Flip Flappers director and next coming of Yamakan, Oshiyama Kiyotaka, left 3Hz and started his own studio back in April. He called this studio Durian.

And here's the kicker: Most of the website is half in English.

https://www.studio-durian.jp/

https://studio-durian.jp/news/

<<Greeting from representative>

>A high-quality animation that combines the intense smell like the durian with the popularity that makes everyone become addicted.

>That’s our purpose.

>We will explore the new value of the new era, and even the smell of it, too.

>Mass production is maybe harder, but with the goal of surely delivering excitement to the people who watch our anime, we will continue to make it work with our pride.

Wow. I'm very excited to see what the studio ends up doing. I was going to make the Flip Flappers 2nd anniversary thread in a few hours and this is really good news to me.

There's some fan works by artists like angeban and dacowazu in there. I find that touching.

The studio is founded by Oshiyama and the producer Yuki Nagano.

Nagano worked for Bones, and was the producer for Akagami no Shirayuki-hime and Mob Psycho, she also worked as production desk for Eureka Seven AO and Space Dandy, and at least according to ANN she did do some key animation for Yokai Watch and Gundam Age but she primarily works on the production side.

>>866337

>nip studio focusing on anglophone audience

It doesn't, there's English on the site because they have a service where Oshiyama checks your art/animation and gives you corrections/tips/his opinion.

Not from what I've seen, unlike the man himself.

Since the time I've been following Oshiyama, he mostly just posts drawings he does for fun and depressingly keeps retweeting and posting stuff about Flip Flappers because he can't get his mind off of what happened.

This is his Papika from when he was designing the demons for Devilman Crybaby.

If you don't know the story, I'll give you the whole thing without a tl;dr.

It all started with the Golden Age of KyoAni, which a man who goes by Yamakan was a part of. He worked on Haruhi, specifically as the choreographer of the famous Hare Hare Yukai dance, a huge idol fan himself.

Due to his successes, he was gifted with the opportunity to direct their next project, Lucky Star. For some reason, 4 episodes in they decided he wasn't cut out to be director and with the statement, "Yamakan is not at the level to be director yet" they fired him.

Later, KyoAni cleaned out half of their staff and began their now shoddy business practices, ending the Golden Age sometime around Hyouka and Nichijou.

This is when Yamakan starts shitposting loudly on Twitter about anime being dead, but how he's come to save us all with his new studio, Ordet. Many of the disenfranchised former KyoAni staff that were trashed followed him there and they began working on the dream project, Fractale. This is the anime that would save all of anime, highly experimental, but with roots in the classics. He went on and on about it on Twitter and Ordet put their souls into it.

The result? 883 total sales.

Ever since then, 1frt has been a unit of measurement for anime sales as a joke.

Shin Sekai Yori and Flip Flappers spring to mind immediately. Ambitious works that tried something different, but what they offered wasn't what the otaku demographic wanted. So they didn't buy it and they were flops. I guess because none of the anime-buying public thought the characters were waifu material, or something. I fear the same fate may befall Zombieland Saga.

It's Amazon ranking improved after episode 2, it's still only around rank 1000 but there's potential.

There's also the fact that Cygames is on the committee, so it's likely that there's going to be a mobage.

Flop Flippers had gay girls, pretty visuals, a highschool setting and a bit of fanservice. On paper, it seems like the kind of thing otakus would love.

Flip Flappers was really more about the trippy misadventures of the week than the otaku pandering. I don't think it was even noticed much in the west, not even "critically acclaimed." Or maybe it's because it didn't really play up the yuri aspects into the later episodes, while something like Izetta or Euphonium S2 did so from the start.
