Oh also, it's not that much of an asspull, as the rules of Devil Fruit do not state that a DF User's powers are nullified by the ocean, just that the User themself becomes weak and powerless when mostly submerged in seawater. Seastone stops a FD User because it weakens them when it hits, but that's only if it hits, which is why Smoker can carry some around with him and still use his powers, even though he's in the presence of his Kryptonite. As long as Big Mom's not using her power while in the ocean, I see no problem. Likewise, Perospero is creating his Candy Slug IN the ocean, but he himself is not submerged. Even if he was, he could probably make a candy bubble around himself and be fine.

Luffy couldn't move while submerged, but his body could still be physically stretched by others, and as of as far back as the Fishman Island arc, he was able to use his powers to attack that squid while submerging the majority of his mass (third gear giant arms) directly into the water. That nature of the rule has always been murky, because no one truly knows how the Devil Fruits work. It's simply believed that the ocean "hates" DF Users, because it saps their strength, usually leading to drowning on a planet that's mostly water. But seastone having that same property and also being able to act as camouflage against Sea Kings for Navy Ships passing through the Calm Belt AND the fact that the 'ancient weapon' Poseidon has the ability to control Sea Kings... AND the fact that being wet from rain, or the fresh water of a lake does not sap a DF User...

What I'm getting at is that there's a piece to this puzzle that hasn't been revealed yet, and it's going to be more complex than simply being that giant bodies of seawater do that to DF users, just because, or that something about having your entire biology altered by a Devil Fruit automatically comes with that one specific weakness.

Big Mom is told the cake will be made on cocoa island, but she gets distracted by nut island and decides to go over there and rampage.

Curiously, this all seems to be leading the characters all back together again. Besides Nami's group heading to Cocoa Island, we see Bege who is also heading there to pick up his wife. Additionally, Germa ends the chapter by asking where Luffy is and then about getting their location say "Set sail!" This doesn't specify that's where they're going, but it makes the most sense.

Notably Judge is absent from the Germa pages, so he could be seriously injured or dead.

After Luffy complains about how hard it is to dodge Katakuri's attacks, Katakuri admits it's extremely stressful to him how many of his attacks Luffy is dodging, suggesting the gap between them may not be so big as we thought.

BM's army mentions their sea floor slug monitoring net isn't reporting on anyone's movements, suggesting either Bege or the Fishman Pirates took it out. It's occurring to me Luffy's probably walking out of this arc with a ton of new alliances and potentially another crew in the grand fleet.

I wouldn't go that far, Haki still seems more powerful. The only reason Doflamingo's awakened form was powerful was because he merged it with haki, and that wasn't even able to kill the random townsfolk he was stabbing left and right with it, and Luffy still beat him with just gear 4. Chapter 883 Is Out

Summary:

Cover page of Ideo punching some dudes for fighting on the fight. The Isis guy is with his crew I guess or whatever.

The rest of the chapter focuses entirely on the Luffy vs Katakuri fight. In short, Luffy is definitely going to win the fight. No spiritual victory, Katakuri is going down like Cracker.

Katakuri smothers Luffy with mochi to prevent him from going Gear 4, then he complains the fight has him at his limit and has interrupted his snack time by 40 minutes. Three chefs show up and give him his treats. He goes into a mochi house to eat in private.

Luffy eats out of the mochi and complains that everyone in this area is defeated by eating what they fight with. The chefs try to cover for Katakuri and say he isn't there, but Luffy can sense him with haki. He starts to run away so they mock him, but it turns out he's merely doing this to burn off the fat from eating all the mochi. Gag about bodies not working that way. Luffy prepares a kong gun and knocks off the mochi house leading to a two-page gag deriving from what Katakuri looks like under that scarf...

Katakuri is laying on his back looking like Hedonismbot and his mouth is giant and distended like that of an obese man with sharp teeth like a fishman. He's laying there moaning about how he's eating "sinful, immoral donuts" and they're "so yummy" as the chefs react in horror while Brulee's words about him never laying on his back or acting undignified play.

Katakuri immediately murders all three chefs for having seen his "true form". He then turns his attention to Luffy, and intends to murder him, showing his armament haki is stronger. HOWEVER, Luffy is somehow able after two unsuccessful punches to kick Katakuri upwards in his jaw with a jet stamp. Katakuri is knocked back, and Luffy exclaims "I get it now...! Your ABILITY!" Katakuri responds "Get what? So what if your kick connected!? Your ability can't win against mine!" Luffy goes Gear Four after saying Katakuri isn't invincible. A technique Katakuri evidently cannot copy.

I don't yet understand how he was able to connect though. If it has to do with interrupting Katakuri's meal, or the number of attacks, or having seen his face or what.

I'm gonna be honest, I think his "future sight" is a combination of Observation Haki and just sheer confidence. Katakuri's presence is seen to be pretty intimidating, and having a rumor that he can see the future floating around would make him all the more frightening and be seen as all the more powerful by those in the kingdom. I'm going to sound like a total fucking over-analytical fuck and if the following chapters make me look like a right fucking faggot feel free to say so. Or just do it now if you're so inclined. Katakuri's weakness is his emotions. In his state of being unemotional, analytical, and pensive, he was dominating Luffy in that fight, and hasn't really seen any struggle in the story up until now. However, the only time we're seeing him get hit now is because he's upset about being caught eating. He's flustered, and it's caused him to become weaker. He could never actually see the future, it's just that he was confident and analytical - probably mixing that with some Observation Haki of course - and just had a 100% prediction rate for what his opponent was going to do. Similarly to Charlotte Pudding turning against Big Mom because of her emotions, Charlotte Katakuri is weaker because of his. In fact, one could say his emotional defenses were broken down by Luffy by smashing in his Mochi House and seeing him in his most vulnerable state. So, my thoughts are that Katakuri is just an analytical badass who can't handle when his heart goes Doki-Doki Or does his go Mochi-Mochi? and it makes him less perceptive and therefore easier to hit.

I think I understand how Katakuri's powers work. The full extent of awakening doesn't just involve turning your surroundings into your element, but even select targets, including your own body and maybe weaker opponents. Hence his body isn't constantly intangible and he needs to use his awakening on himself every time an attack is aimed at him. But I have to wonder, what about stupider Devil Fruits like the Swim Swim fruit, the Bara Bara fruit or Jacket Jacket fruit, what would awakening for fruits that aren't exactly elements be like? Would an awakened bara bara just basically be the Ope Ope? We saw the consolidation of BM's other forces searching four the three pirate crews, Sanji finished making the cake. Amande is turns out runs Nut Island and thus is none too pleased about BM destroying it. Similarly we've only seen Kaido do the same thing. We know he was building an army of Zoans using artificial fruit, and every crew he encounters he forces to work for him. Other than that he just wants to die. There's no official count on the numbers in Shanks crew, but he does seem to have new members every time we see him. Whitebeard's strength was largely how massive his fleet was, and he did recruit Ace by shanghai'ing him. This is obviously why Luffy just got the grand fleet and is forming all of these alliances with all these other crews and civilizations. If they were all in one place, Luffy's allies are probably at least equal in number to BM's fleet.

The Cracker fight was a bit of a drag. Especially when it was revealed it had been going on for hours. Definitely a cheap way of speeding time along. Even then though, I'd still say this arc's multiple plot threads are progressing a lot better than Dressrosa where there was a lot of characters just racing to a location and having pages dedicated to confirming they were on their way. Or trying to hold back the fucking bird cage. Here we're watching Luffy try to defeat a guy who is on another level of strength to him while avoiding all the forces of Big Mom, flinging himself right into her path and searching for a mirror to escape back into Katakuri's hands. He's got somewhere to be, but he's not just moving towards his goal, he's in conflict the whole way there. The Strawhat's escape from Big Mom has been resolved and now we've had a page to show where they're at, I suspect we won't see them again until they're back in range of Big Mom's navy. Then there's Sanji who is making moves via rapid cake preparation and will be likely heading into a brawl of his own in the next chapter with Oven. Every protagonist has a check-list that they're working through on the path to reuniting. To me at least, it's being a lot more engaging than what came before and on top of that, the comedy has been pretty on point.

If we assume every crew in the grand fleet gets a cover story, and every crew gets the same number of covers, we have two crews left to cover which means at least 9 more chapters in Whole Cake Island. Adding in the one break a month rule that means at earliest the arc will be done in 12 weeks, or mid-February.

The Reverie was assumed to be a short arc, but according to that count he intends for an entire year of chapters on it, which has lead some to speculate Luffy will end up attending somehow.

I keep thinking he's going to come up and all the islands he's saved are going to speak up and defend him. At the very least I'm looking forward to Shirahoshi and Vivi gossiping about him and becoming friends. Pfff. Funimation did a pretty crap job with Impel Down, and their adaptation of Bink's Sake was mediocre. Nothing but Ian Sinclair singing over himself a hundred damn times. Seriously, Funi has no fucking range or variety with its actors.

Longer summary:

Oven is a total shit to Chiffon, Pound tries to rescue her, Sanji uses his super speed to make it look like Pound punched Oven ala Mr Satan, but he doesn't buy it, decks Pound and goes after them. Pudding is quite aroused by all of this.

Oven recaptures Chiffon and threatens to kill her over den den mushi to Bege if he doesn't surrender. Bege looks stressed, but then from his ship, using a handgun he shoots Oven right in the fucking face sending him flying. This arc is really making Bege look like a boss.

We cut to the Sunny, Jimbe announces they're joining the battle because it would be boring to sit around hiding. We cut to Carrot who asks if it's about to be a full-moon. Back on their island, Wanda said to Luffy after he fought some other Minks "You're just lucky it wasn't a full moon" so probably they have like a berserker were form on full moons.

We cut to Luffy hiding out with Brulee, he's been using the mirrors to go all over the various islands. Katakuri is trapped in mirror world. Brulee tells Luffy to just head to choco island, but he explains he doesn't want to escape. We get a flashback to Rayleigh explaining haki to Luffy and telling him if he fights stronger opponents in extreme situation, his will awaken and become stronger. Luffy says he doesn't want Katakuri's haki to weaken, he wants to beat him at full power. He believes if he does this his observation haki will fully awaken and he'll be able to see into the future too. Luffy is going to defeat Katakuri confirmed.

I'm still pissed that the reveal wasn't that Katakuri was a supreme bullshitter, and the actual explanation is just "he's just really fucking amazing! (but also he's an embarrassing dork when he's alone)" because now Oda has set the stage for Luffy to get a bullshit last second powerup that he doesn't need right now. What Luffy really needs is more clever ways to use his devil fruit, especially considering the opponents he's been fighting lately. Future Sight means Luffy gets to keep acting exactly like he always has, without really learning anything.
