Measure the angle and length of the shadow. When you have proved that the Earth is round, you will know what to do with the rod at this point.
Someone did an experiment very much like this a couple of thousand years ago and was able to not only PROVE that the Earth is round, but also calculated its circumference to within a few hundred miles. (Earth is not a perfect sphere, therefore his slight error.)
