The Cold War happened, and the United States is pretty much the capitalist epicenter - of course this country's government wants to make communism look bad. There are a few communist parties like the PSL, the CPUSA, and the PCUSA, but they're not that big, CPUSA especially due to McCarthyist purges.

I'd say the furthest left that the Overton Window in the United States allows for is social democracy.
