Only one more episode left. I am still waiting for episode 11 to get subbed and put up on the lousy public trackers I use. I said a few threads back that there are two ways they can end it; they can end it in a very dark and depressing way, or, more fittingly, they can end it exactly where they started it. In the middle of nowhere, for no reason. I think the second is more fitting because of the overall themes, but reading through tkmiz's twitter, I am lead to believe that (s)he has a taste for the tragic.

So cat is in the OP now.

What the fuck is that cat thing anyways? It can eat bullets, can provide electrical power, manipulate electro magnetic signals and is essentially a mega tool. Is it some sort of semi-biological robot, that can run on any chemical fuel, or some kind of mutated beast that evolved from massive radiation?

Now we know that Chi is officially scared of the cat and Yuu, how would a final showdown turn out? Yuu so far has never attacked Chi deliberately (the moon light scene was just a temporary madness), but she did use the rifle as a means to gain food. Chi however has punched Yuu many times, not just in the stomach. The cat is getting bigger the more ammo it consumes, so what if it gets it's hands on a nuclear missile, or even the reactor?

Is the cat actually ediable? What if there is not enough food for Yuu and Chi? Could they even kill the cat, or would it somehow fight back? Could the cat eat Yuu and Chi if food (ammo and fuel) runs out?

Also: the cat choking on the 20mm was lewd.

Its the harbinger of the end. The amount of dangerous stuff thats happened to the girls since this thing showed up has increased dramatically. In cute SoL shows this is where the new character gets inserted to "liven things up" except here its a nuko and it brings danger wherever it goes. I fear the the girls will discover a prison at some point and that thing will activate the torture chamber or something

It's controlled with control rods which are used to absorb neutrons, by product of nuclear fission. And neutrons are also needed for nuclear fission which occurs in those fuel rods. So by lowering or raising control rods placed around fuel rods you can control the rate of which nuclear fission occurs.

>>770142

It just occurred me that since clearly weapons of mass destruction are not off the book in SSR-world, the vast majority of people probably ended up dying due to usage of biological weapons. And those weaponized germs can last dormant for years. Since some of the books haven't decayed, it seems to me that it wasn't that many years ago that the war ended, or biological weapons were possibly used. This leads to a possibility that Chi and Yuu, depending on how depressed author gets and if the manga hasn't ended already, will die off of bloody anthrax or some other fun bug they got by walking on some road somewhere.

Which means lots of starch and sugars. Soldiers need energy, they already got most of the muscle they need. Only little protein is needed to sustain muscle mass.

Sure, most modern MRE packages contain some meat, but it appears to me, that the ration bars they had didn't. Besides the soup (which could have contained only very little protein inside the broth) they literally only had one fish and potatos for a year now, unless they found some other meat based food, or something similar to soy beans.

It could work, but it still doesn't make that much sense.

Was it mentioned that the bodies were actually in the graves when Yuu looked in there? Cremation is common in Japan so the graves could have just been ashes. In the event biological weapons are used, its pretty typical today to burn the bodies to prevent spread of the disease via ground water. I can see a bot whose sole purpose it is to find dead bodies, scoop them up, cremate on the way to a grave, dump the ashes in a box, and stamp a label on the box.

Depends on the kind of ration. The only animal products you'll see in emergency survival rations are beef bouillon cubes, and only because they fit the compact, high calorie, long shelf life, non-thirst-provoking, and edible without water niches needed for them.

In day-to-day field rations, high protein dishes are included primarily for promoting fullness. It's a low fiber meal since you don't want soldiers to be shitting in the field if they can help it, and they might not have access to lots of water to fill their stomach, so protein is the only guarantee they'll feel full after a meal.

Rations that contain bars are usually assault food packets or survival rations. Maybe the people didn't have access to a lot of proteins to they focused their ration manufacturing on carbs and starch.

>they already got most of the muscle they need

Combat arms training is designed that it destroys your body. You lose muscle in Basic, you lose muscle in battle school. By the time recruits finish their training they could lose up to 20lb of muscle. Its insane. And that's only the basic training to do your job, if you want marine sniper master chief seal ranger X!1337X then that training is even tougher and you lose even more body mass. So any bodymass you actually gain is usually on your own time when you can regulate your protein intake and sleep, and then you lose it when you get deployed or go through some rough training.

>only little protein is needed to sustain muscle mass

Without discussing any numbers, let me say people on the field aren't sustaining muscle, they're destroying their bodies going through week long patrols without sleep. And here's another thing they're only eating what they're carrying with them, so those MRE packs are stripped down, some of it thrown out to make it the load lighter. So pretty much starving in the field. Also MRE packs aren't as high energy as one would think, the main meal is usually composed of 250 calories, which is pathetic.

As Kanazawa rode up the tower after the monumental task of mapping the previous level, he lost his entire life's work, but he moved forward, began mapping the next level, and kept living. Ishii's dreams literally fell apart when her moment of triumph seemed certain, but she did not die. The girls have lost their kettenkrad, their rifle, even the diary, absolutely everything they hold dear but each other, but that doesn't mean they can't carry on.

If you look at the Kanazawa chapter again, note the role of the streetlights. I think it might not be coincidence for the girls to also encounter a light like that in their (both literal and figurative) darkest moment. Also, note the conversation they had earlier in that very chapter about Yuu's memory, or feeling of a memory, of being in the womb. It is very easy to interpret the last couple chapters, culminating in the climb, as a metaphorical rebirth.

Though I think more likely is that we'll get the "life is something that ends" sentiment that we've seen with the robots and the AI, and the city itself. A sort of "Shogyou Mujou" type ending, though I might be completely misusing the term.

Is there anyone who can clarify the exact translation of the title? The official English translation of "Last Tour" seems to clearly imply the death end, but if the fan translation of "Apocalypse Adventure" is closer then death isn't as strongly suggested.

I would actually consider that a major plot point.

Yuu not only kept her finger off the trigger in the original, she did so in a very obvious manner. She wanted Chi to notice that she did, that there was no intention of ever shooting the rifle.

In the animu you can even hear Yuu repeating the rifle, presumably chambering a round. It is clear that she could have shot Chi, wether or not that was her intent.

Aimu: she could have actually killed Chi, even unintentionally.

Mango: Made it clear that she doesn't want to kill Chi

I have no audio editor, or I would have tried to add the static.

I tried cranking the bitrate down to a fairly ridiculous level (18k, down from the normal version's 160k) to see if real artifacting could sound like the radio, but it's not the same, and that method obviously can't add the extra crackles anyway.

She isn't ejecting the full cartridge in either of those shot, just the empty casing, it's a perspective error when rendering the empty space left by the bullet.

The cartridge drawing has four clearly distinctive parts the bottom (1), the body (2), the tampering (3), the neck (4).

The fifth part (5) is added to simulate the 3D emptiness of the cartridge in 2D but the angles aren't exactly right so it looks weird.

This is loosely based on the idea that fungi tend to absorb radiation faster than other life. Some even convert it to energy. (examples found in Chernobyl)

The fact that there was a temple dedicated to these things make me think that They where engineered to clean up the nuclear fallout that was left behind. Chances are that included the dead who worked on the project that where entombed in those isles, hence why a lot of them where empty.

Perhaps the stone statues left around the city are dead mushrooms, petrified after fulfilling its life cycle.

Even though I read the manga this episode still left me speechless, the scene with Moonlight Sonata in specific. I've been saving all the specials for the this to take the edge off. I think I'll have to get a physical copy too.

There is enough content for a second season but if by "better" you mean happy then no, it gets worse. Still worth reading though.

That was really one of the best endings of any anime I've ever seen, everything about it was so perfect I just loved it. The feelings of hopelessness at the end of humanity but the fact that Yuu and Chi still have each other, it's just great. Time to read the manga now

>>772482

>Perhaps the stone statues left around the city are dead mushrooms, petrified after fulfilling its life cycle.

I don't think so, I think that if they were engineered to clean up the planet the remaining people saw them as saviours and purifiers at them purifying the irradiated planet. I actually feel as if the mushrooms are part of the reason that humanity is completely doomed if they're eating all tech and "thermally unstable" material. It seems they're eating anything combustible so that means one of the basics of human life are being consumed by the shrooms

That was more depressing than I expected from the manga.

The manga translation I read had the mushroom's line about them being the only humans left as the far less absolute "we don't know if other humans exist apart from you two" though it's very possible that that's a translation error, since the group doing it wasn't great. But either way there were no cuts back to things like the fishtank.

Also absent from the manga as far as I saw was most of the sequence with the pre-collapse recordings. The chapter had the videos of the schoolgirls, and of the couple with the baby, but none of the other stuff, particularly the collapse itself.

And the memory of Gramps was also a later chapter that got moved here. All in all the episode had a much different tone than I expected.

That is actually a more accurate translation. The anime subs aren't very good.

What they actually say in a more literal translation is something like

>Aside from the uppermost level, we have surveyed most places; currently, you two are the only humans we know of.

 No.772612

>>772604

Realistically speaking, I don't see their surveys being likely to find many people at all. The girls found them, not the other way around, and they'd never seen even a trace of the mushrooms before that. The biggest issue is that people move around. They could scrutinize each layer as closely as they like but something like Ishii's fall would still be almost certain to get overlooked, and even moving by land as the girls or Kanazawa did could easily stymie the shrooms' search.

Honestly, I think I prefer the manga over this episode. The manga certainly does get as depressing, and even moreso, but it's a different kind of depressing, more tightly focused on the characters.

The shrooms not having surveyed the top layer was pretty clear foreshadowing, one way or another. Though it could end with the two of them accidentally blowing up the top layer.

Despite it all I think this is a relatively positive work and will have at least a somewhat happy end; both Ishii and Kanazawa could've been killed for muh dramatic effect, and yet they both survived as far as we know, plus the two of them consistently escaped all danger unscathed.

Let see I understand the timeline.

First: Japan had declared war against their neighbors. (WW3 with high tech)

The destruction of new weapons made they construct cities in layers. (the air raids part).

After that, some country(probably Japan) had changed government or flag. (and had killed 50 million).

Second: we had the introduction of robots in society and table field.

Third: Electromagnetic bombs probably had destroyed most of the robots and modern infrastructure.

Forth: Nukes and electromagnetic bombs between most of cities and layers.

Fifth: Even after fuck up with everything, humanity still fight with no electronics weapons.

And now the mushroom people are cleaning the plane to mess humanity did?

 No.772930

>>772927

I think the evolving robots and layered cities came before the war. Since we see a middle school club tinkering with them, that's probably conveying that the robots are a fairly common and established technology by that point, and what they were likely used for was building and maintaining the layered cities since that's what we see them doing even now. I'm assuming it got to a point where society became completely dependent on the robots to function, so once the war broke out the most destructive weapon people could use against each other would be one that disrupts the machines.

 No.772931

>>772927

>mushroom people

I don't think they are mushroom people. The flashback video showed a bot capable of essentially evolution. I think the mushrooms are one "species" of bot that sought to survive the war. It eventually became independent of electricity and uses mankind's weapons as food. Perfect creatures to survive the end of the world brought about by war.

 No.772932

>>772930

Still, how did the surviving population die? From hunger? Exposure? Radiation does not seem to be a problem.

 No.772934

>>772932

Maybe they didn't. Maybe they all moved to the upper level, or maybe the city we see is just one city that faced too much destruction from conventional weapons that it was just abandoned but there's life in other cities.

 No.772936

>>772931

>Perfect creatures to survive the end of the world brought about by war.

Still, unless they can derive energy from alternative sources like solar power, you think they're bound to hit the Malthusian limit fairly quickly. If their only sustenence are man-made chemical, electric, and nuclear sources of energy (like missiles, ammo, and electric power) given how fast they appear to consume them, coupled with the fact that there are virtually no more humans around to produce more of these things, they're bound to run out of 'food' fairly quickly.

 No.772938

>>772931

It would tie in with the fact that they can and access all the technology, like when the nuko opened the hatch and displayed the photos.

 No.772941

>>772930

>robots are a fairly common and established technology by that point

I took it a bit differently. The robot's purpose is to inject programming into other manufacturing robots to create more of itself independent of human direction. It seemed like the beginning of a man-machine war story. I think that's what necessitated the electromagnetic bombs, but the collateral damage was too great and humans still died out.

The mysteries left make me want to see more of this setting 100, 500, and 1000 years prior to the events of this story.

>I think the evolving robots and layered cities came before the war.

Well, the military robots were made in the middle of the war, in my opinion. The first image of war was a normal warfare and after the big victory starts to show robots.

Also, the image of air raid looks like a normal city instead of layered one. But, this could be an artistic error of misunderstanding of original material.

> I'm assuming it got to a point where society became completely dependent on the robots to function

I still wonder how and why they still fight after they be sent back to the age before transistors.

I don't know why, but they still do have small arms and plenty of ammo to go around even years after the apocalypse(s), given that Yuu can still find enough ammo for plinking. Judging by Ishii's workshop, they probably had the means to produce WWII-tier, pre-transistor planes and tanks, and given that automated trains still work by the 33rd century, they probably had the means to mobilise their troops, even if only by trains like in WWI.

Whether the disagreement is about Rei vs Asuka, Kirino vs Ruri, Rem vs Emilia, who gets the last piece of chocolate, laughing at the laser of mass destruction or being harrowed, "better" or "worse" genetics, or preferring one prophet over another, doesn't really matter. The entire human race and its ridiculous ideals will lead it to extinction even if it's aware of it's own fate at every death along the way.

In russia they used ships on board nuclear reactors as electricity generators (in Vladivostok IIRC) after the soviet union collapsed and some of the power plants were shut off.

That might have been the intent, that or fixed ICBM launcher + command post.

It's clearly not one war. It's a succession of wars, the first one Japan is still Japan (and wins), then there is a second (air raids?) then a third (robots), etc...

One can assume mankind and tech still evolve, then peaked then came crushing down because the succession of war killed off the biosphere, mankind tried to compensate with tech, and built the cities trying to be self sustaining hence with levels and on top of each other, cannibalizing what could be (which led to more war, which led to more and more destruction and less and less resources) up until the point on the ground the war is still there but it's probably mostly armed bands that are barely using/maintaining tech on the level of WWII.

>less and less resources

Have you seen the size of the city? Its bigger than fucking france. They might as well hollow out whole fucking Earth. Have you seen the size of their factories and other facilities?

It was implied that war caused all of this, but its cant be possible. You dont just build giant ass cities while everyone have weapons of mass destruction. They have fucking infinite batteries. Unless they work on tesla ideas or aliens made them, like they did in russian book with exactly same fucking technology or they are super effective energy sources. You know regular batteries can explode? Can you imagine explosion of something million times more potent?

Have war ever caused decline in technological progress?

>cities trying to be self sustaining hence with levels and on top of each other, cannibalizing what could be

Do you really think that you can build something of that size just by fucking spontaneous construction?

>enemy solders are comin! Quick! Build additional level to the city!

Sounds like you gain knowledge about world by playing mobile games for retarded kids.

The only reason to build giantass cities like this is some impending catastrophe, like a fucking meteorite shower.

And construction of said city is impossible on unstable islands, they need a bigass tectonic plate. Just like jap neighbors had. And you can even determine areas that will be the least affected by the shower and put everything there. Like a bigass cities.

Do you know the most effective way of mining that spends least amount of energy? For example a creature that feeds on energy, like radioactive ore/refined fuel. MAKE SOMEONE ELSE DO IT! Manipulate them into concentration everything in one place, by destroying everything else. Sounds familiar?

Btw, do you notice that city do not look used at all. Like something prevented it from accepting citizens. Empty buildings, empty everything. So its unlikely that people lived there, only squatters moved there after big fuckup.
