I hate anime series that make people say shit like "Japan is really weird, what the fuck" like this one.
But holy shit this is good.
I mean this is weird and cringy, the fact of "animal girl school" is just overused, the MC girl that acts kind of stupid and clumsy yet talented as seen in fuckload of series, the horses have to do a "winning concert" with dresses and shit after the race, and lot more.
But here the jokes are quite good, the animation is fluid and nice, the girls are bestgirls, the story doesnt seem much boring, and I like the ED.

That is a good thing. It keeps them from getting too close so content creators do not take them seriously. Also we knew this was coming when the uma musume project was announced a few years ago.

I would be just fine if every week was a double episode so we get a condensed 26 episode show in 13 weeks. Obviously this puts way more work on the studio and requires quite the budget and schedule to pull off. It would be better than a split cour if they couldn't get TV time to run a continuous 2 cour.

Kind of my thoughts. I felt like they'd either use the "your skirt was too tight from eating like a fatass country bumpkin even though you're not running like one, you couldn't run properly in it" excuse or her skirt would explode mid-race allowing her to win in her panties.
I'm gonna be extremely disappointed if one of these doesn't happen!

I'd actually love to know some more about the world. Did girls like this replace actual horses all throughout history? Did rural areas have horse girls pulling plows? Where there tournaments in medieval europe, which had heavily armord horsegirls bash each others with sticks? Did Nobunaga gun down the famous Takeda horse girl troups? Did Cowboys just walk through the desert all the time? Were there still horse girls in the military after warhorses fell out of use in our world?
I know, this isn't what this show is going to be about but I still wouldn't mind seeing some horse girl archery.

>Not "Did rural areas have Ban'ei races?"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ban%27ei
<The ban'ei course consists of a 200-metre (660 ft) dirt track with lanes separated by ropes laid in the sand. This creates ten lanes, each incorporating a starting gate and two hill-shaped obstacles. The second and steeper obstacle is called the Ban'ei Point. Horses haul sleds across this track, with the weight of each sled ranging from 450 kg (990 lb) to 1 ton

<A "super horse girl" with beautiful silver-gray hair and divine, distinguished beauty. But contrary to her appearance, her personality makes her a bit of an unfortunately ill-mannered bishoujo. She's coarse and brutal, with a violently sharp tongue, and her excessive tendency to leave her enemies in the dust highlights her intense personality. She doesn't even listen to a teacher's most basic instructions, and she won't take training or the race seriously if she doesn't feel like it; in which case, you'd have better luck talking to a wall. Her insolent glare has scared off countless teachers...... More on her grandfather, showing her expert lineage as a horse girl:
>Total earnings: Slightly less than $10,000,000USD (1,014,657,700JPY)
>Mejiro McQueen (Japanese : メジロマックイーン, April 3, 1987 - April 3, 2006) was a Japanese Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was a late-maturing horse who did not emerge as a top-class performer until the autumn of his three-year-old season when he won the Kikuka Sho. Over the next three years he proved himself one of the best stayers in Japan with wins in the Tenno Sho (twice), Takarazuka Kinen, Osaka Hai, Kyōto Daishōten (twice) and Hanshin Daishoten (twice). He won the JRA Award for Best Older Male Horse in 1991 and was inducted into the Japan Racing Association Hall of Fame shortly after his retirement from racing. He was not a great success as a breeding stallion.
>Mejiro McQueen did not race as a two-year-old but made a successful racecourse debut over 1700 metres on dirt in February 1990 at Hanshin Racecourse. He was beaten in his next three starts before taking two minor races at Hakodate Racecourse in September. On 4 November at Kyoto Racecourse he recorded his first major success in his last run of the year when he took the 3000 metre Kikuka Sho.
>On his first appearance as a four-year-old Mejiro McQueen won the Grade 2 Hanshin Daishoten at Chukyo Racecourse, setting a record time of 3:07.3 for the 3000 metre turf course. In April at Kyoto he took his second Grade 1 prize as he won the spring edition of the Tenno Sho over 3200 metres. When dropped in trip for the Takarazuka Kinen over 2200 metres in June he ran well again, but was beaten into second place by Mejiro Ryan. After the customary summer break he returned in October to win the Grade 2 Kyoto Daishoten and then finished first in the autumn Tenno Sho. In the latter race, however, he was disqualified and placed last of the eighteen runners: he had been drawn on the outside and hampered several horses when his jockey tracked over to the inside rail just after the start. He put up good efforts in defeat on his last two tarts that year, coming home fourth behind the American horse Golden Pheasant in the Japan Cup and finishing a close second to Dai Yusaku in the Arima Kinen. In the JRA Awards for 1991 he was voted the year's Best Older Male Horse.
>Meiro McQueen's 1992 campaign was restricted to two races, but he won them both. He began by taking the Hanshin Daishoten for the second successive year. On 26 April at Kyoto he followed up his 1991 success by winning the spring Tenno Sho for a second time. Injury problems kept the horse of the track for the rest of the year.
>After an absence of more than eleven months Mejiro McQueen returned in April 1993 and won the Grade 2 Osaka Hai at Hanshin in a record time of 2:03.2. His attempt to win an unprecedented third edition of the spring Tenno Sho narrowly failed as he finished second of the fifteen runners behind Rice Shower. On 13 June at Hanshin he won the Takarazuka Kinen at the second attempt to record his fourth Grade 1 success. He returned in October to win a second Kyoto Daishoten in a record time of 2:22.7 in what proved to be his final start.
>In 1994 Mejiro McQueen was inducted into the Japan Racing Association Hall of Fame.
>Mejiro McQueen was retired from racing to become a breeding stallion at Shadai Stallion Station. He was not a conspicuous success as a sire of winners, with the best of his offspring being the Grade 3 winners Time Fair Lady and Eidai Queen. He performed a valuable service at stud however, as he formed a close bond with Sunday Silence and acted as a calming influence on the hitherto obstreporous American stallion. Mejjiro McQueen's daughters did well as broodmares and he was the damsire of both Orfevre and Gold Ship. He died in 2006 at the age of nineteen.

>Haru Urara is a Japanese racehorse. The horse gained nationwide popularity in 2003, not due to her success, but rather, due to a long string of consecutive losses.
<This energetic horse girl has unending optimism and fighting spirit, despite having never won a single race. It’s pretty clear that her enrollment to Traincen Academy was an error, given that she doesn’t quite have the talent or skill, but everyone can’t get enough of her fun characteristic cheeriness that brightens up everyday life at the academy. Go for it! Fight for your first victory!
<Note: Haru Urara is named after a popular racehorse who became famous for being an underdog who never won a single race. Also, the reason the character is not wearing an idol outfit like the others is because one must win a race in order to become an idol.
>In June 2003, after garnering her 80th consecutive loss, the story was picked up by the national Japanese media, making "Haru Urara" a household name. She quickly became very popular in Japan, and was called "the shining star of losers everywhere" (負け組の星 makegumi no hoshi), for continuing to run with all her heart, despite her seemingly endless losing streak. This surge in popularity was dubbed "The Haru Urara Boom", and news about Haru Urara even reached the international community, being reported in the United States, Canada, Germany and elsewhere.
>During the boom, Haru Urara betting tickets began to be used as o-mamori, particularly for protection against traffic accidents: the word "ataranai" (当たらない) in Japanese can mean both "to lose a bet" and "to avoid being struck", so it was said that a Haru Urara betting ticket—a guaranteed loss—could protect the owner's car from being hit. In September 2003, the Kōchi Prefecture Horse Racing Association introduced a service wherein they would stamp the word on any betting ticket related to Haru Urara. O-mamori were also created from mane and tail hairs that were said to have fallen out during brushing, but production was soon halted, due to concerns expressed by animal welfare groups.
>At a race held on March 22, 2004, during the peak of her popularity, more than 13,000 spectators packed the Kochi Racetrack, 3,000 of whom had gathered outside before the gates opened, forcing the track to open 30 minutes earlier than scheduled. Some people waited in line for up to five hours to buy tickets at the "Haru Urara Commemorative Ticket Booth", which was established especially for the event. Fans bet a grand total of ¥121,751,200 on a Haru Urara victory, an impressive sum, particularly for a horse that had not won once in more than 100 attempts. The race ended in disappointment, but not surprise: despite being ridden by Japan's premier jockey, Yutaka Take, Haru Urara earned her 106th consecutive loss, placing 10th among 11 horses running.

Surprisingly Symboli Rudolf may not be involved in this giant incest scandal, or only very mildly. She HAS fucked the children of a shit ton of famous horses though, so there's a high chance that she's either directly or indirectly related to every single damn horse girl in the Academy, but she's not involved in their activities.
>Known as "Emperor" Symboli Rudolf is one of the leading horse daughters and serves as トレセン学園 student council president.
>She is known for her calm personality and her fairness. Despite her strict and resolute stance, she actually worries a lot and has a strong desire of protection.
Probably because half of them are her damn kids at the Academy.

I'm seriously starting to wonder how exact they're going to be in following these horses' careers. Take a look at this chart on Special Week's career. It's out of order, but as far as I can see:
>First race: Feb 1998, Special Week wins
>Second race: Mar 1998, Special Weeks wins, Seiun Sky second
>Third race: Apr 1998, Seiun Sky wins, Special Week only third
>Rival horses include Grass Wonder and El Condor Pasa
I haven't watched today's episode yet, so I don't know if it agrees as well.
There's 14 races listed here. It's entirely possible that this list is also a list of each race she runs in the show.

Ronnie's adventures with Uma Musume continue.
>Ronnie drove from farm to farm, casually grilling farmers about the possibility of horse girls being as real as his anime. Miraculously, one farmer entertained his idea and showed him their own concepts of horse girls. The crude drawings depicted a woman's body but with the entire head of a horse. The tragic incompatibility of their ideals left Ronnie more dejected than the seven previous farmers who wielded weapons in protest.

It never struck me that he was particularly interested in anime, since the references could just as well have been currently airing if he was actively interested in anime, or older series if he was invested in anime some time before but wasn't currently, but instead it was just stuff that 'I've watched 20 whole anime in my lifetime' type folks would recognise and normal people wouldn't really care about either way.

Made ripples throughout Europe, I think the source was traced back to Spain or something? It wasn't really accidental, some supplier was just selling meat under a false label, I can't imagine horse meat being cheaper though, so their reasons are unclear to me.
In any case, yes, that raised a huge stink and I can't imagine horse meat being sold in western europe for the foreseeable future.

Horses aren't very intelligent and basically exist to suffer. Why is it such a taboo to eat their flesh?
I mean, I understand dogs, cats, dolphins and whales for their comparative intelligence and/or ability to bond with humans. Alternatively eating endangered species is shortsighted and pushes them to extinction, which is understandable. So why are horses such and issue? I'm pretty sure there's only one endangered species of horse, Prezalwsky's horse or something like that? Is there a health issue associated with eating horse? I really don't understand.

I see you've never raced before.
I agree that the end result is pretty simple, but there's a lot of preparation to get to it, and long races have a lot of variables the racers have to think of, like maintaining pace, when to sprint, how to pass someone, curves, how to not let someone pass you while not overexerting yourself, and in this anime there's even an uphill.
I also think team sports are more interesting in the end, but this type of thing about pushing limits is pretty cool too.
Now powerlifting, there's a sport which I think is the pinnacle of simplicity.

I am aware of this. But the races go for only a couple of minutes at most in this, and despite the anime spending most of its time on training and internal monologues, we don't usually see them considering this sort of thing. It's all just "I need to run faster" or "woah that girl is so fast".
In the most recent episode they were using the slipstream technique in the first part of the race, but there has never been a "it's early in the race so I'll just jog for a while" or "it's the end of the race, I need to go as fast as I can now".
