To Vince, they are not wrestling, they are sports-entertaining. "Wrestler" suggests all the "performers" do is wrestle.

But in WWE-think, they are informally "performers" and officially "superstars". Vince thinks this helps them appear as "actor-athletes" in general, instead of narrowly focused on wrestling.

iirc there's some legal word play going on by calling it sports entertainment instead of wrestling so WWE can pay less taxes as well. It's something to do with avoiding being considered an actual sport in legal terms.

If Jim Cornette is to be bolieved, and whether he is depends on your opinion of him, Vince was never really proud of running a wrestling federation and always had a bias against wrestling, so he came up with this entire "sports entertainment" bullshit instead so he could disassociate himself from wrestling as much as possible. As much as this has to do with Dunn who also hates wrestling, it probably has to do with Vince too.
