Sorry, I didn't stick around the generals from when this show was still relevant, so I don't know what the general consensus is. I really just picked this up because I saw a webm where some middle aged ladies tell a fat businessman they're going to report them to the police, so I immediately thought "this is my type of show" and decided to watch Warau Salesman NEW some time. I haven't read the manga so I can't comment on that, but I'll lay out my general theory I think people need to understand to not think "wow this salesman guy is a total douchebag this show sucks he's CHEATING them"

I'm only just up to episode 7, but I've seriously been hooked on this show, I wish I'd had watched it all with you guys earlier but I prefer batch torrents. So the way I think of it is, deadly habits and mistakes a perfectly likeable person can make are personified as the "Smile Salesman" youkai. Of course, he's not ACTUALLY real, he's just the temptation to come up with a solution to your problem that doesn't actually solve anything in the long run, the temptation to not improve yourself, and just try to ignore the real issue. He always understands the person he's speaking with, and urges them to make a move, and he absolutely never tells the person he's selling to is wrong. He'll support them all the way to disaster- the Warau Salesman isn't an intruder, but just the stubbornness inside everyone.

Hence his appearance as a smiling con artist, selling miracle cures to any of your troubles.

As for my comparing him to a youkai, he doesn't do many things that are strictly impossible, but he just turns up in a person's life and ruins it, much like a youkai. It's totally unfair, and it could happen to anyone. One bad thing this does for his appearence though, is people ACTUALLY think he's some demon looking for a reason to screw with people (like Kuchisake-onna, or the Wolf from tale "The Wolf and The Lamb" from Aesop's fables (The moral of that story is: "The tyrant will always find a pretext for his tyranny")).

The second point is, this isn't a comedy show as most people expect jumping in (the appearance of the main character doesn't do that any help), it's a show where you watch good people do bad things, and you just want to yell at them to stop. It's "real horror", as I think people call it.

The reason I'm making this post is, I just saw the episode with pic related, and sucked. It was absolutely terrible, and I think it went against everything Warau Salesman is about.

It's all about the hubris and the archetype of the Merchant, the anti-human.

 No.731899

He's just a mischievous little devil who gives people the opportunity for temporary happiness and punishes them when they over-indulge or try to cheat him. It's fables about self control, taken to the extreme. Whereas a normal scenario involving lack of self control produces gradually worse results, Moguro's version skips right to the end.

You should really watch the original series as well which has 100 10-minute episodes. Sadly only about 20 have been subbed. Some anons, even posted entire episodes in webm format in the previous thread, but sadly I don't have them saved.

In the original series, Moguro is even more creepy and will inflict even more horrible punishments. You will also notice that half of the newer episodes are worse remakes of the original, the other half being original content. On the other hand, in the original series, Moguro is even less consistent, and goes from "it's just a `harmless` prank bro" in the first couple of episodes, to "twisted karmic justice" in the latter ones.

 No.731999

>>731949

I'll give it a try if you say so, but I "consistency" is probably something I value most in this show. I mean, from my interpretation, it's not a malicious entity inflicting curses upon innocent people, but just people who don't want to admit they're wrong giving into the "Imp of Perversion", so to speak. I did note that the ドーンs seemed to be getting more extreme as the show ran, but since I didn't think it was a single character judging others, but just natural consequences coming about from the characters' exploits

 No.732031

I do want to think of him as some sort of devil, though not the most active one at times, because the folly of man doesn't need a lot of micromanagement. He just gives you a push in the right direction, and often it's nthe only thing you need to spiral out of control. In the old show, there was this guy who made big money betting in horse races, and Moguro did his thing only twice to give him a bit more of money.

I haven't watched all of it, but some anons say that sometimes even people who don't need or want his help will still get screwed by him, so it's not only human temptation made tubby flesh.

 No.732040

Moguro is some sort of real being, he has access to resources and knowledge that his victims wouldn't. He also interacts with other people besides the victim in some stories.

 No.732219

It's about a dickass demon being the hugest dick possible for the sake of being a dick. Look at the name of the bar he frequents and who he hangs out with.

Warau salesman was pretty good as it had these really touching stories of regular people being trapped by their own desires.

First few episodes are rough since they make Salesman to be completely fuck all random, with no real rhyme or reason. After those it gets berry gud.

Thanks, I'll check this out. I'm really going to have to learn Japanese though-- strange to think this fat asshole would motivate me better than some cute girls

Sorry for the bump. I just finished this series, and damn, I'm really regretting not being around for those last threads.

I think I'll listen to you guys and re-evaluate Moguro's character now.

Man, you don't see that coming at all, for a moment, you think that the twist of that very last episode, the last thing they wanted to show off was just some ordinary scam, and then there's that ending. Great show, I hope I'll be able to convince others to stick it out to the end

Something you might like to know about the actor that voiced Moguro in the original anime. He died long before the new anime got produced, but before his death he named his successor and that successor is the one playing Moguro in the new anime. I am sure the new one is doing his best to capture the spirit of the original Moguro, it's still not as good as the original, but it's the best we have, since he died.

Also the first 26 episodes are subbed, so you can watch those, without leaning japanese.

I love Warau's art style. It's somewhat Tezuka-like and I always love stuff that looks really weird. Here's a few of my favorite Warau reaction images.
