Holy shit, this is going to be such a garbage fucking game. I don't think I'll even consider pirating it at this point.

Care to post some gameplay videos with this "continuous movement"? Or will you admit that "continuous movement" really just translates to "walk around a small area but you're forced to teleport to get any further than 2-3 steps"

Well if this video is to be believed, then I was wrong - but this game will still be garbage and people here will still buy it. Judging by the locales, it clearly isn't meant to be played like a fast-paced shooter like Half Life 1 and 2 were, it's going to be cinematics first and gameplay second. What you niggers need to realize is that Valve wasn't developing HL: Alyx this whole time we were waiting for HL3. They probably only started last year, and it shows, considering how little effort was put into the gameplay.

What people wanted: Half-Life 3 or Half-Life 2 Episode 3 to resolve that clifhanger ending after so many years of no new games in the franchise.
What Valve delivers: A shitty VR game in the Half-Life series that nobody asked for.
Reminds of that Kickstarter video for Clang I think with Gaben smithing a crowbar and saying "These things take time." When is that time Gaben? When will an actual Half-Life game come out or are you satisfied with taking free money from Steam for the rest of your life? I guess it'll end up like that Kickstarter, never coming out.

This should by all means be a flop, but listen up. I'm gonna roll for some digits and if they're good digits, then the game will flop. But Valvedrones will eat any shit that Gabe pumps out after eating his cheeseburgers. Whatever comes out of this, is just what happens and we can't really change that.
But
The last Half Life game came out in 2007. That was 13 years ago. There are people who have been waiting over a DECADE for this shit and are desperate for whatever they can get their hands on. Wouldn't it be a shame if we spoiled it for them, like we did for Fallout 4 fans 5 years ago? I think we're due for another salt party.
Let's wait and see and anything worth spoiling comes out. Valve does a pretty good job of not letting things leak these days, but if some autist can get their hands on spoiler-worthy content before most people finish the game, that would be fantastic. It would truly be a happy ending even if the game was commercially successful.

It’s a nostalgia cash grab designed by nuValve for bleeding-edge hardware and spysoftware retarded hipster faggots. VR right now as a whole is basically nothing but an amusement park ride simulator and only people with more dollars than sense buy into it.
In my experience there’s nothing special about strapping the television to your face, wearing headphones, and using power gloves. VR’s practical applications as a way to play any kind of game where you’re not in some sort of cockpit are basically none. That being said I don’t think VR developers are really trying to push their own fucking medium’s limits and are just plopping VR into any first person game. I sometimes like to imagine playing a war game in VR. You’re standing in a cold war style military bunker room with a table in front of you, holographic projections of all your troops can be commanded, you can rotate, angle, and zoom the map in place or simply walk around it. Fully customizable controls where hand and finger movements in any combination can be mapped to perform quick key actions. Might even be able to make an RTS out of it. But no we need Skyrim or Minecraft in VR, games where adding VR does nothing to enhance the gameplay elements.

I am extremely concerned about the walking speed shown in this video and the IGN video. If you can't go fast without using the teleport/shift mode this game will be fucking garbage. I understand taking it slow to show off the environments in a trailer, but for actual gameplay it's very important to be able to run.

Wew lad.
Gameplay looks serviceable enough, the production quality is the highest for VR games to date, and according to Valve the game will be as long as a main title, so plenty of content to take in as well.
Still won't buy it because I'm a poorfag that can't afford a VR headset or a good PC, so I might just watch the story relevant parts on Youtube.
Hopefully they won't go on a VR game frenzy like that rumored Barney game, I'd really prefer a proper singleplayer FPS again, hopefully with better gameplay than what we had with more recent installments of the series so far.

We'll never get HL3, because Valve as a company can stay alive longer than any given gamer who played Half-Life. They know if they try to make HL3 they'll end up with a fucked-up mess that will make a ton of money but damage their reputation as a games company. They don't really care about making more money right now IF it's going to result in them looking even more incompetent with respect to making games, because someday they know they'll need to fall back on their ability to develop games in order to stay relevant. That's what this VR thing is: an attempt to keep alive some myth that they only make games that are somehow "fresh" and boundary-pushing.
It's either that or they want to keep HL3 in their back pocket so they can break it out as soon as they need a guaranteed cash infusion, which is probably closer to what they're actually thinking. If they wait too long everyone who actually knew anything about the series will have moved on (if they haven't already).

This trailer doesn't look like real gameplay. Everything's going to smoothly. If it was real the player would accidentally miss those items they sling towards themselves with the gravity gun
Unlike some anons here, I don't have a problem with this existing. But I don't want VR to be the future of gaming either.
I don't think vr can really have good gameplay, it's still and probably will continue to be a gimic or a sort of themepark-style experience.
This was probably the only way a new half-life game was going to be made. Valve lost interest in making games and stopped doing so, but VR interested them so they made this.
They prioritised having fun with their new toy during development over making a good game.

It's going to be as long as Boneworks at the very least.

If you take the requirements against the minimum it takes to run VR then this game is fairly optimised.

Isn't it basically a rail shooter at this point? You can walk around, but if you're able to just teleport from point to point then the game has to be designed to that lower denominator. I guess it's possible that you're teleporting to NPC movement nodes or something, so maybe the level design won't be hamstrung. I dunno. If I think of the game as Half-Life: Time Crisis it explains the pistol being overpowered. And HL2 was early on full of physics puzzles that were there just to show off the physics and the gravgun, so is anyone surprised that they'd do the same thing for this next game? Every major HL release since HL2 seems like it has to have some fancy ass new technology that it's showing off. It may or may not get better further into the game.

The Samsung Odyssey+ will play this game and is under 300 dollars. Index is the most expensive consumer headset on the market and not necessary to get into VR.

Yes, but that's still quite a steep price for a platform which hasn't gotten many interesting games. I was playing Chronos on the Oculus, and there really wasn't much of a difference when compared to other games in the genre. While VR is certainly interesting for FPS games, I'd argue that while the potential is there, there's also a lot of copy and paste crap on the platform right now, due to the fact that it can be seen as a "failed platform". Ironically enough, I think something like God Hand would've benefited greatly from VR, mainly in terms of its janky camera system.

Sure, you can play this without the Index but you can also play the Witcher 3 on the Switch. You can, but it's a significantly worse experience than intended, guaranteed to be nothing more than an afterthought. So why would you?
And it's still paying 250 at a minimum for one single game. Valvetards may find paying over a thousand bucks worth it for this garbage but me, refusing to pay more than 20 for any one game and rarely buying games at all, why would I consider this?

I'd argue that there's some worth for Witcher 3 on the Switch due to the fact that you can take it with you, be it on the way to work or at your mates place while he's taking a shit. This situation would be more comparable to playing a modern game like say Cyberpunk on a 500 dollar laptop.

Switcher 3 can at least hide behind portability, since it's likely still better than playing it on a laptop, and people are generally willing to take the hit to the frame rate if they have freedom of movement. VR, on the other hand appears to be somewhat regressive, since even the mere act of WALKING is shown to be somewhat cumbersome. iirc too, that thousand dollar headset's control stick is a piece of shit because they didn't want to add it in the first place. I just don't see the appeal of this thing.

Not at all comparable. If your PC is up to it, Alyx will run smoothly on whatever headset you use, unlike the Switch version of TW3, and the Odyssey+ is the same resolution as the Index. The only things you're missing out on are 120/144 fps (and it's not guaranteed 144 fps will be possible for Alyx, lots of games can't hit that even with a 2080ti), the grip sensors which are mostly a gimmick, and SteamVR's better tracking compared to WMR.
>for one single game.
There's Boneworks, Pavlov, assorted indie garbage, simulators, unofficial ports of classics like Doom and HL1 that work pretty well, and more to come. It may still not be worth it for you, but there is absolutely more than one game worth playing once you have VR.

Artifact was also a passion project for most of the devs, the problem is they made a game nobody wanted to play then dropped it hard after launch. Alyx was in development for years, even before Artifact.

To be more clear, as i understand it, the issue is with the bruised ego that card game caused, along with, apparently, losing the Dota chess thing to epic. That's apparently when they started to take development of HLX seriously, compared to LFD3 and HL3.

Now that I think about it, VR is all about immersion and shit, isn't it? How the fuck can you justify including nonchalant teleportation in a game like this and pretend like that's fine? No one in the world sees you just jump around from point to point? I get the whole motion sickness argument but teleportation, unless explained as an in-universe mechanic like some VR games have done, completely breaks immersion and defeats the whole point of it being a fucking VR game.

they made a game no one was willing to spend 20 bucks on. you can't even sell paper TCG anymore unless you're a long established brand (FFG's LCG model is the only thing that comes close and that still gets worse over time because the perceived buy-in becomes to big).
even when the money up front was "fairer" in the long run, it was retarded when most games it competed with are f2p.

unless you ever had it happen to you you really don't. it can really fuck you up and it isn't over when you take of the headset.
the other thing is valve, retarded as they are, designed the original vive wand without a stick, and navigating a horizontal plane with the touchpad is fucking aids, as good as the touchpad might be technically with it's haptics and shit. so the original "vision" was to have teleportation only. worse, since the market is small as fuck you still have to support that shit even if you don't want to because too many people still have them.
with a stick itself it's pretty chill, so you have to wonder what they were smoking back then.

not true, teleportation involves quite a bit more than "press stick move forward"

At least they didn't have the good ol' purple and black checkers. Glad to see the color palette is still stuck using blue, orange and gray to pad out the color depth. Anyone have that webm where they talk about the engine limitations of source, especially in CS:GO's battle royale mode?

I will expound on this because while I'm not a modder I have fucked around enough in gmod and Hammer to know what I'm saying, though you can still take all this with a grain of salt.
Source is fucking abysmal for developers. It is absurdly difficult to import custom content for it since it relies on proprietary file formats that there is no easy way to export to, the process for converting a standard Blender model to MDL format to be used in mods or SFM is dozens of pages long. It also grows incredibly archaic each year, and while it was designed to be upgradeable and adapted for newer hardware, it's still showing it's age both outside and under the hood. The development tools have had no real updates since 2013, and they all look and behave like they belong in 2003.
The reason why I'm amazed they got a battle royale at all is that everything ultimately gets funneled through Hammer, including map and game logic. Source is very stiff; it does not like being dynamic or doing dynamic events. In HL2, it is mostly an entirely linear game, you get pushed through the level, some scripted events happen, you shoot the aliens, and you move on to the next map, repeat approximately 40 or so times. Danger Zone has an ABSURD amount of dynamic events that have to occur based on players remaining, player locations, game stats, and probably dozens of other logic elements that I couldn't be able to list if I tried. All those elements have to constantly be in check with one another, and they can only be changed in a now 8 year old map editor in a 17 year old engine that was meant for linear FPS games that just wants to lay down and fucking die already.
The nice thing about Source 2 is that it's mostly backend improvements. Games look prettier, sure, but the dev tools they're teasing look worlds better than what we've had with Source for almost two decades now, and given how Volvo has been making strides towards lubing up the open source community with their Wine and Vulkan contributions, they should make adding custom content much more straightforward and simpler now. It's a shame we're probably not going to get gmod 2 since garry turned into a cuck with whatever the fuck Sandbox is, but something should come along to replace it sooner or later. Probably won't have the same feeling as gmod did though, that shit's timeless.
