The best fanservice is the one that focuses on something more high-level than your typical boobs or ass, and doesn't draw too much attention to it. It's just quietly there to be appreciated by those with good enough taste.

Show a glimpse of something normally covered up and give it enough detail, and it acts as the most effective fanservice. I wish I had some examples on hand but I don't.

Hairstyle changes. Not the silly and pointless ones like seaweed (gamers) and hitagi (*monogatari). The rare day that a character changes hairstyle just to look different is really enjoyable. Annehappy had hairstyle service just for the sake of hairstyle service and it was great.

Subtle mid-thigh to lower ass is preferred.

Of course, I'm willing to appreciate anything that is creatively presented.

Anime fanservice is the anime version of a reach around.

If the ass fucking you're getting isn't any good a reach around won't make it good, but if you're getting the sodomization you want the reach around makes it all the better.

That analogy doesn't work. You can't have a true prostate orgasm if your dick is getting stimulated, but those are difficult to achieve and the temptation to resort to your dick is strong. A reach-around is cheap gratification for those who lack patience or self-control, with inferior long-term payoff. The comparison would actually work far better if you were trying to claim fanservice was a cheap crutch used to get people to pay attention to series that lack genuine appeal.

I dislike fan-service that goes against the tone of a scene. Nothing pisses me off more then a dramatic moment or reveal being ruined because I was supposed to focus on anime tits at the same time. That's part of the reason I skipped out on fairy tale.

For me to tolerate fanservice, it either needs to be tonally consistent, or get straight to ecchi level with nips and all. If your gonna ruin your own pacing with fanservice, being all coy and tone the sexuality down just makes your anime shit to watch and shit to wank at.

I think less is more. Those little flashes of panty or that half-second nipple slip feel more like pleasant treats than a full on panty shot. Then later on maybe the shower scene or something later in the series as a "Hey thanks for watching, here's a little something." Basically I like subtlety. Unless it's in regards to outfits. Then give me some well-crafted sex appeal, lovingly rendered cleavage and ass. I'm one of those types that thinks scantily clad is lewder than full on nudity.

I have to disagree, if well made, you can have perfectly integrated pornography.

I love Bakemonogatari, because even if fanservice is big part of the series, it doesnt revolve around it. Like others anons have said before in this thread, it shouldnt interrupt the plot nor be there for no complete reason.

Yeah I have to admit that one has more than what the average of the series already has, with some of them being excesive.
