Can we have a thread about this?

I'm pretty sure everyone must've read it as an edgy teenager and thought it was the tighest shit already, but what are your thoughts on it now? I recently went back to it due to boredom, just to see that it all starts falling apart on the first amnesia arc, and it keeps getting worse and worse up until L crooks, which brings about mello and near and that's when it becomes truly unbearable. It gets a minor bump in quality once the "ELIMINATE" guy comes around, and they expose a cool plot point of he thinking for himself instead of being just a pawn, but it's quickly scrubbed away. The ending feels pretty retarded compared to the shit they had been pulling before(they just switched the notebook) and it's really jarring to see the "Detectives" go from actually investigating and thinking about shit to "Light is Kira because yes"

Translators note.

Series died with L, yes. But even as an edgy teenager I thought the whole thing was much too full of itself.

>everyone must've read it as an edgy teenager

I haven't read the manga at all. I have watched the first two anime episodes and then dropped it, because I couldn't bear the idiotic premise. Maybe it was too late for me to enjoy the story, as I was an adult already then?

 No.755520

>>755515

As always, the anime is worse than the manga, but yeah probably.

 No.755522

It was good but it is pretty much a general consensus that the series died with L. It is the problem with a lot of these mangas, the authors don't really know exactly how they are gonna finish it or what they try to convey, so they try to come on the fly with these new arcs to keep going because the editors NEED them to keep going no matter what and they become a clusterfuck.

I remember that fake ending about L using one of the rules from the notebook to actually win over Kira, the one where if you write the name of someone in a Death Note almost at the same time that someone else wrote the same name at another Death Note, it would be cancelled and the person wouldn't die.

They made this fake ending where L just feigns his own death, and just writes his name in another Death Note to survive with the perfect timing. It was a lot more interesting that the bullshit we got at the end to be honest.

 No.755525

>>755515

Never read the manga either, but now i'm curious if the manga ended with the same absurd bullshit ended where the cops magically figure out Light is Kira, then find out where he hid the death note, stole it, made a flawless copy of the entire thing, handwriting, tears, and every other little detail, to the point that not even Light could tell the difference, all within a few hours before cornering him and having Light do a complete heel turn and going batshit insane while admitting everything before Ryuk put the series out of its misery.

Pretty much, word for word.

 No.755531

>>755526

Well, putting my typo-riddled post aside, I went and flipped through the last few chapters of the manga online.. and it's just WORDS WORDS WORDS about how they pulled off this miraculous leap in logic.

 No.755536

I was in love with the concept and how the execution began, I never expected Light to immediately go apeshit and start mass murdering people, that kinda blew my mind at the time because I was expecting it to be about spooky high school kids or something. The rest of the series was a slow descent into pure retardation that coasted on the good faith won by that strong first impression, which miraculously lasted enough to reach the end, just barely.

A lot of people say L's death was when the series got retarded, but it was already getting increasingly retarded ever since L started suspecting Light, L's death was just a nosedive.

 No.755542

Since a bit of a consensus has already been established, what did people think of the films? I had heard they almost solely focused on the L related matters, did this improve anything?

 No.755548

Never read the manga. Watched the anime years ago, and wasn't exactly a teenager back then. I found the whole detective story surrounding it quite absurd and stupid, but I still kept watching it because I found Light and his crusade quite sympathetic. Didn't care about the whole L dying thing to be honest.

To me the whole thing was about Light, and the concept of the Death Note. I wish they used it to tell a more realistic story about a man who has to come to terms that he's the only one who can rid the world of scum, with real police investigations and whatnot. Too bad they decided to use it to tell a rather unbelievable, edgy detective story.

Also reminder that Light did nothing wrong.

 No.755559

I wish it stayed about two hyper autists trying to outsmart each other. Personally I started disliking it when misa misa entered the picture. Then the anime started fucking around a bit, and then the memory wipe happened and it was half alright(where the group started working as a kickass unit) and half retarded(with L still suspecting Light, and Misa Misa still fucking around), then Light got his memory back and L died and the animu went to shit the second the fucking mobsters had a rocket ship.

What would be a comparable anime to death note in terms of two factions trying to outsmart each other through careful planning and insane autism?

Not to politicize things, but I think the concept could be interesting if taken in a very modern approach. More specifically, the way internet hiveminds have become more efficient than the government and couple that with the cult-like following that Kira began to gather.

The stakes would need to be much higher and the focus would need to be more on the consequences and ripple effect a Kira would have on the world beyond just having edgy teenagers going on some shitty web forum and saying "I ♥ U KIRA" like that's some grand social revolution.

>A lot of people say L's death was when the series got retarded, but it was already getting increasingly retarded ever since L started suspecting Light

One of my favorite scenes in the anime was when L and Light were playing tennis and they were still trying to outwit each other, every pass and hit became a kind of complex mind-game to them while everyone around them just thinks they are playing a friendly game.

I was gonna say Code Geass, but there wasn't really anyone who matched Lelouch in terms of planning and brainpower AND remained a constant threat. The closest were the mind reading guy, who easily got defeated and the king, but he rarely did anything.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is all about turbo autists trying to outsmart each other.

 No.755663

Decided a few weeks ago to give it a re-read for the first time since it came out.

The series gets retarded after L dies, but Light was retarded from day one. that's why L's death is the breaking point, I think even to the author. After Light "outsmarts" L the world becomes unbelievable. for all the stupid shit going on, that's the breaking point, because it fucks with the internal logic of the world.

Read the first couple of chapters to remind you, youll se what I mean. Light's a self defeatist from the get go.

Also, having Light sit and yell at a computer screen while everyone else gets shit done for an entire arc. He's no fun as either protagonist or antagonist when he's completely without agency, and when he's neither, there's nothing left to engage you. No other character besides L has any character without Light to react to.

It's funny how his motivation is to become a "god of the new world", when he lives in a world where he is litteraly the center of everyone in it. dude won before he even begun.

It clearly was best left when L died. With the introduction of M and N, you had to follow the logic behind why those letters were chosen. It was suppose to signify succession of those who take on the task of fighting evil. There have been many people before L given the code name and there will be others to take up the task after because justice always prevails.

I could kind of get behind that if it didn't have 2 problems. It took 2 people combine to match L which made them lesser characters overall and the convoluted way they figure out that Yagami is Kira. You could believe some of the crazy shit that L did because of his eccentric personality, but not from M and N. If it was going to go this path, the best ending would be for the "evil" person to win in the end.

I also remember that did another one-shot after Kira dies and it amounted to, "Man, Kira was a much better antagonist. Oh, well." If they somehow bring back Death Note that isn't a live action show, they have nothing much to work with other than Misa and the Kira cult. They could even ass-pull Yagami back and he is reincarnated as a shinigami and tries to get his revenge and Ryuk and the world that denied his justice. Reunites with Misa to get the band back together and start a global death chess match with Near if he's still around.

I think the duo behind Death Note has waned a bit since I don't see many people talking about Platina End.

I think the best choice is to just leave it alone.

The mango had a good thing going for a decent amount of time and I don't think you can make another animu without it being weaker in comparison, at least in music.

My biggest problem with Post-L death was how the "cat-and-mouse" aspect of it felt like it was completely dropped since Near already knows from the get-go who Kira is and had so many tools to reveal him yet Light didn't have anything on Near, he was just fucking around the entire arc doing jack-diddly-squat to deal with Near. There was no competition against Near, and I never felt once that Light might have the advantage against Near.

There are two movies from 2006, but it's basicly one 4 hour extravagansa. It definately has its moments. It's shot like a shitty soap opera, and the production values are terrible. Guess they spend the entire budget on licensing Red hot chilli peppers for the themesong.
