I'm that faggot who couldn't understand Sunshine's appeal in the other thread. I think I found my answer now.
It's less about the characters themselves this time around or their progression, and it's more about the group progression as a whole. As an idol show, this is a bad move, because the characters are what idols are supposed to be about. Oh well.
In any case, Sunshine is the name of the show, and that's the point of it all. Sunshine represents shining, of course, but more specifically, shining down on something. In this case, Aqours is the thing that's being shined on. They are the 0 that is being shined on by the 1, which was Muse. By rejecting 0, they seek to become 1, but they cannot become 1 by being shined on as 0, which is the reason for the whole not following Muse anymore thing.
The thing I don't get now is the fact that Chika still holds out her hands in the final concert of S1, trying to reach for that shine. It's like she hasn't fully internalized the fact that she needs to become that shine instead of reaching for it. Maybe it's just in nature for Aqours to not become 1. Maybe their appeal is in the fact that they will always be striving for that 1, and always being 0.
That's something I can get behind.

I think Chika and the others summed it up well at the end of this episode, they want to struggle. Even if everything they are going to do is ultimately futile they are still going to try and find their own Sunshine together. Just watched the Rin episode, the one that follows Niko's episode with her siblings, and that shit is powerful, the way they deliver these conflict episodes one after the other without being too cheesy or too heavy, just enough to make you care about what's going on without bringing you down, and then closing with the feather scene in the ED.
