It's set up to be some important thing, even the ED is all PhosxCinnabar themed, and yet she barely shows up, here and there they bump into each other, exchange two lines, then move on once again. It's almost the exact opposite approach of most action scenes where they make a lot of rapid cuts so it seems like things are happening but you can't really see any of it. They just let your mind fill in the gaps instead of actually showing you (usually because they can't actually show you). But in these scenes we can see precisely what's going in fluid motion as the camera shifts around to keep track of the action. The lack of cuts reminds me of a lot of martial arts movies in a way. This show is a rare treat and I think this episode really shows its strengths.

Good martial arts movies, yeah. I remember an interview with Jackie Chan where he explained why a lot of American action movies were shit (including some he acted in), and he talked about how they were too lazy or didn't have the time to make these fluid scenes where they show everything happening, so they went with the rapid cuts style where you don't see shit. In contrast, the stuff he works in in Taiwan they usually have a lot of time to redo takes as many times as needed, and the end result is a better product with action that actually looks and feels good.
Thanks to CG we get a good well choreographed action scene and they probably didn't even use a huge amount of time doing it. I hope other CG directors learn from this.

2D isn't going anywhere. Our brains are very quick to notice the inconsistencies which is why 3DCG in a mostly 2D show stands out like a sore thumb sometimes. The thing that the industry is apparently starting to understand is that 3DCG is very limited in its application. In order to be cost-effective in terms of producing TV anime you need to employ artstyles that lend themselves well to being rendered in 3D, and that is something that is perhaps more difficult to do (at least for the moment) than animating in 2D with a more conventional artstyle. Similarly 3DCG calls for a different style of directing and probably has other little nuances that I'm not familiar with that set it apart from animating in 2D.
What this means is that if you want a show that is both cheap and timely to produce and also looks good, 3D isn't the easy answer. Using it to fill gaps in things that are difficult to animate traditionally like machinery and architecture as has been common practice for a while is a lot cheaper than doing everything 2D, but pretty much anything natural like humans, animals, landscape etc. lends itself to 2D animation much more readily, both in terms of being faster to produce and also more easy to depict convincingly.
What I predict we're going to see is more fully 3D shows being produced and slowly becoming better quality as creators begin to understand what you can and can't do when animating entirely in 3D, but 2D is just so simple and relatively cheap to produce that it's never going to die off. Shows like Houseki no Kuni which are mainly 3D but also use 2D when appropriate are going to start coexisting with 2D shows that use 3D when appropriate.
No.769156
>>769152
One more thing I forgot to mention, on a more pessimistic note I also can see 2D animation becoming worse and worse in terms of quality as digital techniques develop, allowing animators to cut a lot of corners to make animation faster and cheaper to produce but also more soulless and generic as a result. Imagine something like a more advanced version of Live2D being used to produce entire shows in the future or even something like AI producing animation. So we might actually see a role reversal where 3DCG anime becomes the stage for high quality and visually interesting animation while 2D animation becomes the more shunned red-headed stepchild of the industry.

>So the end of 2D is nigh, is what I gather. I am interested in hearing what your personal opinion is on this seeminly unavoidable outcome.
I don't believe this, necessarily. I feel that Anime as a medium and the studios that chug it out have been stagnating for about a decade due to a variety of factors (low ROI and high production cost, waning popularity, talent drain/end of enthusiasts). Rather than the end of 2D itself, I see legitimate 3D Anime as a new and competing branch that may allow previously untapped talents to enter the field.
The plain facts feeding this view, as I see them:
>3D CG is reaching the point that it is a serviceable way to deliver any/all other facets of an Anime.
>3D CG Studios are approaching the talent-level and bravery required to match up to the quality of dominant studios*, who often with far larger budgets and more staff.
*This will need to be substantiated by Studio Orange itself. If they begin putting out three anime per year while retaining some or all contract work, they've reached A-list Studio standards.
...as far as my comments of 'studios failing to compete', 3D seems to be a much more feasible way for small and mid-sized studios to coalesce. Big studios have been offloading Seinen for decades (including manga like Houseki), and if new 3DCG studios form, or old ones start making independent content, I think they'll be a force to be reckoned with. More competition is better, and the pessimistic view of 2D dying will only happen if people like Yuyucow denigrate 3D's potential- right up until the point where the old guard get eclipsed.
>>769152
>What this means is that if you want a show that is both cheap and timely to produce and also looks good, 3D isn't the easy answer.
Traditional studios have been funding and propping up new CG studios they contract in to do work for exactly that reason. Studio Orange is one such example, and they are now demonstrating their capability to make something entirely of their own.
>Shows like Houseki no Kuni which are mainly 3D but also use 2D when appropriate are going to start coexisting with 2D shows that use 3D when appropriate.

Bodhidharma asked, “Can each of you say something to demonstrate your understanding?”
Dao Fu stepped forward and said, “It is not bound by words and phrases, nor is it separate from words and phrases. This is the function of the Tao.”
Bodhidharma: “You have attained my skin.”
The nun Zong Chi stepped up and said, “It is like a glorious glimpse of the realm of Akshobhya Buddha . Seen once, it need not be seen again.”
Bodhidharma; “You have attained my flesh.”
Dao Yu said, “The four elements are all empty. The five skandhas are without actual existence. Not a single dharma can be grasped.”
Bodhidharma: “You have attained my bones.”
Finally, Huike came forth, bowed deeply in silence and stood up straight.
Bodhidharma said, “You have attained my marrow.”
Flesh and bone can be related easily enough, but what of skin and marrow? Well it's impossible to avoid becoming contrived when attempting to relate an author's inspiration to real world religious accounts but I'll give some opinions anyway. Skin suggests the form and shape, but only that, it is hollow otherwise, could this relate to the the tsukijin? For marrow, it is important to understand that Bodhidharma passed his position, actual and symbolic, to Huike at this point, and the only remaining entity is Kongou, who holds an important spritual and actual position of a sort of leadership. Of course the name Kongou has many conotations as well, but perhaps this may have a stronger relation to the meaning behind these characters. In an explicitly literal sense, we even find marrow providing blood to the body while nestled inside bone.
This does carry with it implications though, why would skin desire to become 'whole' again, since that would mean to become Bodhidharma in this case? Is it just that skin fails to understand the truth of buddhism? Tsukijin are obviously very concerned with form and ritual (considering their appearance in their 'hunts') conversely to Huike who held that meditation was the key to the understanding of buddhism. Is it even reasonable at all to suggest that Sensei may draw from elements of or be a parellel to Huike? What implications might the things said by his disciples have on the different races of Houseki no Kuni? Of course the biggest issue here is how much I'm mixing the literal and the figurative in relating it to Houseki no Kuni, frankly, I don't even understand the real symbolic relevance of the particular elements of the body in this context at all, so my ability to analysis is superficial at best.
Anyway I don't intend to make any meaningful analysis from this, especially since I haven't read the manga and am only as far in the story as the anime has reached, but I thought this shared an interesting relationship to Houseki no Kuni and that some anons might have other interesting or more relevant ideas to share

Flesh within skin, Bone within flesh, Marrow within bone.
The four are presented in a linear relationship, and though all of them fall under the Bodhidharma's teachings, it is supposed that Huike comprehends them the best.
It's entirely possible that Ventricosus missed the point. If I were a gambling man, I'd guess that the Gems are the Marrow within bone, the Admiribilis are the Bone within flesh, and the Moon People are the Flesh within skin.

It just leaves me wanting more and I'm sure they left it open-ended because they're unsure about making a second season. Since they only knew they would have minimum one season, they decided to focus on Phos's growth. Hence the ending scenes. The point of Padparadscha was for her to warn Phos about what she was doing. That revealing the truth may be worse than leaving things as they are. Why it had to be her to tell Phos this, since Cinnabar tells her something similar when they meet later anyway, I'm not sure. She's an interesting character but we don't really get to see enough of her to understand where she fits into the story except that she's from a past time.

It makes sense for her since powdered Cinnabar was used as blush for makeup.

Given that the manga goes far beyond what's been adapted, they probably weren't really looking to conclude much. With how old the source is though, it might've been a lead-in for a sequel, rather than your typical "go buy the manga"-ending.

Damn fine show, I rate it a solid 9/10. Made in Abyss levels of immersion, as most episodes felt like they went by within minutes. Although I gotta say this ending was pretty shit as it almost seemed to emphasize the many plot details that couldn't be included form the manga. Because of this, a lot of things felt forced this episode like Yellow Diamond's relationship with her partner, with Padparadscha as well as some of the interactions the secondary gems were having at the end. Anyway, they're obviously trying to milk that second season but we know better than to get our hopes up, ne?

I'm guessing that the slugs on the moon feed not off of gems that are captured but off of some random moon minerals. The slugs then turn these minerals into an agate shell, which are then grinded up by the tsukijin. If the tsukijin plan is to cover the moon in glitter, then the small amount of gems they capture will never be enough to get them very far. Farming slugs and taking their shells (which are far larger than gems and keep regenerating) is the most efficient way of collecting shiny material.

The only thing that stops the lunarians from taking all the gems is Sensei, and now Phos is working against Sensei. And even wants to break Adamant
The lunarians are also highly suspicous, Aechmea states that they returned gems from the moon, but it was established that no gem ever returned.
