Yes, it's a recap movie.

Yes, it's a cash grab.

However they did change the ending scene, which is what I wanted to discuss.

I've put the scene in webm format for your convenience

So the original ending had C2 lying in the back of a horse drawn cart talking to an "unknown man".

They've now change that so there is no cart or man just her on a horse reading a letter.

However the scene still has the cart wheel marks in the mud?

How does this affect the setup for the next series compared to the original ending?

I think it's worse.

It was very obvious they were implying he was alive at the last scene, but they left it ambiguous enough for people to discuss if that was really the case, and I imagine even for their own convenience if they ever wanted to make more Code Geass stuff in the future, so they could go with either route.

I've always believed he was alive simply because he's too smart to die. Remember in his fight against Cornelia in ep3 I think it was, Zero fled the battle and Cornelia said self preservation trumps all when it comes to Zero. So it would make sense that when dealing with the power of Geass he'd look for a back up plan, some way to keep himself alive through all this. And he found it in his father.
