I apologize in advance for missing previous discussion on this movie, anons, but I was wondering if you'd like to talk about it, work it out?

I just watched it myself, you see: Planned on having a few drinks and watching a comfy movie tonight. I wasn't ready for this. I wasn't ready for this at all.

There was the coal-burning, sure; I choose to ignore that part and let myself - instead - float away on a journey of emotional shit-fuckery.

Boy, did I ever end up poring out half a lung. The imouto, the oka-san(s), the loser best friend who grew a Hitler stache, the memorable classmates and, of course, the MC.

I'm also sure I have gained a deeper understanding of bowing in Japanese culture because of this.

Also, one's of Shouya's internal monologues led to my discovery of Japanese choral music. This might be as good as it gets.

Now if only Your Name didn't come out around the same time this movie would have had a chance.

I feel like your name gets more credit than it deserves just for being normalfag fodder with it's retarded romance plot that barely has development.

>Look this vulnerable girl is mercilessly bullied! Don't you feel angry and sad?

>Look at this super sad scene! Feel bad!

>Look at these evil classmates who are evil for the sake of being evil! Feel angry now!

It basically is just all about making you feel bad by going to extreme lengths without making sure it feels fitting. Like the dog torture scene from Elfen Lied. It is the lowest form of entertainment.

It's about people not caring about how other people feel. It's a simple message blown way up.

Ueno was right.

It was an enjoyable movie, but is shadowed by KyoAni's previous films. Not worth the praise it got, but still a pretty good flick.

The movie was so short of the manga and lacked so much by comparison that I couldn't even stand to finish it. I got maybe a third of the way through before I ditched it.

 No.740182

Deaf-chan was adorable, and the most engaging characters aside from them were fatso and the moms. Watching Deaf-chan's mom materialize from the Warp to smack the other cunt was a great scene.

Aside from that, the other characters were cunts, and that other guy that became friend of them was just there because they didn't flesh him out much. It was great to see the glasses bitch to be called out for how awful she was, and the cat cafe girl being smacked by Mom, even if she looked like a huge semen demon that made me want to bully her with my dick.

It was almost cartoonish how petty or cunt-ish some of the characters were, really, especially the teacher. Even for Japanese standards, he almost looked like he furiously fapped back at home from all the bullying to loli Deaf-chan.

Agreed. I managed to finish the movie entirely but it didn't even hold a candle to the emotions I had when I read the manga. From changing around the order of certain important events/dialogues, to compressing the storyline to the absolute minimum, to Shoya's character being reduced to a spineless autist. Seriously, two of my favorite moments in the manga were when Shoya told Ueno that he hated her right after meeting her again, and when he gets visibly angry and storms off on his own accord when "coincidentally" meeting up with his old best friend at the theme park.

Kyoani's adaptation didn't do the source material justice.

Adaptations never do the source material justice, when they do, they are like a 1 in a 1.000.000 miracle.

Agreed. I read the manga a long time ago and remember thinking it was pretty good. I found the movie to be not great at all. I don't understand why everyone is raving about it. I saw it at the cinema as well and it still didn't move me much at all. I thought Your Name was leagues better than it.

Of course, it's always as >>740255 says. In this case watching the movie really made me want to go find and read the manga. I enjoyed it so much despite it being quite obvious that there were gaps in the story and that some characters had far deeper backstories that weren't explored. They didn't even explain why imouto was sleeping in the playground with no shoes. But I suppose there's only so much they can fit in a two hour animation.

Retard, they explain why the sister is sleeping in the park through a couple of flashbacks right when Shoya and her are walking in the rain, pay attention next time. Most of the complains in this thread are fucking retarded.

The only thing the movie needed was to change from the manga was... the movie itself.

Fight Club, No Game No Life and that's about all the good adaptations I can think of.

You can only do so much with two hours, and I'd rather they dropped some of the depth (and reworked the terrible ending) than railroad as much shit as possible in there. The modifications improved the story overall; the pacing gave each important shot enough time to settle in and the plot was structured very well to match the new medium. What mattered was that they make a good movie and they accomplished that.

The only complaint I have is the extreme overuse of visual filters: Depth of field, blur around the corners of the picture, and especially the chromatic aberration. In small amounts it can guide the eye where it needs to be or add a nice emotional punch, but when added to 80% of the shots it comes off as tryhard. They wanted a storybook feeling, and I appreciate where they were going with that and felt it was appropriate given the story, but in practice it felt like cheap emotional manipulation. I see this shit a lot with mediocre artists who turd-polish their drawings by drowning it with filters like these. Rather than get a reception that matches their talent, they are applauded with words like "comfy" or "artistic" because of a Photoshop filter that took them a click or two to apply. Then again, I guess the very style of anime is emotionally manipulative in the first place. Maybe it's appropriate after all.

Well anon, I didn't graduate with a visual arts degree so it's not within my abilities to make such a thorough analysis of animu as you. I'm just here for the cheap emotional manipulation.

A friend of mine told me to watch this, he loved the manga and thought the film was very good (which seems to be a controversial opinion in this thread). I really liked it, I've grown a bit emotionally dead inside and this still hit me in the feels really hard. Maybe I'm a sucker for this kind of stuff, but I'm sort of shocked at all the hate for it in the thread.

Don't get us wrong, the movie just by itself could be really good. I read the manga first, and boy let me tell you the movie was a Hell of a lot more uplifting than the manga. Overall it has a lot to do with how reading the manga and watching the movie are both completely different experiences, with KyoAni's decisions on the style of telling the story, the change of which scenes get more emphasis, etc.

It's really best to both read the manga and watch the movie so that you get both perspectives. Especially since the manga has a great many more details than the movie which definitely changes the perception of the characters.

I liked the movie and thought it did a great job of adapting the story. Some omissions I would say improved the story, like his friend (Nagatoro?) not turning into a fucking faggot. Lack of a movie subplot makes some parts feel disjointed, but it was the weakest part of the story.

The things I miss is the pretty boy decking Shouya in the face over shit he doesn't understand, without it Shouya telling him to fuck off seems a bit unnecessary.

Also I would have loved to see the teacher scene.

Overall a pretty good adaptation. But if you are going to be changing shit, you could Actually focus more on the fact that Shouya was bullied even before he ever met the deaf girl. It was always glossed over, and the whole issue made it look like he was a guy at fault who has changed, but he was bullied for a significantly longer time and never had a chance to move away from it like she did.

Or at least show us a kissu. The manga blueballing us was enough, the movie didn't even show them holding hands

I actually downloaded the manga because of this thread and I'm really excited about it because this kind of suffering is right up my alley.

 No.748885

You talking about how he was bullied after being pushed into the water by his friends?. Because yeah, I agree that the movie glossed over that way too hard. Plenty of anime-only fags think that Shouya didn't atone enough for bullying Shouko because of that. The movie was focused a lot more on only the aspect of Shouya seeking redemption for his past actions rather than him forgiving his old friends like in the manga.

>>748717

This thread also made me want to go and re-read the series even though I read it a few months ago.

the coy at the beginning of the movie represents the MC moving forward while the rest of his shitty friends stay back.

Watched it a while back, made me wish for a qt sincere 2dgf. Maybe it was special, maybe it wasn't, but I'm not a changed man for having seen it.
