Martian Successor Nadesico by far. This concept image might be alright but to me they seemd unbelievably bland in the show. Though I might be biased as I really didn't like the series.
On the other hand, I loved Outlaw Star but the pseudo-mech ships in the show were just weird. I would have been better had they just been regular space ships, without those arms.

It's an obvious case of seeing a certain term being liked by pretentious assholes and declaring the world itself to be faggotry. It's feelings overriding critical sense, leading to such riveting arguments as >>834976 .
Now since I'm feeling generous, I'm going to be this faggot's advocate. Deconstruction is, I think, too simplistic a term for what's essentially a parody made for legit commentary on a genre rather than laughs. Especially since the goal is making something better than the contrivances of the genre, while parody is just making fun of it. Deconstruction is only part of the process - to be truly good, such a piece of media must also reconstruct something better out of it. Elevate it. That part just isn't part of the term.
There is also the fact that what is essentially a judgement passed on the norm is always going to sound pretentious in some way, and is definitely going to attract insufferable dipshits who think that knowing pop culture is a valid modern equivalent of being Descartes.

So every time I see a post like >>834838 with a weird baseless accusation that makes no sense ("You're from reddit", "You're from halfchan", "You're a crunchyroll shill") I just imagine it's someone who's literally crazy and thinks people from this particular group he hates are posting everywhere and he's always ready to call them out. The hero with a thousand faces is misinterpreted as fuck.
Many seem to think following it is the mark of an unoriginal work, but it is simply acknowledging a magical storytelling formula that works in all kinds of settings. It's not an ironclad rule, just a gold standard.
So while I think you're aware of this, nobody's deconstructing the hero with a thousand faces. Deconstruction always happen with specific genres, not universal constants of storytelling.
No.835092

>Without this happening, humans would still be telling the same story over and over
Do you know why there are certain stories with main points that keep repeating? Because at the core of each story, there is a lesson and there can be only so many expressions of the truth of the world. These stories are told over and over again in various variations of the same theme exactly because they speak of problems that will always be important to human beings. Yes, the themes are similar, we all feel pain, fear, anger and happiness, but the stories that surround those themes are anything but the same.
It is the fallacy of the postmodern parasites to say that because things repeat that they are bad. There is no originality in creating a contrarian piece of garbage that is devoid of any meaning that applies to this reality. To create something with a meaning, one inevitably will offer a variation of themes that are important to the human experience. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
The whole purpose of telling a story is to give a piece of information to someone else, to pass on some wisdom or lesson backed up by empirical evidence and experience. This core of wisdom and experience is meaning, it is what makes the whole thing worthwhile. No wisdom can be gleamed from something that purposefully tries to portray nothing that has existed before. No experience can be gained from something, that tries to be completely new for the sake of it alone.
Without certain beats, without certain harmonies with reality, you don't get a melody, you just get static noise. The only emotion you can feel from listening to such white noise is despair, a false perception of reality purposefully crafted to daze and disorient you until you become accepting to everything that happens around you with no question. But the true nature of our reality is struggle, and that is why it is inherent in vast majority of stories we tell, the stories that actually matter and are remembered.

No it isn't. John Campbell wrote this book to give his theory of the monomyth. FranXX designs are bleh as far as mechs go. When they make a mechwarrior anime without using CGI that'll be the day we all breathe a sigh of relief. In the mean while, we have decent things like Heavy Object and Full Metal Panic. Plus we have Juushinki Pandora airing now which has pretty good mech designs I think. Last... no maybe the season before that I can't remember we had Knights & Magic which, while not being a world-changer, managed to avoid being a drama-filled trash heap and just focused on the MC getting his dream of building Mecha for fun and warfare. The only drama was in the beginning to get him to the point where he had a lab to make shit, then the plot kicked in with political intrigue in order to get us to crazy fun fights between his flying turbo-booster robot against a huge flying dragon mech. I love TTGL but not really as mecha, the robots always felt more rubbery/boxy to me and never particularly mechanical. Shin Mazinger was a great series but more proof that mecha's glory days are in the past. Code Geass's first season was alright and it had some fun rollerskating robots, then R2 happened and in addition to the story going completely insane the robots got their lame flight upgrades which meant no more skating around like a ScopeDog, only flying now. It's a shame because I really like the Knightmare Frame's designs, I just wish they were used in a less retarded franchise. But yeah, mecha is over as a genre.

I love Votoms, old Gundams, G1 Transformers. These sort of things actually look like robots to me. I don't get this sleeker aesthetic, it worked well in Eva for various reasons, but I think a lot of the appeal of mecha came from the older, bulkier, and more simple designs. Stuff like Valverave I can't even follow. What is this supposed to be, a Digimon? That's actually an insult to Digimon. Machinedramon is boss. But I think it really was the aesthetics of the classic robots that made people like them, that these newer, more elaborate and/or sleek designs, are just less captivating, and are part of the reason why mecha has declined.

They're desperate to pander to the Otaku crowd so hard that they sacrifice the entire genre's strong points for this non-sense. We no longer get serious war dramas because you can sell more waifu figurines if you pander to that market. But this isn't even true. Eva was the inspiration for some mecha series in the 90s but the modern mecha is all slice of life CGI fests. It's inspiration is closer to a visual novel than it is any of the older mecha series. You could argue Gundam Wing and then Gundam SEED which is the evolution of Wing's boy band concept is the current inspiration for mecha series. Everything is this horrible personal drama mixed with real robots who unlock various glowing super modes that use CGI out the ass. Most of them designed to sell the harem figures over the robot themselves.
I found Votoms to be an interesting idea but it's animation is too dated to pull off any of those ideas. Old animation isn't usually a problem but Votoms is on the same tier of the Spiderman cartoon everyone uses screencaps from. You have single frames of animation and extremely limited colour pallets in the background. It's difficult to look past that.

I can't help but think that there is something satirical in anime now. Not that it's so deep that it can't be understood or the thought that some fanbases should be avoided. Just that it's taken too seriously to begin with. This started for me with the higurashi series. I literally thought it was a joke but sarcasm doesn't seem common in any culture outside of the west so even if there are meant to be a few creases in the common portrayal of any anime, we won't ever see them on display in a Japanese production. They'll play it seriously to the end until a creator somehow cracks in an interview and says something like anime should have been aborted (miyazaki). ParAphrasing/reinterpreting here. Don't want anyone to think he actually said this but who knows, maybe he was talking about goro.
