How is Gonzo the most underrated animation studio of all time when they constantly put out a variety of groundbreaking shows in the 2000s not to mention setting the best example for cgi to date

 No.821606

3DCG can die in a fucking fire.

 No.821607

I like most of their stuff that I've seen. I tend not to be a fanboy for a studio though and judge shows individually by their merits.

Why? Blassreiter, Karas, and Garo was next level

>underrated

Anon, those who know their shit, AKA not newfags, know Gonzo to be one of the first splinter studios from the original GAINAX crew. Gonzo consistently produces Otaku-oriented shows as a result. They even animated the Densha Otoko OP, which was a huge reference to DAICON IV.

Maybe the new crowd running around /a/ nowadays don't know their shit from shinola, but Gonzo is well respected from the conversations I've had.

The problem is that Japan can't really into 3DCG. Most of the time it's used, it's clunky and sticks out like a sore thumb, especially when it tries to emulate 2d styles. For every Infini-T Force, GARO or Etotama fight scene, there's at least ten Berserks, and two or three halfway there that manage to nail the artstyle but are still sluggish and clunky such as Souten no Ken ReGenesis.

>>821666

It's not that they can't, it's that it's hard on the budget and the schedule to make a fully 3DCG anime. Even the good ones usually cut corners with 2D animation where they can.

I'd say give it a few more years for people to get to grips with what they can and can't do. I expect we're going to star seeing a trickle of good 3DCG shows until one of them becomes really successful and starts really raising the bar and shows everyone how it's done. Houseki no kuni could've been it but I don't think it sold that well. The fact that a lot of what gets made these days translates much better to 2D than 3D is probably a good part of the reason it hasn't happened yet. If a big mecha craze came I bet it would spearhead much better 3DCG anime.

That is far and away a ridiculous example for use of CGI. Everything was hand-drawn, they simply used computer imaging to alter the look and feel of the show. Most CG looks far more like Berserk than Houseki no Kuni.

>Etotama fight scene

Those were fantastic. I hope the studio and CG artists were wonderfully rewarded for their efforts.

>Even the good ones usually cut corners with 2D animation where they can.

This is only true because certain scenes and styles of scenes have traditionally been too intensive or too hard for 3DCG artists, but this is no longer the case. Orange are professionals and they have already demonstrated the 3D tech creep, and you can expect the cost efficiency to change places quickly from here on. I'm not going to rehash the whole 'Orange even managed it on the cheap' thing because I'm sure anyone who was there for the Houseki threads remembers and is tired of hearing it.

This is a braindead myth and you should not perpetuate it.

Only one scene in Episode 8 used 2DCG guidance, and that was because it was a pivotal moment for the whole season and very difficult to animate 'correctly'. Their primary tools were 3D unique, including brief bouts of Motion Capture to allow for very specific and lifelike movement, and procedural software that allowed for autonomous and believable facial animation with minimal guidance.

Remember, a victory for Orange is a victory for good animation, a loss for Orange is a green flag for garbage peddlers like GEMBA to take center-stage as soon as 2DCG falls behind.

>including brief bouts of Motion Capture

This hardly counts as CG. Technically it is, but it almost always looks a lot better than regular CG and has an element of artistry to it.

Any source on the proportions of drawing/CG/motion capture in HnK?

You can find the drawing notes as credited artists, the only episode that has it is 8, they included the footage in bluray.

Orange's blog has a few notes on mocap.
