Seeing the discussion made in regards to Wanted made me wonder what happened to "pure" third-person shooters. It seems like most games have gone down the path of either being cover-based or turned into action adventure titles. OR they go down the path of being a "hybrid" where the shooting is just another game mechanic.

To be honest till RE2 Remake and Control I legit thought TPS were dead as a genre, I feel like the failure's of ME3, Dead Space 3, Gears's lackluster follow ups killed TPS pretty badly.

Apparently there are still people who once read his comic that didn't realize he'd stepped off that cliff, even though he did it like two years ago in the open. It was surprising to me, for one, just because not hearing about it kinda made me reflect on how irrelevant webcomics in general have become.

But to actually try and contribute something to the thread: I don't think I've ever actually played a third person shooter. I've played Max Payne, RE4, the first Mass Effect, the first Dead Space, and the Division, but I don't think any of those count. All I can imagine about the genre as it seems to normally exist is that it'd be miserable trying to play them on a controller, but then again I hate using fiddly-ass thumbsticks for camera controls. I haven't used any kind of joystick to play any kind of shooter since I was a very dumb young person trying to play Quake without a mouse for shits.

Most third person shooters were either action-platformers, ripping off GTA, or built off the framework of FPS games but in third person. Action-platformers became cinematic experiences, GTA got too expensive to rip off, and actual FPS overshadowed the TPS. That's just how things turned out.

The newest TPS I'd played was Control by Remedy. It's a regular, coverless TPS but with telekenetic powers. You can dash, throw shit around, form a shield around you and fly. I found two major flaws with the game and I've never finished it because of that.
>Fights are not scripted, the game is some sort of metroidvania-lite which means certain rooms will spawn enemies randomly. This means none of the fights outside of the bosses(which were mediocre, especially the that thing that inhabits the altered items) feels like they were design, just slapped together.
>The game needed more movement interactions. You can dash into rails, but then you have to stop, wait for the dash animation to end, then start the rail jumping animation. Just little things like that that made me feel like the game part of the game wasn't so much thought out as the story part, because that part was pretty interesting.

>It seems like most games have gone down the path of either being cover-based or turned into action adventure titles
Way I see it is: modern players like their games as cookie-cutter as possible. I don't think RE4 singled handedly ruined TPS but it certainly contributed, I think the main responsible was Gears Of War. Since that game came out it seems nobody would play an TPS that doesn't play like that. In the same way most people won't play an fps that doesn't play like Modern Warfare.
People just don't want to learn new mechanics and get used to different gameplay styles because gameplay has become secondary to plot, that's why garbage like Uncharted gets so much praise. Why would someone play that retarded shit and not just watch a movie is beyond me, but people do.

Credit where its due, the games let you use cover off of everything including hanging ledges and whatnot not to mention Infamous did it much better but otherwise there is not a single redeemable thing about the series gameplay wise. Worse, Max moves at almost normal speed in slow motion. It isn't bullet time anymore, Max Payne is now a superhero that moves twice as fast as the rest of the world. Breaks the flow and is retarded.
>>16860872
>Why?
The plot is a retarded mess that reuses every character from Max Payne 1 in an incredibly lazy way and barely includes any new ones. Mona Sax is now a token love interest. Vinny Gogniti has gone from two-bit thug to guy who can afford a fancy apartment and a big cosplay suit so he can be terrible comic relief for a shitty escort section. Vlad is now a ridiculous white-haired villain with a contrived backstory involving alfred woden instead of a somewhat theatrical mobster. There's no variety in locations, with a huge chunk of the levels taking place in a bland construction site, ragnarok, or the funhouse. With such a tiny cast and so few locations it takes New York, a massive metropolis, and makes it feel small as hell.
There's barely any new weapons. The game's way fucking easier. You have more health, you have way more bullet time and bullet time is way more overpowered. The fancy reloads and flips you do in bullet time is fucking retarded. The AI is fucking retarded and blows itself up with grenades constantly. The cleaners aren't nearly as fun as the goons in the first game.
Even if you disagree with any of my points, Remedy themselves seem dissatisfied with Max Payne 2. Alan Wake breaks the fourth wall multiple times to talk about Max Payne 2 In the insane asylum a crazed game developer complains about the increased marketing focus on bullet time and all the spinny reloady shit, and later on a dying farmer has a very pointed line about his (possessed) friend betraying him like something out of a bad sequel. They know they fucked up.

>Taking control out of your hands 5 in 5 minutes is fine
I agree but it's not like the original didn't have a comic cutscene around every corner. The only problem is that the game doesn't let you skip them since it's a shit console port.
>Shit level design
Max Payne never had great level design, only good atmosphere and the airport level in 3 is fucking fantastic.

Shotguns are great, what are you talking about? They become essential once you start dealing with armored enemies. 3 also has by far the most accurate weapons in the series. 1 and to a lesser extend 2 have XCOM levels of inaccuracy.

It's 90% personal opinion, you're complaining about the game trying to fix dumb trial and error bullshit the first game did and not liking how the characters are developed while still maintaining the tone of the first game with less 4th wall breaks.
The only meaningful criticisms are the AI killing itself, the weapon variety
Rest is nitpicky bullshit or not real

Actually was kind of hyped for Dark Void back when it released, I love Jet Packs, so I got the game based on the cover alone.
I enjoyed it, but I never felt the need to actually replay it again. using the Jet Pack is fun, when ever your given enough space you can just jump off the ground, start flying around, and start dog fighting air board enemies, or take out enemies on the ground as if your a jet, but when it comes to ground combat it's still your average cover shooter, so when ever you don't have enough space to use the jet pack, or your not yet equipped with it it's not too impressive, at least this is how I remember the game after years of not playing it…
Capcom also made a 2D Dark Void Zero, I guess to cash in on the hype Bionic Commando Rearmed had around that time. haven't played that one yet.
