Welcome to the Sund/a/y /jp/Cinema Club!
This thread is for discussion of all things related to Japanese films. Let's explore and discover this underrepresented part of Nip culture.
What movies have you watched and which are your favorites? What directors or actors do you enjoy? Got anything on your backlog?
I'm hoping we could use this thread for 2D as well since there are so many good movies we never get to talk about because they don't warrant their own thread.
If you've never watched a Japanese movie before and are hesitant to do so because you swore off 3D films for good - you're in for a treat.
There is scenery and visuals of such beauty they will make your eyes water. There's the Jap humor, there's cool action scenes and there's endearing stories. Most importantly, it will compliment your anime and manga in giving you another piece of intimate understanding about something you love. All wrapped up in a clean package free of westernshit cancer.
>But with so much content available out there, where do I start?
How about starting with the master of masters, director Akira Kurosawa?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_creative_works_by_Akira_Kurosawa
Take your pick. Every one is worth watching, I myself hope to one day finish them all. Or just start with Yojimbo, since it's a well-known and great movie.
Another director who also acts in most of his movies, and a personal favorite of mine is Takeshi Kitano. You've never seen yakuza done like this guy does them.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takeshi_Kitano#Filmography
Movies like Hanabi, Kikujiro, Violent Cop, Boiling Point. I can't recommend them enough. Just like with Kurosawa, everything this guy makes is amazing and worth watching.

No.796580
Oh and I guess I should mention how I go about finding them since these types of movies - as well as the translations - tend to be unreliable and harder to find than animu.
I use the https://torrentz2.eu search engine which covers most public trackers as far as I'm aware. Most results still come from piratebay usually. Since I haven't torrented Nip films in a long time I am not aware of any better alternatives, yet.
There's a good chance rutracker may have a nice selection because I found a few by doing some quick searching but I can't confirm.
>>796576
I don't know anything about that movie, anon.
But I can think of two others that are in the same twilight zone. The upcoming Wes Anderson movie "Isle of Dogs" comes to mind for one.
And then there's Shogun 547 min. mini-series which I think any anon should see if they haven't already. Done by the brits and filmed in Nihon with attention to authenticity.

Yeah he's pretty chill, we constantly share movies and music with each other, we've even watched Cowboy Bebop together and he enjoyed it a lot since it's manly enough and has jazz music which he loves. He Doesn't care much for anime in general though.
Also if you haven't watched it yet there's a semi-biographical film about Mishima called Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters. It's an American film but the dialogues are in Japanese with an English voice over talking briefly at certain points of the movie. It also features music by Philip Glass which was cool to me.
Finally thanks for taking into consideration my recommendations and I really hope you enjoy All About Lily Chou-Chou, it's probably my favorite out of the bunch.

I'm a huge fan of the film and Mishima himself but holy shit, tracking this movie down is a fucking pain in the ass. The Criterion release DVDs are all like $25+ and there's no way I'm paying a reseller that much for it. You can find an exceptionally shitty version on public trackers but finding a digital copy of the Ken Ogata-narrated version is a royal pain in the ass. To put together a decent quality version of it, I had to:
>track down a DVD rip on a shady Russian tracker
>find the only original audio track (they butchered it with Russian dubs and subs) which was fortunately the Ogata version
>merge the VOB files
>convert them to mkv
>track down sub files, which while not hard if you know where to look, are conspicuously absent from Google searches for this movie specifically
>retime them to fit this version
>bundle them into a track on the mkv
And then I found out there was a Blu-ray release.

How about some Ninja movies? I once asked the owned of Vintage Ninja to share his favorites and this is what he had to say:
>CASTLE OF OWLS (1963) is my absolute favorite of any era, any country.
>SAMURAI SPY (1965) is the apex of artistic achievement in ninja movies.
>MISSION IRON CASTLE (1970) is my favorite of the SHINOBI NO MONO films.
>IGA NINPOCHO (aka NINJA WARS) is one of the weirdest of the genre ever.
>17 NINJA, THE THIRD NINJA, THE NINJA HUNT, and any of the YAGYU SECRET SCROLLS movies are also great.
>I'm a huge fan of the Show Bros. 5 ELEMENT NINJA and HEROES OF THE EAST, on a totally different track.
>As for American stuff, I'm all about THE OCTAGON and REVENGE OF THE NINJA.
>Also, the Japanese TV show ONMITSU KENSHIN, dubbed as THE SAMURAI for Australian TV is the most ninja-packed TV show ever.

Mishima was a fantastic movie. I ended up watching the hardsubbed version off TPB which wasn't actually as terrible as I expected, and A/V were good. Furthermore, the copy I found is the Ogata-narrated version.
Nice insights into the man's mind. His views on beauty and death were inspiring and I think it quelled some of my existential dread. It's really cool how they did the segments of Mishima's novels and how clear it was that he poured himself into each of them when writing.

I can't believe I sat through all 9 hours and 47 minutes of that shit, but I did it. Much like how the thought of returning to Michiko kept Kaji going, the thought of bitching about this blatant communist propaganda film kept me from closing MPV.
9 ours and 47 minutes of watching a humanist, individualist, libertarian and all-around nice guy Kaji turn into a full blown Che Guevara look-alike, commie.
I found it rather tasteless how much the movie shat on Imperial Japan, and Nihonjin in general, while the Ruskies were portrayed as highly civilized and moral people. Hard to believe this filth came out of Japan, but easy to understand why western critics "praise" it.
It wasn't all bad though. Some characters were quite memorable and every now and then the scenary would impress.

Today's double feature will be Invasion of Astro-Monster, featuring Godzilla, Rodan, and King Ghidorah, and Drunken Angel, Kurosawa's first film with Toshiro Mifune. This is also one of his contemporary crime dramas so if you've only seen his jidai-geki this movie is something to look forward too. We will be starting slightly later than usual to try out a new time so the stream will be at 6:00 EST not the usual time. We are also going to reverse the usual order of the double feature with the lighter movie first and the more serious movie second. As usual, the movie starts about five minutes after the time above, so 6:05, and there will be a ten minute intermission in between the two movies. Total runtime for today will be 3 hours so we will wrap up at 9:00 as usual. I hope to see you there.

Time for another Sunday movie stream. Since we finished the last of the Showa era Godzilla movies last week, we'll be moving on into the Heisei era with Godzilla (1984). This is essentially a reboot but not quite, you'll see once we start watching it. The whole Heisei era has a sort of over-arching storyline that begins with the movie after this as well, so we'll be watching these movies in order. Following Godzilla will be a Kurosawa film, Rashomon, a great classic that first made Kurosawa known internationally. Total runtime should be 3 and a half hours since Godzilla is slightly longer than usual. As usual, 10 minute intermission between the movies. Stream will be up at ~5:30 and the movies will start shortly after 6:00EST.

Sorry for posting this so late in the day. Because of the issues we ran into last week, I decided to use today as a test and try cytube instead of streamchan. The advantage of this is if my internet fucks up again it will only affect me not everyone else. This should also keep the films from skipping at certain points. The software is much more robust as well so we won't have to worry about the chat breaking and hopefully those anons who had problems with blank screens will be able to watch. Movies are the same as last week. Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah is on now and will be played again right after it (to test Drive vs. Youtube) and will then be followed by Samurai Wars. In order to watch videos being streamed from Google Drive you need to install this userscript (https://cytu.be/js/cytube-google-drive.user.js) but Youtube works normally.
