Will trigger do the Sonic Adventure 2 ending thing AGAIN for this one? Honestly it wouldn't be hard, I was surprised they managed to pull it off in LWA, so I won't doubt them again.

I was pretty underwhelmed by the first episode. The art is good and the mecha fights are nicely reminiscent of Gurren Lagann, but the characters and their interactions are extremely uninspired, generic shounen material so far. I'll probably watch a few more to see if it gets better.

The mecha and especially enemy designs were cool in my eyes, but holy shit that script. Specifically Zero Two, what a horribly retarded character. She's a bitch but not in a believable or cute way like Asuka, she licks the MC and talks about how he tastes. I don't care if she devours the blood of her copilot or whatever, this is retarded behavior. She feels less like a character than the embodiment of some weird otaku's femdom fetish. All that could have been forgiven if MC had just punched her, but instead being the beta cuck that he naturally is, he falls in love with her. Which is actually kind of believable, and if this series were setting him up for heartbreak ala FLCL then I might see this working, but somehow I doubt they're going there. The most I hope for is that Zero Two ends up going super dere on him and he mans up by the end of the series, but I don't see them going in that direction with this either, alas.

I didn't think she acted like a bitch at all. I think she was alright, slightly rebellious with the military people who drag her around but that's about it. All in all she treated the MC pretty well, much better than I expected.

They're doing the "she's part monster" thing here if you didn't notice, hence the licking. It might be a fetish thing but it wasn't a big focus or a long scene or anything, and I've definitely seen dumber reasons for licking in mango and animu, like in Vento Aureo.

As for the rest of your post about the MC, they could absolutely go for the manning up route. We don't know if he's a Shinji or a Simon yet, I wouldn't jump to conclusions.

I think you're jumping to a lot of conclusions based on nothing. I'm as tired as anyone else of the beta type MC, but at this point I've more or less learned to live with it, and hope he gets better eventually.

A terrible first episode. It does that thing where they just throw around a bunch of stupid terms without context and pretend it's deep. It's unfortunately rather common in Japanese storytelling. They're just jerking themselves off by acting like not telling the viewer what's going on makes it complex. It should be used to show the viewer what the universe is like, not just "tee hee you don't know what this means so it's just a bunch of nonsense without context, better watch more episodes". Other stuff worth noting:

>Main character is the main character. The same incredibly generic, cloned anime main character as every other main character in the last decade.

>Teenager drama. Now from people you don't know a single fucking thing about. Why would the viewer give the slightest damn about that one girl screaming and crying? Still, what kind of man would willing be her partner and just die when he could either be with his partner or go out and get a real partner instead of 02?

If they actually had writers in Japan, they would have realized if they had just written 02 need simething like a dummy partner thing (which they had to create out of a man, reminiscent to best dad's works) they could have kept the rumor, added a sense to how lonely 02 was, and kept how disturbing and demonic her piloting had to be until she found MC.

02 most likely never gets any kind of say in her partner usually. They are simply assigned to her, possibly because, due to her Klaxosaur nature, she may be able to synch with anyone. But that takes a toll on her partner. And if it is as intimate and what not as we suspect then she can't be happy with being paired up with people in such a manner either. So she has the feelings of being a tool that's alone and used.

I'm pretty sure her other partners have all been hardline military personnel and hate Klaxasaurs. They see partnering with her as a necessary evil and don't care for her. So of course she's not going to get along with anyone that doesn't like her on a fundamental level.

It feels clear that for whatever reason Hiro will be "compatible" to the point of not suffering harm. Zerotwo is kept on a leash by her handlers and is probably pretty clearly assigned pilot partners based on "measured" compatibility as opposed to "true" compatibility. Like a parallel with arranged marriage versus marriage for love. Arranged out of necessity and pragmatic need. Hiro will probably have some troubles and not be up to par of the "better" choices who go into it knowing they're going to be eaten alive in the cockpit over time. Or, at worst, he will suffer harm over time as well but endure it because of the whole "DUDE LOVE/marriage/pistil and stamen/mating" dynamic. Or she'll endure not destroying him.

If anything you are the one in denial, because your reaction to someone saying "this character is either a bad person or the writers fucked up" is to claim that they want NTR. I don't get the feeling that the show is marriage propoganda. If you look at some of the things 002 says, (build your own place, find your own partner) her being able to (briefly, at least) pilot a mech on her own and that being seen to be monstrous, vile, and mistaken for a monster, the society of the series being seen as questionable or even a dystopia... Trigger/GAINAX is a lot of things, but it's not subtle. They like SYMBOLISM in all caps. So they start us off with questioning whether this system works and all that.

No, I was thinking to myself during both episodes how different the show would be if it used older or more adult characters in place of kids. Stuff like how deep they will really go into maintaining a relationship with your partner, and how far they will take the analogy to sex. I think this would definitely change unless you also write it into the story that for some reason 20+ yo people have had no physical intimacy in their lives with anyone and completely missed out on puberty. Also it brings up the question of whether or not any older pilots would have had any prior relationships or current ones with people other than their mech partner.

I don't know how the show is going to play stuff out, but given what I've seen in the past I definitely think they are going to wind up "pulling their punches" with some of the more obvious themes regarding sex and intimacy. I am prepared to be wrong but I doubt it. I feel like more time is going to be spent having kids realize stuff about boners than anything else.
