I'm seeking and value your input /a/. While I'm probably the last person who should do it, I'm trying to start an Anime Club at my local college, which seems to be the only one without a club in the area. We've only got a handful of people so far, but it's one of those situations where you can be certain there are many more people who want one; you just have to ask around and they pop up everywhere. From what I've been reading, it's not like the 80s or 90s where Clubs served as distribution hubs for Anime and Manga. Nowadays you have to have additional things to do and interesting gimmicks to keep the club going, and to retain as well as attract new membership. My concern is this though... time and again, I've read stories here and elsewhere where Anime Clubs have been total cancer. Stories where the people are trashy and obnoxious, and have shit taste. They're the kind that have been infiltrated by landwhales, SJWs and narutards, and autists (not the good/contributing kind) of most flavors. How do I form up a good club that will last into the future with a good state of mind and way of thinking that will carry forward after I graduate? What are some things I need to be aware of, or to keep in mind? Your thoughts, /a/?

 No.861831

It's not like I have personal experience, but attracting casuals with shit taste is probably just inevitable, since that's the majority of the public, and the ones more likely to not be socially retarded, ie. willing to join a club.

SJWs, it depends on your college. I think if you have a couple like-minded people, if you occasionally shoot some mildly racist/sexist jokes, they should see themselves out. If your college is drinking too much koolaid, this could get you in trouble instead though.

My advice is give up.

Anime isn't a niche subject anymore, so it doesn't have that natural filter of unpopularity that keeps normalfags out. Without that filter, you're going to be recruiting from the entire population which is roughly 95-99% brainless NPCs. And not only that but the medium at large has now been co-opted by people with financial or political interests trying to lead the normacattle herd around to serve their purposes, so at worst you aren't going to just get zombies and morons, but the kind of people who are actively detrimental to both the medium and to the social order of the group.

Besides, you're already part of one anime club.

If I were recruiting for an anime club, then I would hang up this poster various places all over the uni, with something like: "[enter uni. name here] anime club, grand opening! Screening Porco rosso the DD.MM at XX.XX o'clock in the main Lecture hall, be there!" Underneath. Of course, after getting it approved by the uni staff.

>We've only got a handful of people so far, but it's one of those situations where you can be certain there are many more people who want one

Careful, I've tried making a club before. Everyone says they want one, but when you tell them it's happening and ask what times would work best, they're indecisive or avoid the subject. Once you have one established, about 1/10th of the people who say they'll show up will actually show up.

>How do I form up a good club that will last into the future with a good state of mind and way of thinking that will carry forward after I graduate?

You basically can't unless you attack this aggressively and make a campaign out of it. Otherwise as soon as you leave, things will begin to take a nosedive as soon as you're out. You might keep it going for an additional year or two, but that's usually about it without some university professor's influence, and then the club will only last as long as that Uni professor is there.

>What are some things I need to be aware of, or to keep in mind?

Very, very few people have a desire to help you. Expect anyone who says they'll help you to bail on you 50% of the time (90% of the time if it involves any level of driving or showing up when they aren't physically there at the Uni already), and expect any kind of activity that involves more interaction from a club member than showing up to the room or sitting at a table between classes for an hour or two (while they don't even do anything but study) to flop. That's ok though, having more people at a club table makes people come to the table. The tumblr folks are going to show up either way, so you either need to push the direction of the club with an iron fist (in which case you will lose members that the tumblr folks will take with them) or you need to in general just make it unappealing to them from the start (moe anime works good for this, but is off-putting to the types of uni people who usually want to go to an anime club). Know you can't kick a person out of the club unless they're seriously being ridiculously obnoxious (at the level of screeching during episodes kind of levels of obnoxious) or violating the student code of conduct. Otherwise your club will be shut down. Also, the autist who is in the right is in the right, but when he talks about loli anime or some other topic that isn't normalfag-friendly (or is a nitch genre in general), it WILL cost you members, so the anime that you like might not be the anime you can show to the club since it might rile the autist into action attacking other club members. Other club members will want you to do something about these problematic individuals, so it will be up to you to find a good balance between kicking out "anime extremists" and tumblr shitters to keep the club healthy.

Oh right, and it would be best to have a two-tier club. One club should be tied to the university, and a second club should be a "get-together of club members outside of the club." The official club is where you'll have to have your interactions with tumblr-tier niggers and redditors ruining anime, and in effect it will be your uni-approved club where anyone and everyone can join/act as a recruitment base. By making the "get togethers" be non-club events held off-campus such as at a local bar or someone's house (you can advertise them in-club, just mention they aren't tied to the club), you can be as selective as you want and do whatever you want with that "second club" (which will eventually likely become a mix of graduates, students, and non-students). Your "second club" is going to be what really drives people in so I highly recommend you do it, even if you have to dedicate 1-3 hours of your time once a week to it and maybe spend a couple hundred bucks a month renting a church basement or something for an hour or two a week.

Basically what I'm saying is have the normal uni club be anything goes so long as it isn't costing you members, and then tell people you're doing a second club not tied to the school at an off-campus location. Use the second club to recruit the kind of people you want for the club. Do events for both, but know you can do stuff that the school would shut down like kicking out tumblr weebs by having an official club and a second unofficial club.

Porco Rosso is a good choice because it's just mildly sexist enough to piss off the tumblr weebs, and just old enough that it will keep out the shitters while still being very much a "manime" for the hot-blooded folks.

>Of course, after getting it approved by the uni staff.

This does bring up another point though, OP. Unless the event is in a public area never mention that you plan to watch ANYTHING to uni staff. It doesn't matter if there's only three people in the club and you're watching shit on a DVD you bought in English Dubs, if a Uni catches word that you're watching a film they will go after you because they're overly cautious about getting sued for having a "public event featuring a film without paying royalties." The technicians and staff that has to help you get the anime set up on the TV screen won't give a shit, but the "politician/administration staff," that is the people who approve your club and allow you to exist, will rip you a new one if you don't have explicit permission from the studio that produced X to play X at the university, no matter how asinine or impossible it would be to obtain that permission. Tell anyone who's not a club member absolutely nothing about your club's activities unless it is necessary to get funding for some project. I was part of a club that did this. One year we told the school absolutely nothing and we got our plane tickets and hotels paid to go to DC for some conference. Another year we mentioned that there would be alcohol in passing at the exact same event because everyone going was over 21 and it wasn't an issue, and the Uni not only cut our funding for going to the event but froze our club account for 4 months while they did an "investigation" of us/we had a fucking staffer supervising every single one of our meetings during that time/jotting down notes about every little things we said that she considered "problematic."

I was going to post a long winded thing about opsec plans involving dual viewing lists and downloading materials onto discs off-campus (to throw off the club advisor) and the preferences of members thus far, but I don't think it's worth it (not lazy or giving up, just trying to keep myself on topic). As for times, we're going to have a meeting about things this Tuesday at 5:00 or 6:00 PM, and I'm aiming for late Sunday evenings/Sunday Nights for viewing times since we're from a satellite campus, but I want to include interested students from the main campus. I'm studying Mechatronics for example, so my day starts with theory at 8:00 AM and concludes with the end of lab at 3:00 PM. Most businesses in town that we need (banks, compressed gas dealers, hardware stores, people that for some reason only run their business during the common man's working hours) close at 5:00 PM, which sucks for both US and THEM. As for club activities, there would be viewing shows and chatting about material at first, and gaming too I would think. I would kind of like to get it to the point where we might be a part of festivals or travel to a convention, but that's a long, LONG way off. It would be cool to do a Halloween Cosplay event at some point too.

>>861867

You posted while I was typing, and I'm glad you brought this stuff up. I don't know why I didn't consider doing two-tier club instead of two-tier viewing list, but it's a good idea if we can find a good place to settle in. I'm good at facilitating things but I need to understand available logistics first.

>>861868

I kind of wondered about that too. I'm willing to spitball that the IT goys monitor network traffic and probably have flags and triggers, and while one guy might watch an anime stream in between classes or something and not cause anyone to give a shit I was thinking of ways to keep network traffic and paper trails to a minimum (see downloading to discs). These are all logistics issues that we're going to have to discuss on Thursday, and we may want to thoroughly acquaint ourselves with campus policy books in the interrim time too so we might be able to jew our way out of any problems using loopholes and technicalities.

Sorry if any of this post seems like a random vomiting of answers, but I'm caught between this and getting ready to go back to my place this evening so I can get into class on time tomorrow morning.

It has to be full of people who are passionate and want to share their passion. Make it an environment where everyone is expected to be studying their passions are share it with each other.

That's what clubs are meant for. You don't need events or any of that shit.

I would pretty much do this. Quietly play my favorite anime movies once a week in a small class room and wait for people to take interest, if they ever do.

>>861868

That spoiler terrifies me. Are you still around OP? How did it go?

Oh shit sorry. I've been so busy I haven't checked in. So far we have a good handful of people, but I'll give you the highlighted ones off the top of my head. It's kind of a cross section of society, a mix of people who are interested. There's a couple of guys that try to make time to meet up (and are usually there), one other guy who is my collaborator who is always there, and just before the weekend we ran into a couple of girls who sat down and watched with us. They regularly watched anime (they were watching Little Witch Academia) and one regularly goes to conventions. Also, we (collabanon, me, and the girl) sat around a coffee table and chatted for a while after the rec room shut down and one of the two had to leave. It was comfy. We talked shop about the medium, about past anime fandom, and about the evolution of it from the 80s on up. Somewhere in our conversation femanon joked about Boku no Pico and we had to tell collabanon not to look it up. While not warning him would've been funny, I don't want to see anyone from IT sodomizing him with a microscope. Pretty sure the other guy doesn't browse here now.

We kind of had a hard time figuring out what we were going to start with, but then I started playing GTO and fun times were had by all. I kind of want to figure out what everyone else's past shows and preferences are so we can watch something that, while one person may have seen it already, the rest of the group may not have. I want to move on making things official, but first I need to make sure that we have two representatives on campus who can go to club roundtable meetings (college meeting with ALL clubs). Things are working out so far.

That's great to hear! I hope you have more cozy times in the future and keep us updated or maybe just show up to tell us all about how everything fell apart. Anyway, I sure wish I had a group of friends to talk and watch anime with irl.
