there are still unfathomed depths in the oceans, what could be lurking in that abominable blackness and pressure? Is megafauna possible?

 No.37192

Deep sea gigantism is a thing so yes, it is possible and a thing already. As to whats lurking: Mostly simple life forms like worms and bacteria, with some fish that are mostly water and pretty fragile. Exceptions made for some hard shelled creatures like giant isopods and deep sea crabs.

I highly doubt anything bigger than a squid exists in the deep ocean. Big creatures need lots of food to survive and at a certain depth there are no plants to eat because there is no sunlight. The largest animals on earth live near sea level because most things grow there.

According to the stories I've read on cryptozoology books, some very big eels, giant turtles, mosasaurs, megalodon, giant jellyfish. And we know that giant squids exist, but the biggest one ever found was 'only' 17 metres long. I've read some stories about 40-50 metres long squids. I think there's still a lot of scary stuff hidden in our oceans, but it's probably dying fast due to overfishing and the collapse of marine ecosystems.

The creature in this picture is supposedly a giant octopus that was found on a beach in Florida in 1896, it was called the St. Augustine monster. If I recall correcly it was estimated to have been 30 metres long when it was alive.

we need giant lobsters now

 No.37255

Until recently, the giant squid was thought to be a myth from mentally ill sailors. But now we know it's real. And, some scars from old ships match with the claws on a giant squid, indicating they did sometimes attack human sailing vessels. They probably downed at least a couple over the course of history, ate a few sailors, and the rest died at sea.
