Life expectancy is often a misleading statistic driven by outliers because it's mean and not median, but the outliers usually in the other direction - reduction of infant mortality rates are the biggest upward driver of life expectancy.
The graph I included is numbers of female deaths by age in the UK (I think). As you can see, while they'd say their "life expectancy" is 79, the median age is 82 and the mode is 86. It's probably even higher in Japan.
