Is this game and its sequel good lovecraft-themed games?

It's SLOW. S L O W. The writing and the worldbuilding are the epitome of verbal diarrhea and mental masturbation - like they took pseudo-victorian world and added absolutely everything that came to their mind regardless if it fits or not. Lovecraftian themes are just a drop in the sea, next to genderless tentacle people, literal fucking devils, supernatural genderless government members (who are titled 'Mr' despite the game clearly stating that they aren't really men), living next to your usual big city ruffians, constables, nobility, etc. Secrets, souls, feelings, expressions and every other concept in existence are items, physical possessions you can acquire and sell. And all of it is in London, but underground, but there's also fuckhueg sea for some reason. It's mindfuck incarnate, and not in a good way.
But do give it a try.

As the poster above me suggested, SLOW is the right word to describe it. I never really enjoyed exploring the locales and generally there isn't much "game" to sink your teeth into. It's pretty much a glorified text adventure with a half hearted resource management type deal slapped on top.

It's alright. The writing's generally pretty good, but don't expect much from the actual sailing part of the game.

Well, I always felt like the whole setting with the text-based game and Sunless Sea felt a bit chaotic with all of its paranormal shit, but at the same time the idea of "all paranormal shit invades Victorian London at once" is kind of cool in a way.

Slow how? Too much WORDWORDSWORDSWORDS or the speed of the game is snailspace with no way to speed up?

>"all paranormal shit invades Victorian London at once"
I'd agree, but there's barely any dynamic in this 'invasion'. I couldn't resist an impression that it's a work of multiple writers who all wanted to insert their fantasy in the game, and these fantasies just sitting there next to each other. There's no drama involved, no social issues, except some dime-a-dozen revolutionaries - who don't even have a coherent, clear cause except lolsorandum fight the power - tacked on. Nothing thought-provoking, nothing impactful, and of course nothing offensive. In a game with devils, undead and monsters it's a mistake. A boring one.

I meant the actual gameplay is snail-up-the-slope slow. And not much to reward the suspense it tries to build. I don't mind reading in a game I love Planescape: Torment, but I've described my grievances above.

In short, no.

The theme of Fallen London is vapid victorian nihilism and so the writing style bleeds over into Sunless Sea. Its not always fitting tho because for sailors theres stakes whereas for Londoners theres none. Its not explained too well in the game but in the Nether everyone is technically immortal. I liked the game because I liked Fallen London, but if you never played it I can imagine the writing coming off as unironically vapid, when it is purposefully vapid.

Not really, if one dies he's moved to the tomb colonies, and he becomes a pariah of the society. So, there are some stakes.

I'm familiar with it and I didn't like it for the reasons stated above, I guess I'm not the target group. For me, it's just such an uninspired, forced slog that I couldn't make myself give a fuck about anything that goes on in the game. Despite enormous amounts of text it just didn't have anything to say, trying to be novel (adjective) for the sake of novelty, but without coherence and internal logic that would make the world bearable. Maybe it's just a personal impression, but it's like these postmodern books like Ulisses that try to destroy norms and be a trailblazer, but it leads absolutely nowhere.
The only thing that took my attention in FL before I left was going NORTH, because it seemed like something actually unique and well thought out, where your character renounces everything knowing it's a futile endeavor, it's nihilism in overdrive that would've given Schopenhauer or Gautama an apoplexy, and that the devs went an extra mile to conceal the endings - but I dropped it because, like everything else in this game and even more, it is such a fucking slog.

I don't think any game has made Lovecraft any justice even if good games have been inspired by his works. Sunless Sea isn't even an attempt at that though.
If you want decent horror then check out World of Horror.

At the end of the day it's a "time waster" type of game, that you are supposed to "play" for no more than a few minutes at a time. So it's perfect for when you are sitting in line or at the toilet, and even better for an office setting, when you do some tasks, have a 2 minute break to "play" the game and then go back to work. It's meant to be slow and grindy, and the candles, just reinforce it.

The sequel is abysmal. The original game is properly moody about the vast dark ocean where you have to weigh running the lights to keep the crew from freaking out versus killing the lights to keep your ship from being torn to shreds by huge monsters. The sequel is set in a labyrinth of bright pink coral. Everything's so bright you can't tell what is or isn't a wall at a glance.
Also, the actual writing talent went off to do Cultist Simulator and apparently got replaced with San Francisco/Tumblr faggots, so Sunless Sky starts with you being the lackey of a stronk womyn captain.

Sunless Sea will be a terrible game, and yet I will play through it multiple times. I would have never been able to explain why, neither to understand anything that ever happened.
I guess I just really liked the music and the atmosphere and the theme of the game.
