Honestly I feel as if the manga really rushed the middle part, because sales were flatlining so he rushed all the way down to Nanachi to get that whole storyline going. What the anime did to put in "filler" in that area wasn't really effective, but it had the right idea. It was also required because otherwise the episode pacing would have been impossible. What could they do otherwise? Have only HALF an episode? Plus the art and the music is so goddamn beautiful that you can forgive it. Any extra MiA is good.

I'm not going to pretend to be a master of moon runes, but the conclusion that the usage of these speech patterns imply the speaker is a male is misinterpreting what it actually means to use this type of speech. Firstly, consider that it is not inappropriate nor even emasculating for men to use polite/uncontracted forms of speech, and that the extent to which Japanese speech is modified has very much to do with the speaker's hierarchy relative to others. The reason women avoid these rough speech patterns is because women generally are submissive in nature, and expressing themselves in a refined and delicate way makes them more attractive for obvious reasons. So if these speech patterns do not explicitly imply Nanachi is a male, what do they imply? That Nanachi is a dumpster child, someone with no notion of politeness or knowing their place. Politeness might be meaningful to bottom-tier workers in communicating with their superiors, but Nanachi's superiors (if any) would have been other rough talking street urchins. I am not concluding this means Nanachi is a girl though she fucking better be, but it means that her speech fits her character and past regardless of her sex.

 No.815572

>>815409

It's not just plain speech, it's manly speech. There is plain feminine /gender neutral speech as well, which Nanachi does not use. The bun specifically speaks impolitely in an "oyaji" style when she could be speaking impolitely in a girly or gender neutral matter. This is not a question of politeness but a deliberate choice for hyper masculine speech. I'm sorry but Nanachi has turned you into a furfag anon. He's an oyaji trapped in a kemo loli looking trap body.

>Any clue when the rest of the series is expected or a dvd?

A western release? Probably eventually since it's popular. A continuation? The second season was announced pretty close to when the first finished but there isn't really enough manga content left to adapt for a second season so don't expect it until late 2019 at the earliest. They are also releasing two recap movies but I doubt those will add anything new and are probably just to get non-TV watchers into the series.

Theorizing on Orth's defenses goes something like "imagine fighting the Zulu, except they also have man-portable nuke launchers. Fuck your guns."

 No.816628

I think I saw some disabled guns on one ship of the trade caravan.

Maybe it would just make the story boring. They are kinda in the 1890-1900 tech tier. Bolt actions, machine guns and artillery would tear the animals in the abyss a new one.

Maybe, they think that they don’t need them, because artifacts are better.

Or maybe firearms were tested before, but were useless against larger threats, like that hedgehog that dodged the blast. That still doesn’t explain why they aren’t used in the first layer, as a backup, sort of.

4. To mess with Ozen.

5. Something about the bond as a godmother.

6. Convenient excuse to sneak a peek at Ozen's titties.

7. Lyza may have been in poor health physically, mentally, and/or emotionally and unable to focus on caring for Riko at some point.

8. Like all other white whistles, Lyza's into some kinky shit.

9. Trying to catch a mouthful of Ozen's breasts while she's distracted with Riko (more messing with Ozen).

My take on it is that guns exist in the world, but Orth is too backwards to make its own, and as other countries are basically in constant low-key conflict with Orth to get more relics than their government is willing to sell (illegal cave-raiders came after even the fucking time-stopping bell), nobody will import arms into Orth either. I was originally gonna post a question to go along with all the lewd fetish posting, but the question ended up activating my almonds to do some actual theorycrafting, which I'm sure this degenerate mangaka would approve of.

The question was: if Reg and Riko fugged, do you think Riko could get pregnant?

Then I started asking myself why Reg even has a working dick in the first place, something he himself has asked. There's a few possibilities: like maybe a real person was converted to a cyborg somehow or perhaps the people who made him were just massive fucking shotacons. But then I thought about my question.

Tons of societies have seemingly been swallowed by the Abyss over who knows how many centuries or even eons. What if one of these societies made Reg and what if, contained in him, is some of their genetic material so they could, one day, live on. What if Reg's true purpose is to...make something in the Abyss?

The Abyss, of course, being Riko's womb.

Or maybe the mangaka just likes shotas.

 No.817471

>>817470

I think most signs are pointing to it being a conversion process. When the other layer manager robots were made, the technology was likely honed to eventually fit into a boys body, agile, small, innocuous. What was Reg doing at the surface? What's his relationship to Faputa, to Lyza? Even Ozen? He even has the same vital areas as humans, likely just converted.

It seems the ‘curse’ acts like a weak magnetic field. It can’t penetrate to the outside and gets significantly weaker over 20000 metres, until it’s effects are almost non existant e.g. birthday deaths.

How about building tunnels AND have multiple 15 feet lead doors, isolating the transport ways from the abyss itself?

They have ironclads and electricity, some minor containment would be easily feasible.

Of course, the price for artifacts will drastically go down the shitter, but who cares about trade with countries when you can make them your bitch.

I'm not sure something like this would work.

When Riko was in Bonedaddy's fortress, she was inside a building and yet she still felt the effects of just climbing those stairs.

It's not something physical like a gas that you can isolate but it seems like an energy.

However, in other parts it's described as a kind of blanket that exists in layers as well but doesn't cover everything 100% of the time. If someone was to dig a shaft like that, it would likely end up "overrun" by the Abyss anyway.

Also remenber that that's likely what Bonedrewd did for his elevator-of-happiness and it still affected the kids.

There's also the fact that we don't actually know the nature of the curse, so how it works is mostly speculation at this point. Consider that the local fauna seems capable of using it to detect things in it and even intentions. An elevator shaft might be perceived as a void by those creatures, who would try to invade it as soon as possible, perhaps set up ambushes or live inside the shaft.

And that's assuming they are simply animals with amazing senses instead of sharing a consciousness among each other, using the Abyss to coordinate. Bonedaddy could do it, maybe something else does it with the animals but it's much more primal?

Just think about it, underground mines almost reached 400 meters depth in the 20th century.

Yes, it is no comparison to the whole depth of the abyss, you could use the abyss itself as support.

The abyss is like one big main mineshaft.

Who would stop people from building bridges, after killing off the local fauna?

Also there are many plateaus in the abyss, which can be used as in-between bases.

E.g. modernise the gondola system of the 1st and 2nd layer, improve the connection to the already build base and build another one on the left, etc.

Modern equipment is probably the last thing you want in the abyss. Yeah, a gun could probably kill the small fry like a three-star Nakikabane, and it could probably even take out a whole pack of them, but you'd need at least .50 BMG (or a shit ton of 5.56) to take on a Scarlet Maw or to seriously go after an Ottobasu, let alone a Tamaugachi. The sounds produced from a gun alone would alert everything in the vicinity to your presence, which is a recipe for disaster when you consider you're basically in a giant mineshaft so sound echoes. "Modern day equipment" is basically worthless or a hinderance against most of the hazards of the abyss except maybe knife-resistant/knife-proof clothing. Yeah, guns will probably kill most monsters in the abyss, but they also give away your position to everything in the abyss. Based on some of the shit we've seen from the 1st and 2nd layers, we can consider our loli extremely lucky to have not encountered even more dangers.

 No.818081

>>818046

I'm no soldier, but ever since gunpowder was invented, the military equipment seems to gear more towards shooting from as far away as possible while still being accurate in terms of guns and "a gizmo for every situation" like grenades and other tactical shit.

The biggest defense the average soldier actually has is keeping his distance, since up close your helmet isn't going to help that much but if you have a weapon accurate at 500 meters while the terrorist can only shoot up to 100 meters, you could take him out entirely naked.

Keeping this in mind, some of the stuff in the Abyss might fall easily to modern weapons in the bigger more open regions, where you can spot and shoot something that's not close enough to maul you yet.

However, once you go down a bit and shit starts to pop up right in your face, even shotguns are likely not gonna help.

Don't forget that some of the creatures read the curse to predict your movements and react to them, good luck shooting something that can dodge everything you throw at it before you even press the trigger.

Arguably, the most important thing to survive the Abyss isn't so much an offensive method to take down your oponent but rather a defensive measure against him. Bonedaddy knows this, which his packets and his multiple bodies instead of relying on his lasers alone. Ozen knows this as well, which is why her artifacts don't just make her stronger, they also make her tougher.

The question here is... What's keeping Riko's mother alive?

 No.818088

>>818046

In terms of protection they won't do much against anything that is NOT modern day equipment.

When Reg fought that move reading monster, it could perice steel to a certain width. It was agile, poisonus, strong, and can read your moves. A gun from a distance would be effective but for defense wise? I would rather have something not slow me down. Unless some special kevlar is use to stop peircing but kevlar isn't effective for that or knifes in general, since knifes tend to just push fabric out the way. Most monsters there can be killed with superior firepower but we are not looking to erradicate everything.

There are two fundamental flaws with what you are trying to get to.

1. Most deadly monsters only need 1 hit to kill you.

2. If we kill everything we can't on our way down, we still can not go back up. I am unsure if space suits will protect you because the elevator still got both of the girls to lose their humanity.

With surviving it, I meant to carry out a mission (getting artifacts) and coming back to the surface, while still being operational.

If it can kill a tank or punch through a wall, it is able to kill the larger beasts, be it by shrapnel or hitting them directly.

And to kill it by classical means, that is already avaiable to delvers right now, will make more noise.

One supressor and subsonic ammunition will do the job.

Close quarters combat will truly be a large problem. But they can predict the future all they want, 5 guys mag dumping is an awful lot of lead, and there will be even more unpredictable projectiles coming towards the target when claymores, grenades, etc. are used.

Yeah, modern equipment is absolutely useless against the more dangerous beasts when you let them come near you. Also space suits wouldn’t protect. Riko was inside of the Geofront and stil got the curse.

You will have effectively pointed a flashlight you can't see into the eyes of an enemy who can, without realizing it, and it can follow the beam straight to you.

You have a point in a way, but "straight to you" is the direction the bullet is going, as well. I don't care what kind of instincts the monsters of the Abyss have; ain't nothing can dodge a chunk of lead going 1000mph. That's faster than nerve conduction velocity, so it'd be dead before it can even finish telling its body to dodge.

Really, the biggest thing here is that "modern equipment" isn't going to provide much benefit to a single delver or a small group. However, if you get an entire fucking SQUAD of marines going down there, they'll not have too much problem. See, animals (especially the ones in the Abyss) are not STUPID. If they encounter something that they definitely cannot kill that shoots off one of their limbs, they won't come back. If they're communal, they might even have the intelligence to tell others to avoid the threat. Do you really think Orby would have decided to try fucking with Reg again, after he Incinerated off 80% of his spines?

Then if we expand into slightly near-future territory, what about autonomous combat systems?

I'm thinking something like a drone helicopter. Big enough to carry ordinance an infantry squad can't, could carry the squad around, and can hover. Relatively simple IFF, just have the soldiers tagged with IR beacons or something to avoid friendly fire. It'd be ideal for the levels where there's plenty of air space, but would prove tricky in areas with tight navigation.

All that heavy ordinance, and it's controlled by silicone and circuitry. I don't think the Curse could respond to such a thing, or any automated weapon platforms.

Honestly you could just target Orby at long range with a Javelin and look away after firing. Be a bitch to carry all the way down there though.

The helicopter meme needs to die. The only reason they're effective is because third world countries don't have proper AA defenses, and even then, they shoot down helicopters all the time with fucking slavshit firearms. Helicopters are flying death traps. Even ignoring the 2nd layer forest or getting around structures in the lower layers that would require a damn fine pilot, helicopters would be one animal running into them/abyss-monkey throwing rocks in the propeller away from crash-landing. Imagine what a scarlet maw would do to a helicopter just from bumping into it! That's not even one of the various bird-like animals that could easily fly into the propeller while descending.

Since this a near-future autonomous helo, I've assumed that its self-navigation capabilities and sensor suite are top-notch and is capable of navigating the Abyss without human control. If an unguided, undefended little balloon could make it out of the Abyss, I think a big helicopter drone loaded with ordinance could too.

As the the "what is x monster bumps in to it", this thing is going to shoot anything coming at it that doesn't register as friendly. Anything too big for autocannons gets a missile. In my fantasy future world this thing is absolutely stuffed with ordinance. I'm no engineer so I couldn't begin to say how it all works on a practical scale, but the simple idea is a hovering weapons platform that counters the Abyss' perception field.

Clearly considering this is basic high school physics and minimum knowledge of how a helicopter works that could easily be taken from a short session of any videogame where you have to pilot a helicopter. Self-guidance is shit for anything bigger than a human head/faster than about 30mph, anon. No, saying "it's the future" doesn't magically make helicopters any less shit. This is fucking Newton's laws of motion here, anon. All those military vids of them shooting shit with guns on a helicopter involve stationary targets with the guns pointing down in wide open airspace so the propeller can counter-balance the force of firing guns/missiles, and the helicopter still shifts.

You're going to take that concept, and stick it in an enclosed space (anything after the first layer is an enclosed space), and proceed to attach weapons in every-which direction because shit might sneak up on you, and then fire said weapons on a moment's notice without preparing to counter-balance the force of ejection. It would take a gyroscope the likes of which they use on SpaceX relanding rockets to even get retardedly close to fathoming that level of technology, or a god-like pilot. **Also only a fraction of balloons make it up at all, and after the 2nd layer basically none do. They rely on sending shit tons and hoping delvers in the 2nd/1st layers happen to find them.

I have to wonder what defense contractor you're working for, shilling against helicopters so hard. Attack helicopters are less susceptible to AA defenses than jets because they operate at low altitudes and always attack from terrain cover. Aircraft like the A-10 are the actual meme and would be useless in symmetric warfare. Also the recoil of shooting the cannon is tiny compared to a helicopter's inertia and firing missiles generates zero recoil.

That being said, no modern aircraft could operate safely in a shaft 1000m wide.

Oh, yeah, it's not like dozens of helicopters were lost to unguided RPGs and even small arms fire in the Middle East. You want to see what a helicopter can do? Take a look at Karbala. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_attack_on_Karbala

Helicopters are shit. They're slower, shorter in range and time on target, larger and heavier for the same payload, far more expensive, more complex, and harder to fly than a fixed-wing turboprop.

>symmetric warfare

 No.818833

Helicopters suffer from a user interface and coordination problem. The pilot only has very limited control over a small number of actuators, and the gunners have at minimum a 1 second communication lag with the pilot.

Imagine if you put three humans in control of a bird. One has a couple of sticks to control how fast the wings flap and what angle the tail is at, one has a pair of joysticks for the feet, and one has a joystick and button for the beak. Do you think those people could navigate the bird through city environments or catch bugs out of the air?

That's the difference between a human pilot and a fully integrated AI.

They also operate at sub-sonic speeds, and a fucking sandnigger with a soviet-era rifle can shoot it down, though generally as >>818831 pointed out, unguided RPGs are effective. The only advantage of a helicopter is that because it's low altitude, if you have air superiority (or at least don't have to fear AA) you can launch surprise attacks with them or hover in the air around a battlefield for long periods of time during ground-raids.

>Firing missiles generates zero recoil

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't realize missiles break the laws of physics. Even if you have them self-propelled you still have to thunk 'em out of the vehicle.

The other anon was talking about future technology. Anyway, beating a game is nothing to sniff at. Piloting a helicopter and performing point defense can be reduced to little more than a game.

 No.818864

>I didn't realize missiles break the laws of physics.

They don't. You can launch them from a tube which is open at both ends. The thrust from the exhaust being ejected out the back of the tube exactly balances the thrust from the missile being launched out the front.

If missiles had significant recoil they couldn't be launched from the shoulder by foot soldiers.

I don't know how to explain it in any simpler terms.

If a standing person can fire a hand-held weapon without being knocked over, it doesn't have enough recoil to affect the flight of a military helicopter. I'd be more worried about the heat from the rocket exhaust than the tiny amount of force it transfers through friction and air movement.

I ended up waking up from the dream and felt incredibly sad and went out to my car, called my mom up (it was only about 9:30 PM) and told her I loved her and that I just wanted her to know that.

This webm proves two things. The first is that if a helicopter's cannon was so huge it comprised 30% of the takeoff weight, it would struggle to fire and remain stable. The second is that you're a retard for even trying to equate these two vastly different examples. You cherry picked the one example that combines the highest ratio between recoil force and aircraft mass that has probably ever been created in the history of the world, nice going pedant.

Repeated reminder that missiles generate zero recoil whatsoever, which is where this chain of replies began. Missiles clear themselves from the launch tube using a smaller rocket motor which achieves thrust by accelerating reaction mass in the opposite direction exactly the same as the main rocket motor. NOT by pushing off any part of the aircraft. And even IF they were launched using a spring or pyrotechnic charge the forces would be utterly inconsequential. This stuff should go without saying but you guys are such massive pedants someone has to say it.

 No.822358

>>822352

I hate to agree with this guy, because he's a pompous asshole; but he's completely right.

The idea that you can't put rockets/missiles on helicopters is, from the very start of it, belied by the simple fact that IT'S ALREADY DONE. Just look up "helicopter firing missiles" on youtube or whatever, and marvel at the magic as they DON'T fly backwards from the recoil. Helicopters aren't floating in a vacuum; the air the rotors push on (and to an extent: the rest of the fuselage) is providing the exact same resistant force as the ground your hypothetical soldier stands on. If you stick your ass out the window and let out a fart, it's not going to make the helicopter move in the opposite direction — not even a little.

I'd sage for off-topic, but the thread is in autosage anyway. Have to wait for dumbass to finish the next chapter before we get a new thread.

So do they just have weird hair or are they like the village people and have more squidkid tentacle hair type stuff?

So is /a/ dead, or does nobody care about good content?

I wish I would have watched this while it aired rather than putting it on the backlog like a retard.

I feel you on episode 13. The whole Mitty subplot felt forced compared to the excellent tenth episode. In the tenth, the people suffering are main characters and thus developed, unlike Mitty who as a human is basically only introduced to be gruesomely disfigured a few minutes later (haven't read the mango yet, maybe it's done better there). The suffering has an important plot purpose, too, because with a few exceptions in the beginning, the dangers of the Abyss were treated somewhat comedic rather than the "got hit? fuck you" death trap it's talked up to be and starts to be again in that episode. Mitty doesn't serve much of a plot purpose except to establish a still rather bland antagonist and a new party member, but this could have been done in many other ways.

Finally, the suffering was appropriate, as in, it wasn't over the top. The flashback was a bit hollow already, but was it really necessary to show Mitty's transformation in full? Having her blood-covered on her fours or maybe even the flesh bursting from her back would have been enough in my opinion; when her face melted it just began to feel like gore porn and cheap shock value. When Riko gets stabbed, everything bad that follows feels natural, even the way the curse is tied in, even though (or maybe because) they are in an area where it seemed like the curse wouldn't be very relevant.

I'm not saying that it's a shit episode and not even that I didn't cry, but compared to what came before it fell kinda flat.

No one took the initiative to make a new thread when the new chapter dropped. I only realised yesterday that we got one. Could always make a new thread now if you really want to.

The point isn't to care about Mitty, but about Nanachi who cares about Mitty. You can feel Nanachi's pain and suffering; that's the point.

>Rather bland antagonist

You better not be talking about Bestdad, or I will sic the hoards of this thread on your ass, and you'll be lucky if you come out looking as good as Mitty.

But the same argument goes through for Nanachi, she's a bit too new at that point to make the backstory not seem forced. Maybe I'm jaded from shitshows that use Instant Tragic Backstory™ to make you feel sorry for a character, but I didn't care much for Nanachi at all.

>You better not be talking about Bestdad

No bully, I didn't read the manga yet.

Compared to the manga, animated bonedad so far is downright tame. A truly vanilla person.

And yet, when I first saw it, I was in love.

You are in for a fucking ride, anon.

There's a limit to how much you can be expected to bond with characters over a series that is only twelve(ish) episodes long. At this point, "jaded" would be the right word if you're incapable of basic empathy. If some kid gets hit by a car in front of you, do you not feel sorry for him because you don't know him?

>Some moist shit happens

NO IT DOESN'T!

There's no organ\limb harvesting nor does the situation with nanachi get solved or even anything new with the creepy lady!

There's just a big bad motherfucker that comes to show everyone how he's still the big bad motherfucker in an excelent metaphor for capitalism, but that's it!

Unless we are counting Riko cutting her hair short to buff up the cool bug as "moist shit" due to the symbolism of cutting your hair short.

>>827489

I feel like some people need a very long story and personal details to care about a character while others just end up falling for anything shown in a sympathetic light. Maybe some people just watch anime\movies\stories for the entertainment and don't go looking for the empathy angle, while others can more easily abstract themselves and thus only need 1-2 episodes to care about a character.

It seems obvious how it will. Riko will somehow take down the big jellyfish thing, which will have so much value that she can buy back Nanachi and have change left over.

She's the MC; she ain't gonna die, don't be silly. Technically she's already dead anyway.
