No.853054
The anime club is where we choose one show to watch as if it was airing with a schedule we decide on. Discuss whatever episodes we've gotten up to in this thread. As for the question of "When do we consider Monday to have arrived?" just go by your own timezone, or if that's too late GMT. Once we finish the show we're watching, we choose the next one and the cycle continues. Most of the shows we watch are those hidden gems, old OVAs no one has heard of, or classics that nobody has seen. Anything goes. Currently the schedule is still being experimented with, so until we decide on a set schedule, the schedule may vary by show.

The soundtrack is surprisingly good. Really happy we picked this one since scifi is exactly what i felt like watching.
Let's hope they keep up with space episodes like this one.
No.853073
I really liked the chase scene in the beginning.
Also the way he closed the doors from the space ship using explosives, I hope they keep showing these little details.
Some of the designs including the characters aren't great, like their ship is a little weird with the japanese farmer's hat, but I still like them overall.
It looks this show, in contrast with Lodoss, is going to have more movement in the place of good looking stills, which I'm fine with.

I'm not sure what type of sci-fi it is, but it feels like Saber Marionette or Outlaw Star. Some kind of fantastical Oriental sci-fi.

I dropped out early in Lodoss but I had watched before.
This on the other hand was on my backlog since forever and man do I enjoy it.
I love these kinds of fantasy sci-fi settings and the fantasy part in this one is really interesting. Everything is so strange and exotic, it feels like experiencing Morrowind for the first time again.
The spunky tomboy MC is a nice bonus too.
>>853073
>I hope they keep showing these little details.
Yeah, I love those details. I love those bits of weird tech and culture, like seeing these shields activate or when her Nii-san kept flicking those hair beads as a good luck charm.

Things I liked:
>Everyone has their own interests at heart, like a true band of rogues who are in it for their own reasons, and they end up stepping on each other's toes all the time because of it, leading to some fun hijinks.
>Space was quiet, and it made an effort to show as such.
>Onii-san's voice. The seiyuu was having lots of fun with it.
>The sounds, especially during Bobu's sacrifice.
>Zeiram's design and execution
No.853516
I'm trying to get a grasp on how many people know about Zeiram. The ship and now this episode make it feel like there are people using this thing just to destroy things that get in their way.
No.853519
The voice on transceiver sounded to me more like Bob than Glen. How far are these things supposed to reach if she doesn't find it odd that they can communicate? I would think if they were in range of each other, he would have to be on the same planet. Which leads me to the conclusion that the Zeiram has fused to Glen just like it did with the gun. The hat part and its tentacles are the actual Zeiram and it absorbs things for its own uses. Probably it also enhances them since it's some kind of super-advanced symbiote.

Really didn't like the fact that apparently the bad guys can't aim at all missing all shots even in pic related.
The elevator scene was great though, especially the part where Iria cut the elevators cable with that purple thing.
No.854329
I don't know if this is breaking news or not, but this anime is actually based on a live action film from 1991. The director was apparently already a prolific director and designer for sentai stuff by the time he made Zeiram. I watched the movie. Now, I'm not shitting on the anime, but most of the really good designs were pulled from the movie.
One thing the anime did really well though is the cityscape with the mushroom buildings and all. And besides that the anime is a much more enjoyable watch than the movie. I think one of the big problems with the movie is that half of the movie focuses on two goofy characters instead of Iria.
Also those tanks look almost as ridiculous as those G Gundam's designs.

I get the feeling that they wanted to wack at least one character to maintain tension. The boy was mostly useless aside from saving iria, maintaining the specter of death, and rounded the tomboy out. I also get the feeling they didn't dwell on it because they only have 6 episodes.
The tomboy couldn't be killed because plot armor is dictates she makes Iria's character growth cyclic. By the end Iria essentially becomes Gren.

No.856074
The Borobdin coming back was really great, tying together what we saw about it from the first episode and heard about repeatedly later. They didn't overdo it either, they only had to mention it a few times. Nice to see my prediction about the Zeiram and Glen be sort of right. It's ability to produce clones is quite powerful, though I wonder why it didn't do that before. The most important question is: what reinforcements was it calling for?
>>856050
Even the best tomboy cannot disguise her girl scent. It's an unusual smell of sweat different than that of men. Kei must reek of it since she's an unwashed street urchin.

A really good final episode, my favorite episode I think. I think this is an unpopular opinion, but I liked this better than Lodoss.
As for the next thing we're gonna watch I'm fine with whatever, but I would suggest going back to 2 episodes a week. If we were to pick a longer series and doing 2 episodes would take too long to finish, maybe we could start watching 2 series simultaneously? A long one and a short one?
I don't know how the previous club (Miracle Girls) worked out, but with that previous experience in mind, what do you think of that?

I really like episodes 1 and 3. The others were only okay. I kind of enjoyed this more than Lodoss, but thats also because Lodoss tended to drag on a bit and we were watching it very slowly. Iria was at least short and sweet.

I thought Iria was pretty good, better than a lot of 80s and 90s OVAs at least. But I liked Lodoss more even if Lodoss had certain aspects I dislike in Japanese fantasy. The best episode of Iria was definitely episode 3, which is funny because it didn't have the Zeiram at all. I'm still confused about what Zeiram is exactly. They said it was some sort of ultimate weapon which made me think it was a uniquely made creature, but the fact that it was calling for allies (which are presumably other Zeirams) would lead me to believe that it's an entire species.
We definitely shouldn't add another show. In my opinion, that was one of the downsides of the original club. It worked pretty well when we were watching Kino and Miracle Girls but once we finished Kino discussion of the second short show we picked up was pretty much dead. Same with the weekly movie. It makes the thread too confusing to have discussion of two separate shows. If we want to pick up a longer show we can talk about adjusting the schedule to accommodate it. As the schedule is now, shorter shows work best, OVAs or 13 episode shows.

I wonder if being a prequel to a live action movie helped or hindered it. Reading into the movie it seems like there's inconsistencies with this OVA and the live action movies.
No.858235
I watched episodes 2--6 in one go, fun series. Pictured sequence was freaky---it's the sort of thing that would work as a pretty decent jumpscare if the audience wasn't expecting it. I got a similar feeling when watching this as with Haibane Renmei, in terms of the proportion of the worldbuilding we see vs the worldbuilding we don't, which gives a sense of wonder. A near-optimal amount of worldbuilding, although I personally prefer having more questions answered. Zeiram was a pretty cool antagonist especially due to its design and the sound work. What was the deal with the company president's pendant? The recorded message was just him gloating to whoever about being able to control Zeiram, it's stuff we learn by the end of the first episode. Did that person in the picture end up mattering at all?
Sometimes it felt like that depending on how the scene needed to go, Zeiram could be presented as some completely unstoppable force slowly walking towards you even in the face of gunfire, or alternatively something that could be kicked or pushed around by a girl. The human soldiers' gunfire seemed unbelievably ineffective against the Zeiramoids in the last two episodes given how vulnerable they were to the Hunters' guns and blades.
>>856462
>I'm still confused about what Zeiram is exactly. They said it was some sort of ultimate weapon which made me think it was a uniquely made creature, but the fact that it was calling for allies (which are presumably other Zeirams) would lead me to believe that it's an entire species.
My guess is that it either is, or is derived from, an alien lifeform from the edge of whatever the human territory is in the setting. While it is an ultimate weapon, I think the situation is that the company tried to clandestinely weaponise an existing being, especially since there's a ban in place due to previous attempts going wrong.
I prefer three episodes a week over two, and not watching more than one series simultaneously, but these are not strong preferences.

I always like this shot. Episode 3 as a whole is pretty weak since the plot is too similar to episode 2 right before it, and I feel episode 2 works better since we get to know Irene at the same time as Linna does while Sho and his mom just kind of appear all of a sudden as Priss has been taking care of Sho this entire time. But this shot alone redeems episode 3 for me, even if you ignored the battle scenes beforehand. It just sticks out so sharply in this episode to me. It is a beautiful composition.

And since we are 2/3 done with rocket girls we should start thinking about possible shows to watch next time. I added this one. I've been meaning to re-watch this weirdo bullshit and I think more people need to know about it.

I put Rocket Girls on hold at around episode 5 because I didn't like the characters too much, but watched 6--12 all in one go last night. Not too sure why I chose to continue at the time. I suppose it was the way the OP always ends with Yukari as the commander of a successful space mission, which is something inspiring, and something to look forward to while watching the episodes. So I'm glad I did, because I enjoyed the second half of it a lot more than the first.

When does the next thing starts?

Yukari becomes more bearable in the second half once she stops being such a brat and accepts her role as the protagonist.
>>873071
It would probably be best to wait until the 26th to watch the first episode, that will give enough time for any anons to vote and to download a version of the show.
No.873247
And Rocket Girls was okay, but it didn't really excel in any department. I do agree that the second half is the better part of the show because of how it starts to finally focus on space, but I felt that the entire plot of fixing the orpheus was a let down. The technical knowledge was the best part of the show, and I think that was because JAXA assisted in the production.

Thanks for taking over for today, been really busy lately but I'm looking forward to this.

No problem. I figured that might be the case.
No.874006
I was not expecting to see a Luftwaffe pilot as the main character of the first episode, let alone having it with that kind of moral dilemma. I know nothing about the aviation specifics between the various planes during WWII but it seemed to try to be as authentic as possible.
No.874046
There is nothing quite like the way Matsumoto Leiji draws beautiful women.
>>874006
One of Captain Harlock's ancestors was a Luftwaffe pilot so for Matsumoto it's not that unusual. Seems like the Tank 152 was a real plane, though when I initially watched the episode I thought it was just made up for effect. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Focke-Wulf_Ta_152

The second episode made me cry and I'm not a person to choke up at things either.
No.874647
>>874053
There's a lot of little things that got me emotionally invested this episode. The way the survivors apologized to the Ensign, the way that the Japanese pilots are drawn like some child manga and then die in midair, even the Americans get some screentime in an effort for you to empathize with them.
No.875135
Since the last episode for the cockpit was yesterday and participation has been slow I was wondering if anons still wanted to continue with this.
No.875241
>>875135
To be honest /a/ itself has been rather slow over the past couple of weeks so I'm not sure if the club slowing down is a reflection of it or not. Either way if interest is waning, then it might be for the best to resume the club at the beginning of January than to just let it die again.
No.875266
>>875135
It's probably because this season is better, or at least more popular, than the last. This >>875241 anon's idea could work. If there's ever a hidden gem that anon wants to share, we can start the club back up again. As it is, does anyone have any suggestions for next show? We've kind of just been leaving it up to whatever gets put on the polls.
No.875321
>>875266
The polls were out of fairness, but if it's just going to be a handful of people someone can just suggest something and I'd watch it as long as there was some discussion to be had.
No.875716
I haven't been posting much in this thread but I'd like for the club to continue. I don't have any suggestions for the next series though.
No.875719
I've just been going over some of my lists and found the one I saved from Hitoshi Doi's anime page where he lists a bunch of shows he likes. So I'll suggest one that caught my eye: Voogie's Angels.
>A hundred years after Earth is invaded by aliens, the last remnants of the human race dwell in underwater "Aqua Bases." A team of five cybernetically enhanced women is trained for the purpose of carrying out guerilla attacks against the occupying forces. Earth`s last hope for salvation is...Voogie`s Angels.

Huh, it's based on a radio series, that's interesting. I've never heard of this one before.
No.875818
>>875719
Sounds like a good choice, but I haven't seen any torrents for it on nyaa, so we're going to have to use private trackers if we go ahead with it. Or someone could torrent it and then upload it to mega or drive so anons who don't have access can watch it as well.
And since the club has been going on for four months, what would you guys say which series was the best, or at least how good each show was in comparison to each other?
No.876410
Well as of now I think it would be best to possibly close the club until January because there seems to be a general lack of interest. We could watch more shows though like how >>875719 suggested Voogie's Angels, but we would need to set up the schedule beforehand to have a discussion about it..
No.876416
>>876410
You could probably still do it on a MWF schedule, it would be done around January. It would require a few more anons though.
>>875818
I'll say that Rocket Girls was probably the weakest show watched so far, the first half can drag as the protagonist eventually accepts the plot.
No.878056
>>876416
I know it's a week late, but the MWF schedule is why I stopped participating, honestly. I just can't make the time to sit down for a half hour and watch another anime three times a week on top of trying to keep track of my backlogs and seasonal anime in my limited spare time. That's like picking up three seasonal anime for me when I usually only watch 2-4 airing anime every season as it is (shorts aside).
No.878193
>>878056
Maybe when the club restarts we could try a twice a week schedule to see how it goes.

Suggestion: more movies and short ova please?
