How are you suppose to get the most out of this game?

I keep hearing about all the experimentation you can do and how much depth the game has. It sounds right up my alley but the game is like a brick wall to get into. I had an easier time getting into Dwarf Fortress. It seems like the only way to play is exploiting the broken character creation system (making yourself vulnerable to a ton of shit then immune to magic to cancel it out and give you a ton of points to play with) or you have no chance.

I'm also seeing hints it might not have much room for experimenting with your build as people suggest. Stealing or Thieving for example is a completely useless skill because it can be completely circumvented by breaking into shops at night and being able to steal with no skill check. I think whats keeping me out is I'm afraid it'll have the problem Morrowind has, where you end up becoming a god pretty quickly and nothing in your build really matters.

I played it out on DOSBox years ago. The Unity remaster is fairly well getting there for feature complete although it's sitting a something like 0.10.x in versiononing.

I played this game for the first time when I was like 11, I don't see how it's all that tough to get into.

> I think whats keeping me out is I'm afraid it'll have the problem Morrowind has, where you end up becoming a god pretty quickly and nothing in your build really matters.

This is a problem, you get some insane spells pretty early on that would be high-tier end game stuff in the other TES games. For as much as people shit on Skyrim, its weapon and spell balance was actually quite fair. You don't start seeing high-end items until a dozen hours in, in Daggerfall you can find a Daedric sword within 150 minutes of starting a character.

Play Daggerfall Unity. It has mod support. Then mod it. Vanilla sucks. Unity is the way to go these days.

My favourite mods are

- Tedious Travel - https://forums.dfworkshop.net/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=1293

- Mountains and Hills - https://forums.dfworkshop.net/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=1008

Tedious travel replaces the "Oblivion-style" instant teleportantion fast travel with real-time travel. You ride your horse from place A to B but at Sanic speed and you can stop to normal mode at any time if you see something interesting. Mountains and Hills obviously makes the landscape more interesting. Then get some enemy spawn and quest mods to make the travel even more interesting.

- Warm Ashes Enemy Spawn Mod - https://www.nexusmods.com/daggerfallunity/mods/6

- Quest Pack - https://www.nexusmods.com/daggerfallunity/mods/2

I don't like vanilla daggerfall, but with these mods most of the things I have an issue with gets fixed. So I consider these the "bare minimum" when it comes to modding.

It is true that a lot of the skills like all those language skills are pretty undeveloped in the vanilla daggerfall. There's a mod that makes such a "high int build" a bit more interesting by adding an Archeologist Guild.

https://forums.dfworkshop.net/viewtopic.php?t=888

It basically turns the dungeon crawling into an "Indiana Jones" type of experience. Well, not really, but something like that. You get the idea.

If you're gonna go some fun build then you should just skip everything and run out of the "tutorial" dungeon instead of trying to clear it or something. Maybe even skip it with some mod or whatever.

Hindsight like this is the reason why old RPGs like these are hard to put into context correctly. Was the player with no information supposed to run into monsters he couldn't handle, or was that a design oversight? Most likely it was intentional, but the devs misunderstood how much players would hate being in that situation. Was the background that circumvents that problem an intended tradeoff (hitting any early enemy but losing other background bonuses) that just became too important to the meta, or was it just a thing some dev threw in without understanding how it reacted on the dynamic of early-game monsters that couldn't be hit? I frankly find these kinds of questions fascinating, but they're basically impossible to answer and, at the end of the day, not worth the research it would take to answer in any satisfying way.

Why would you want to play a decrepit old game like Daggerfall anyways? Everyone knows the only cool Elder Scrolls title anyone who's anyone plays is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Why, it was released all the way back in 2011 and still holds up with the newest version called The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition!

Not to mention you can always easily pick-up some handy new mods from the Creation Club for a modest sum, some of which actually goes to the mod artists! Isn't that something?

I built a standard character in Morrowind ages ago and got through the early game quite well. Had to reload a few saves to beat some of the tougher enemies.

Is there any decent documentation on the finer aspects character creation? I've heard you can do some crazy shit like vampire builds and such.

I'm also waiting on the Unity port of Arena so I can give that a go without tearing my hair out over the ass backwards controls and still unpatched bugs.

That's what I'm asking. Everyone talks about all the shit you can do and how much Morrowind watered the series down. Then everytime I look at character creation it's always "Abuse all of this but NEVER EVER USE THIS". I've heard of meme builds but no one talks about how to make your own meme build that actually works. I wish I asked this question when Daggerfall generals where still a thing.

It really is. It has that old school DOS 3d graphics. Like dungeon keeper. A lot of these early 3d games have a weird quality to them kinda like claymation. While that highres one does something I absolutely hate, which is jack up the resolution to a point where it doesn't fit the polycount and slap an ugly bump map on it with overly dark shadows that make no sense. The Dark Mod was an entire game with this shit and it was straight up unplayable for me.

I don't know why they show off the shading from the torch in the new image. It doesn't look good. It looks like someone's learning how to program 3D graphics and wanted to show off an effect they got working. Perhaps that's exactly what it is and they'll tone it down later in development. The floor and ceiling don't look nearly as bad, but putting fancy graphics on the same old blocky map designs isn't going to improve things all that much. Also, the game will still have the same low-resolution 2D sprites for things like people, so unless they redo all of those as well it'll look terrible anyhow. Maybe that's their plan.

reminds me of those 4k minecraft texture packs.

textures alone simply don't make an environment, if you go hd you also need the detail like foliage and debris to make it look appropriate.

That sounds like DFU itself implements modding hooks or whatever you'd want to call it by looking for and doing stuff with those dfmod files. In general, though, I imagine that modding a Unity game would require unbundling the asset files and doing stuff with them, which is probably what that UnityModTool does for you. I mean, I have no idea what I'm talking about, but textures, audio, and what look like sprite behaviors and shit are stored in asset bundles. I'm guessing that at least those are easy to change like how >>16864484 describes doing. But as for actually changing code for meaningful mods? I have no idea at all how Unity works there.

Daggerfall Unity being "open source" does not really mean much, the engine itself (Unity 3D) is proprietary. That's why choosing Unity for a retarded idea, but I guess when the alternative is waiting for DaggerXL (fat chance) it's still better than nothing.

Daggerfall fast travel is more Morrowind style than Oblivion style though. In Oblivion there are no consequences for warping everywhere, while in Daggerfall and Morrowind it costs you money. Plus since all the quests in Daggerfall are timed it costs you time too.

Walking everywhere in Daggerfall is as silly as refusing to use the silt strider or mages guild teleport in Morrowind.

Yes, it's brilliant. I wouldn't play Daggerfall without it. What's great with it is that there are some places in daggerfall that are not market on the map by default. You can randomly come across an Orc Fort and stuff like that in your travels. It also works really well with mods like Warm Ashes that add more random encounters to the game.

Regardless of the mods we have right now, the "overworld" of daggerfall is still not really all that exciting imo. I see huge potential though. I think some people are even developing some "tailor-made" content for this game on some irrelevant "small island" that's still like 3 times the size of Skyrim. Considering how Daggerfall is the size of Great Britain, there's more than enough real estate for mods like that.
