I believe the anime is probably one of the only things that was better when a manga was brought to life. The voice actors who do it are perfect and make the characters who they are more so than the ink. The way the anime does the pacing and the music made for it turns this into something more than it should have ever been. Its the one time where I believe its better than the manga just because it takes what the books are and pumps even more insanity to it.

Its just too perfect.

I wish. I had a good chance to be one but avoided it for years. Multiple people suggested it to me, back when the anime started. I got halfway through episode 1 and dropped it. All I remember is that the MC bitched about how he should stop reading Jump.

I recently got me some batches and I might start watching it soon.

Watched the first 13 or 15 episodes. At best it gave me a few light chuckles, but certainly didn't make me laugh or keep me entertained.

I heard Sugita was the main character and then I ended up watching every episode without really noticing. I mean you probably end up wasting several weeks going to the toilet over the years but it's not like you really need to justify it to yourself.

I don't think you need a very high IQ to appreciate gintama, but anyone who uses MAL to rate anime has some problems regardless of their tastes. Frankly even using it just to keep track of what you've watched is kind of a strange thing to do if you ask me.

Recently picked it up since I'm at a loss for things to watch that pique my interest. I'm at episode 5 and it's alright, somewhat funny but not laugh out loud funny like Golden Boy was. I don't get why it's so highly rated (though I'll admit I've still got a lot to see before I can have an actual opinion on it) but so far its not total trash like some people here are suggesting. I think a problem with comedic shows is that people take them too seriously rather than remembering that these shows are more to laugh at than to critically analyze. It's entertaining, and that's good enough for me.

Same here, I watched the first 24 episodes waiting for it to get funny but it just never happened, which is odd considering I came into it with really high hopes. I saw the MAL rating and how 7 out of the 15 top shows were Gintama seasons and thought it was the second coming of anime christ, but all I watched was was anime Family Guy. So obviously I thought I didn't think I got to the funny part yet and watched three or four of the "Top Gintama funny moments #47" videos and didn't laugh once. Does it ever graduate from poo jokes and funny faces or does it stay like that for the whole show? If so why is it rated 9.17 on MAL?

I watched 24 episodes of it, and it has an incredible amount of similarity to Family guy. Just because I didn't want to watch Gin get food shoved up his ass or someones boner used as a surfboard for 350 episodes doesn't mean i'm not patient it means that this show isn't marketed towards me. All of the youtube videos have full context of the jokes, and if you mean the characters personalities than thats even funnier since when it comes to the slapstick stuff they write, it wouldn't even matter that I got 24 episodes to get a grasp of their personalities since they're really one dimensional anyways.

I'm going to blow your mind here for a second but... Comedy shows are reliant on their comedy. If both shows use fart jokes, shock humor, and easy comedy like that its called crude/slapstick. If the entire reason the shows are made is based around crude/slapstick humor then they are very similar. But by all means please keep watching it if you find it funny. I don't make fun of people who watch family guy so why would I make fun of you, just trying to understand the appeal for people older than 15.

I disagree, Gintama is good. I'm not going to explain why is it good, because you won't agree with me, making any points of arguing pointless. But I will say this, it's the viewer that will decide what is garbage or not, not a random third party. Another anon here. Just want to say that it really is hard to try to explain why comedy, in any fashion works, since the moment you have to explain a joke it stops being funny. I will say again one of its strength is its longevity as to why its even popular. People remember it fondly because its been around long enough for people to remember it fondly. Self fulfilling I know. That being said I remember Gintama episode 121 - 123 The "Monkey Hunter Arc", since apparently Ginama' with a ' is actually considered a different series. in some places, I personally thought had a few good setup jokes that stuck with me all these years. I don't even think they where the best jokes in the series, but it stuck in my head for a while.

This show revels is its low brow humor, and its closer to say it you don't enjoy things like Dr. Slum, or Go Nagai style of humor, you might not like this series. It shouldn't come a surprised that a "weekly" show with 300+ episodes doesn't hold such high standards. This is Jump after all.

Thanks for the level headed response. I suppose more so than explaining a specific joke persay, just how what might be called "low brow" humor can stay funny for Gintama fans over 300~ episodes. As I said I watched the first 24 episodes and found it repetitive, but i'll concede that a lot of my dislike for Gintama is that it rated so high across the board. The show doesn't stand out for my but people seem to like it more than shows like LotGH or NGE, etc.

Family guy isnt that fluid when it comes to comedy. It like other western shows require a set up and then a shitty punch line. They forget the basic elements of how to make a joke.

Instead most things especially family guy dont even bother with the middle and skip right to the third step. Cutaway gags are really shitty because they are never done right. With Gintama the entire joke is built upon another and it just flows one after another, like the original simpsons used to do but at a slower pace. I find Gintama amazing because it can constantly go from joke to joke to joke and then turn around and run a super serious arc and then flow back into comedy without people going "That was odd". The jokes are never really out of place due to how well they crafted the characters. I just believe that Gintama is a better show because of how it was created. You will never have anything that will appeal to 100% of an audience when that audience isnt from a specific group and even then you might not get the 100%. So if we take a sample from this board thats makeup is from many backgrounds honestly its not going to be funny to some. But I doubt you can call this a bad show or an unfunny show given the ratio of people who do find it funny. I believe its witty, charismatic and does things properly by doing jokes that play off the character's personalities that were crafted very well instead of taking the easy way and just dropping jokes like an amateur standup routine or cutaway gags or appealing to shitty genres like the big bang theory. It works well because of the entire worldbuilding and character building and uses that to make the jokes instead of it being like the current simpsons where each one is a bland zombie that get thrown into situations that normally wouldnt happen in their life. However we can surmise that weird shit can happen in Gintama's life constantly because of how the world was built and their characters. We can see that Gintama might cause a prison to drastically change and help the warden. We can see that he would get into a dispute between the underworld lords. The world was built for many different things for gintama and its easier to say "that could happen" instead of the simpsons where we are wondering how a shitty family of unimportant retards can meet, greenday, multiple presidents, offend entire countries, foil massive crimes repeatedly ect ect. A good lesson that the zombies never remembered is that a good story never has good things happen by chance. Its usually the opposite. The only things that happen by chance should be bad ones more than the good otherwise it just seems like god itself is dropping blessings unto the main character and no one wants to read or watch about a group that gets to do a billion different things that usually would never happen because their world was set up in a way that drastically resembles ours.

If you're going to relate comedy to other comedy purely by the matter of its content then yes you are saying they're the same. Just because slapstick in the 20s isn't the same as slapstick in 2010 doesn't make it not slapstick. If you were going to make the argument that gintama is the same as family guy because of the execution of the jokes that would be different, but as it is you're just saying that aeroplanes and bird are identical beacuse they both go in the sky.

Does Otae ever get better? Nothing bad ever happens to her despite being a bitch in every scene she's in. I'm over 80 episodes in, but she still manages to ruin my enjoyment every time the focus shifts to her.
