My teacher brought some in for us in elementary school. Years later I looked up a recipe for it but never made it. Funny you mention it because it's rare to hear anyone talk about it.

Like the name says, they are hard. It was the original lifeboat ration. British sailors would sake them in tea or coffee to get them to soften up. They'd go great with a soup, after you let it soak a few minutes.
