if it was CGI. That scene being so well done in CGI makes me wonder if they will even remake any scenes with hand drawn animation for the BD. I suppose some of them, but not the ones that look decent with CGI already.
The first form of the kaiju looked terrible in CGI though, his skin was basically just two solid colors. And this wasn't a problem for this monster only. But maybe it would be too much work making a texture? I don't really know.

>That scene being so well done in CGI makes me wonder if they will even remake any scenes with hand drawn animation for the BD.
Big doubt, it would be cool and they would already have the CGI frames as a reference for how to draw it out by hand, but I don't think this sort of thing is done, as awesome as it would be. At least the gattai sequences are hand drawn, and that is what is most important to me.

I'm still going through the original right now. But it seems like the ultimate goal of the villain in the original was a digital construct trying to escape into the real world. If I had to guess, in this new series he's trapped in the digital world as long as Gridman is alive which is why he wanted Akane to keep making kaiju until one can defeat Gridman.
This series should have been 24 episodes. There simply isn't enough time to explain everything they want to. Watching through the original Gridman is a worthwhile experience if you're liking this anime. So the Loli kaiju's name is Anosillus the 2nd. Making her the descendant of 1st pic. Anosillus was a kaiju that lived in a digital piano and was a good kaiju. Which is interesting because Akane asks in one episode if Kaiju are born just to be defeated by someone. But Gridman saves Anosillus in that episode of the original, proving that no, they aren't. It provides a lot of context and you get to see how much of this new anime is a reference to the original show. The "custodial" kaiju are actually just Venora from the original who spews poison smoke like in the original. Anti's kaiju form is clearly based on Shinobilar. In short, Akane's a creatively bankrupt hack fraud plagiarist.
This show is such a deep homage to the original that it borders on insane. You get a lot more out of it if you watch the original to a point where it feels almost like a pre-requisite in retrospect. Like this show is designed to make you want to watch the original and then come back.

No.889940
>hand drawn animation in the last fight
I knew Trigger could do it. It was a fairly awesome battle except for that part with the spinning CGI city where Alexis was spamming beams at Gridman. The fixer beam and the whole world being restored was a nice twist. But then were they really on Earth all along, and Alexis had just digitized the world? Or were they still in a computer world? The ending with 3DPD Akane suggests the latter. Although I have some qualms about the show, all in all it was quite good, better than I expected it to be from the outset. Would watch a season two.
No.890046

I heard that the reason why this show was so heavily CG was because this is actually Trigger's B-team and the big dogs are busy working on Promare. But at least the final battle was 90% hand drawn. It's the computer world, they just restored it. Alexis had cut off a small chunk from the rest of it because in Akane's own words "A big world is too much for me."

The 12 episode restriction kept the show from being amazing. They have this point at the end about how Gridman chose Yuta because while everyone loved Akane, Yuta loved Rikka. Which, I guess is supposed to mean that in a world where everyone loves Akane that Yuta is the only one capable of fighting her? But the significance of that scene went over my head on the first viewing of the episode because in the whole series they only spend about 10 minutes exploring that aspect of Yuta's character. When really that's something that should be given 3 or 4 episodes to explore.

>I'm not shocked because most otaku today are so pathetic they have trouble holding down jobs.
Otaku actually spend lots of money on anime merch, and certainly buy more discs on average than the Japanese public at large. This is why otaku shit tops so many sales charts despite anime etc being a niche market. But the Japanese economy hit another slump in 2008, which is what brought an end to the anime boom we saw in 2006-2007. People just had less money to spend in general, and this includes otakus. Outside of a few hit series it's becoming harder and harder to move discs for anything that isn't an idol anime. This is what happens when your consumer base has less money. Although one could make an argument that it's also related to a decline in anime quality and competition from mobile games etc, I guess.
No.890118
>>890112
I don't think you can talk about a decline in quality affecting sales, since that's such a subjective thing and the audience is always being refreshed and evolving alongside the medium. Even if anime isn't as technically competent as it was a few decades ago, the newfags aren't going to know that and it won't stop them spending money on it.
Also skeptical on the mobile games aspect. Japan is addicted to those things but I don't think that necessarily means people who used to be anime otaku are going to suddenly dump their old obsession altogether. If anything, successful mobile games with anime adaptations should create more money for the animation industry as they draw in new people.
Hasn't the big reason for why BDs don't sell been that they're ridiculously overpriced? Granted that wouldn't explain a drop in the purchase of merchandise.
No.890159
>>890046
I don't think it should have warranted that many episodes. The stinging implication of Yuta longing after Rikka is more obvious when you realize that Rikka is modeled after Akane's IRL self, implying Yuta loved Akane more for what she actually was than how she wanted to be seen. Though another way of looking at it is that Yuta is the NPC who diverged the most from his programming and was therefore more suitable as a Gridman relay.

No.890229

It's more due to the fact that wages are flat since investors are the only ones that "recovered" from 2008. It also doesn't help that the anime industry has been getting bloated as of late. More anime is made now more than ever and it's all competing for a small pool of otaku money in a niche market.
I'm thinking the industry will scale back in the next few years as low sales make current levels of production unsustainable. Honestly it kind of has to happen, these studios are pumping out to much and outsourcing to the lowest of the low in terms of talent to keep up, so we're seeing more and more disasterous productions like Marchen Madchen, Beatless, and Imolo.

The anime industry is booming and has record revenues and profits. It's more stable than is ever was in its history.
AJA releases a yearly report on the anime industry, and while it does have some flaws, the report gives a good overview of industry trends.
For their merchandise section, it's important to know that they just track the sales of goods for the 100 most profitable anime characters in a year. This doesn't include games, apps, advertisements/collaborations and other highly profitable content.
The drop in BD sales can be explained by multiple things. Modern otaku might not value BDs as much as older otaku. And an increase in broadcast/streaming quality could have made BDs less desirable.
And the drop in merchandise sales might just be because of their flawed methology.
The overseas section is a bit of a mess, and I still haven't figured out what they actually track. But the large increase almost exclusively comes from China, and is likely merchandise reliant since licensing fees can't be that high based on Bilibili's revenue.
Even ignoring the finer details, fact is that the anime industry is booming.
The lack of 2 cour anime isn't because of money, it's because of a lack of staff. Especially 2D animators.
Despite demand for more anime and record revenue. The actual minutes of TV animation are stagnating. The issues are that 2D animators require lots of training, and the working conditions for new animators are terrible. In most cases new animators start as inbetweener or 2nd key animator (which is just a glorified inbetweener).
They get paid 92,500¥/93,333¥(JAniCA 2015) per month. This is with at least 250 hours of work per month, some of them even reach 350 hours of work per month.
Most studios are just contractors, which makes it even harder for working conditions to improve. First the studios need to negotiate better contracts with the production committees, and then the animators need to negotiate with the studios.
Sadly, I don't think payment for 2D animators is going to increase significantly. The large increase in revenue and profits is just going to make it possible for studios to hire 3D animators from other industries.

Not quite. It's kind of out there but look closely at things, especially concerning Akane and Rikka, and how they interact. Basically Akane is Rikka. The Akane Shinzo we see in the anime is more of an avatar, where Rikka is what Akane actually looks like. Backed up by the live-action shot at the end where the girl both looks like Rikka, has her pass carrier, and the same white jacket (or at least something very similar).
Yuta likes Rikka, but not Akane. Meaning Yuta likes Akane's actual self, not the projected avatar she's using in her personal world. I feel like Gridman chose him because he was the only one who's not only enchanted by the projected Akane, but also seems to favor the "True" Akane. S4Gridman is mostly about Akane Shinzo learning to accept herself for who she is.

It's hard to live with such a small amount of money, you're getting paid less than half the minimum wage.
>What are freelancers paid on average over there? If it's better than what animators are getting paid, then it's no wonder why 2d animation staff is so low.
That chart includes freelancers, most 2D animators are freelancers. New animators are normally paid per frame, and in rare cases have a low base salary (20,000¥-50,000¥) + boni for frames.
Most of them just get paid per frame and don't have any base salary, this means that you make significantly less money in your first years. Some new animators only make around 30,000¥ per month in their first year.
This is comparable to getting paid 1$ per hour in the US.
They live with their parents/relatives, because it's the only way to survive with such a low wage.
There are exceptions, Toei and Kyoani employ their trainees and pay very good rates compared to other studios. Toei pays 226,000¥ per month for new animators, Kyoani 200,000¥ pays per month.
It's of note that it's cheaper to live in Kyoto and that Kyoani also pays up to an addtional 50,000¥ per month for animations tools + resources to improve yourself as an animator. Both companies also have shorter work hours.
Still, as a foreigner it would be extremely hard to get the desired places in these companies.
If you want to work in the anime industry just learn 3D, better work hours, better pay, and you can easily move into better paying industries if you need to.
It is the future of anime, and based on sales otaku prefer 3D over 2D.

>More anime is made now more than ever and it's all competing for a small pool of otaku money in a niche market.
Maybe that might be due to lack of compelling advertising for fungible goods other than body pillows? I mean where's my new Gridman toys bruv? Where's my Akane/Rikku figmas?

What the fuck is going on in that image? She has a lace bra under her bikini top, but has her pantsu over her bikini bottom?

There are bikinis that are intentionally designed like that, it's all just one part.

She looks like a generic anime high schooler. Hell, she looks even more generic than usual because anime high school girls typically are given something that makes them stand out. Rikka just looks like a generic background extra. And worst of all, her thighs look just like every other fucking anime high schooler's thighs. The only difference is that she wears a skirt so small that she might as well not wear it. The way she exploded in popularity is something that I can only imagine is artificial, because her body is fucking identical to just about any other high school girl.

>The way she exploded in popularity is something that I can only imagine is artificial
It's pretty easy to explain. Western "thick" faggots and a few nips who are into that nigger fetish latched onto her simply because of the thighs thing you described with her skirt. When she started getting a little bit popular is when other people saw the potential to ride the bandwagon and turned her into a meme, just like that fucking female Bowser shit that was popular a while ago.

Just saying thank you because I'm chasing sources for what's in that. I've seen the Koakuma Kanojo one before but the rest are new.

>but doesn't a move like this work against their interests?
They are allowed to do this by copyright law because doujinshi are not technically legal. But no it absolutely isn't what they should be doing. The doujin scene as it relates to derivative works is basically free advertising.

I'm perfectly content to be a tertiary when it comes to bad anime or mobile games because the source hardly matters as long as the girls are beautiful and the content is sweet.

>The anime industry is booming and has record revenues and profits. It's more stable than is ever was in its history.
What are you the Anime Industry Defense Squad?
>The drop in BD sales can be explained by multiple things.
It's explained by people buying fewer discs. Either because they don't want to, or can't afford to. And given the state of the Japanese economy, the latter is plausible.
>And the drop in merchandise sales might just be because of their flawed methodology.
Rely on the numbers when they support your position and doubt them when they don't. Maybe the flawed methodology makes the drop in merch sales look smaller than it really is. That door swings both ways.
>The overseas section is a bit of a mess
The overseas money is mostly what's giving the revenue of more recent years a bigger boost. That and the pachinko-tie in and live entertainment money, data of which is missing from before '08 and '12 respectively. So either they didn't exist then or weren't being tracked. If these are novel streams of revenue, but it doesn't mean people are spending any more money on these things (pachinko and live entertainment) than they were before. Just that the anime industry is getting a cut of it now. Which is great for them, but doesn't stop Japan's economy from sucking. Money from other countries is great, but doesn't mean the Japanese are spending any more on it.
>The lack of 2 cour anime isn't because of money, it's because of a lack of staff. Especially 2D animators.
A 2 cour anime costs more money, and is a bigger investment. More money can buy you longer production times, which gives a smaller amount of staff more time to produce a 2 cour show. More money can also hire more staff, who would be all be working on a 2 cour show together, instead of e.g. on two separate 1 cour shows. It's not like there wasn't a limit to the amount of 2D animators available back in the days when 2 cour anime were more common.
>fact is that the anime industry is booming.
It's profitable enough that they keep making anime. How exactly do you define "booming"? And what is your point here? Are you trying to deny that the Japanese economy is shit, and everyone, even including spend-happy otaku, have less cash on hand?
>>891515
>At the very least 60% of that is China.
You say this like it's a good thing.
>If you want to work in the anime industry just learn 3D

Nostradamus speaks.
>and based on sales otaku prefer 3D over 2D.
Most 3D anime bomb. There's what, Kemono Friends, and some (mostly 2D) idol shows with 3DCG dance scenes that have been big hits? Everything else is 2D. If otaku preferred 3D, most anime would be in 3D by now.

>the source hardly matters as long as the girls are beautiful and the content is sweet.
It matters because people could be making doujins of better characters from better source material, but they aren't, since the good shows are rarely the same as the flavor of the season meme anime, or flavor of the year gachashit mobage.
