How come there's not enough manga and anime with suffering? There really needs to be more. Characters exist just to be ground down into the dirt, especially main characters.

>How come there's not enough manga and anime with suffering?

Because it's more fun and relaxing as a writer or artist to draw comfy scenes unless you have past traumas or are being edgy.

>How come there's not enough manga and anime with suffering?

I can understand there not being enough anime with suffering. But manga?

There are more than enough manga with suffering.

Exactly. I don't think "feel bad" manga's are as rare as you think OP.

Isn't modern life already as sad and soul crushing as it gets? Why pursue it further in your escapism medium (manga), and for the sake of it only?

Some people like to feel pain because pain is the only thing they have left to feel.

It's supply and demand, man. First-world culture got super fucking edgy in the nineties after the end of the cold war, but after 9/11 sent us into an endless shit spiral, people have been yearning more and more for the sweet comfort of moe.

First aid.

Brace yourself for faggotposting:

I like the way it feels. I can't usually feel many strong emotions, and my emotional landscape is about as bleak as Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou.

Although comfy moe SOLs and romcoms are some of my favorite sub-genres, nothing beats the intense emotionally response I get from seeing deep suffering. It's relatable and just about the only thing that can make me cry anymore.

The weak, when faced with the loss of their souls, seek out ever more intense forms of pain and suffering because those are the things that make them FEEL again -- they are biologically wired deeper than other emotions, they are based on raw animal survival. The enlightened, when faced with the loss of their souls, recognize that pain and suffering are bad and relinquish their own desires for FEELS for the betterment of the world that already has too much pain and suffering already.

Of course the real question is, why is everybody losing their souls?

>why is everybody losing their souls?

Ignorance and apathy, mostly.

What life and these media have in common isn't the flavour of the suffering, rather the need for genuine connections between you and other people is at the root of both sensations. The soul-crushing aspects of modern life are often due to an absence of those connections, while suffering in media is most effective when there is a feeling of a genuine connection between you and the character it happens to, and can deepen the feelings on top of that.

Boy do you ever sound like you're full of shit.

Fuck you, dude. I don't want to be some kind of golemn roaming the earth. That's no soul, that's no life. I'll take my deeply-aged nostalgia and melancholy over your proposed prozac-"enlightenment."
