So anon, it's that time of the month again. Some countries have a break around this time, and business is usually a little calmer around this time of year. The perfect opportunity to spend some serious time into the games you love or maybe hate, just to compare them to the games you deem superior.
So, what games are you playing? Do they meet your expectations, any irks or complaints so far? Do you think the story made sense or is it just incomprehensible garbage? Does it run smoothly?
What games have you finished lately? Satisfied, ambiguous or disappointed? Let's hear.
Some other questions - did the platform match the game, and how? Soft/hardmodded? Physical, digital? Pirated everything and keeping it that way or are you
> buying
the game?

Playing Dragon's Dogma now. Honestly, is there a single RPG that isn't total jank? Only one I can think of is Fable, but Fable's overall quality isn't good enough to be a noteworthy case.
I feel like all Western RPG's take a lot of risks, letting players interact with the world/story and break sequence at the cost of stability. Most extreme example of this would be either Gothic or Fallout: New Vegas.
Meanwhile, JRPG's are on the other end of the spectrum. The world is completely static, you don't really "change the world" outside of the progression of the storyline, random objects lying around don't have any purpose to the plot nor are they particularly scripted for anything, and NPC's will barely react to anything you do that's out of the ordinary.
Dragon's Dogma is kinda somewhere in the middle. It borrows a lot from WRPGs, but it's definitely a JRPG at heart. The combat is really fun and I like how they're handling "open world" (a series of roads as opposed to large empty fields). But god damn the game is static. I feel like I'm doing things that should change outcomes and reactions but no one's really paying any attention.
Not really complaining about the game, just noticing that all RPG's have this level of jank to them that sticks out like a sore thumb.

Finally gave Fighterz a play as I’ve been in the mood for a fighting game lately and haven’t really enjoyed one since Super Street Fighter IV. It has really surprised me so far with how good it is. At first I was a little turned off by the auto-combo but it’s neat how there’s actually still a lot of depth underneath that system. Still haven’t quite figured out how to work in tag attacks to my combos.
The story mode is also really hyping me up for Granblue Versus and I’m still debating with myself if I’m gonna shell out the extra 20 for the limited edition of that game. I’ve liked the Granblue universe/art for years but can’t get into mobile games.
Other than that, beat Hyrule Warriors and playing the Layton series on the side. Been having a lot of fun.

>So, what games are you playing?
Going between MGS:TPP and Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate on the (((Switch))).
>Do they meet your expectations, any irks or complaints so far?
The same general complaints about TPP that others have: i.e. boring, monotonous gameplay, emtpy map, going to the same places over and over. Main complaint is how fucking long it takes to get enough god damn fuel resources to expand Mother Fucker Base (I only have one more platform to bulid.
MH, on the other hand, if fucking amazing. I don't mind the grind, because I actually have to try and learn new tactics that will actually help take down different monsters. I also have to pay attention to the little attribute differences in my weapons and armor in, and keep different, updated
sets for different hunts (same with item loadouts). I've heard that MHGU is not a good first MH because of the learning curve, but I don't mind going full autist for it.
>Do you think the story made sense or is it just incomprehensible garbage?
Don't care for the story (especially TPP).
>Does it run smoothly?
MH- Yes. But after a while on a 4k tv my eyes feel like bursting.
TPP- Depends on which PC I use, but runs smoothly enough.
>What games have you finished lately?
Rainbow Six: Vegas 2

Except for the helicopter fight at the end, it's a highly enjoyable game. I'd like another R6 game that's more like the originals, but I'd rather not monkeys paw one in (((current year))).

Battlefield 4
>Do they meet your expectations
It failed to my meet my expectations the moment I saw gameplay in 2013 E3
>any irks or complaints so far?
Almost 0 visual upgrade from BF3, sole exception being the water shader and vegetation. The game is infested with retarded gadgets like thermals, target detectors and broken vehicle upgrades. Also yet again weapons have like 40% of the muzzle velocity they do IRL. 7,62 NATO rifles have like 400m/s velocity. Bolt actions are useless due to the bullets dropping like potatoes at ranges beyond 50 meters and rocket launchers have shitty hollywood-tier muzzle velocity.
>Do you think the story made sense or is it just incomprehensible garbage?
Something about chinkland, something something feminism and aircraft carriers? I don't know, it was retarded.
>Does it run smoothly?
It runs well, except for when you activate your tank's APS while an attack jet is unloading it's 30mm on you. When that happens the framerate drops from a solid 60 down to the 20s because the devs are braindead and unironically render every single 30mm round explosion that hits your APS. That's >900 explosions per minute rendered simultaneously. Bravo DICE.
>What games have you finished lately?
None, because new singleplayer games suck massive dick. I don't even remember the last game I completed. Probably MGSV or Styx. Some stealth game for sure.
>Satisfied, ambiguous or disappointed?
Both mgsv and styx were alright. Though mgs was unfinished.

I've been trying to play Wind Waker, only been able to be motivated to play any video game in short bursts of an hour or two. It took me a while to play it because I needed to find some first party memory cards, a third party one I had kept shitting the bed. It's not bad, pretty ambitious for an exploration game, only recently got to the point of exploring with the boat. The experience is kind of unique, I'm hoping I can get into it more soon.

Last game i beat was Shakedown Hawaii, it's actually not too bad, using the 3ds nub to fire works amazing since it doesn't really have any kind of travel, the game isn't filled with obnoxious as fuck video game references nor does it have generic NES pixelshit. Emulating Burnout 3: Takedown on PCSX2, all gold medal run. Fucking HATE driving the F1 Racer, the other cars are made of cardboard but the F1 is fucking paper mache. Also getting really bored of the crash mode events (though tbh I've been playing this game for years), they get very linear.
Really interesting narrative in this game, though. Stryker is on air 24/7 advocating "burners" to race and crash their cars into traffic while playing emo-pop-punk songs about being unhinged. They could have done something interesting with the burner cult idea but it's never really brought up why this radio host is so fanatic about traffic accidents, or why so many people do what he says. It's probably better that way, though. I'm not looking for some Twisted Metal tragedy bullshit, I'm just trying to smash cars.

There's extra lore and info about bro Nier in the books, like how he had to sell and prostitute his shota body to make ends meet. In game though, there's not much difference.

Seconding this. Leifthrasir is a good game. Solid remake+remaster combo. I'd strongly recommend playing the classic mode first, since otherwise it's going to be hard from Leifthrasir's faster speed and improved enemy/boss variety. Still annoying that Atlus USA got rid of the Dragon's Crown reference by over-localizing Oswald's skill from Lunatic to Madness instead despite it already being in English.

I don't like the new Tanimura, since the new guy just looks too much like your standard Ryu Ga Gatoku character.
With Y4 i felt there was a balance in the new characters
Akiyama being the carefree guy
Saejima being the tough, grizzled, big guy 4U
and Tanimura being the new meat, he's been around the block but he's obviously out of his element, also, the shape of his face, the color of his hair not being a straight black, sells his story that he's the child of a Tokyo detective and a Thai prostitute that's been raised among immigrants most of his life, he manages to feel Japanese enough that he doesn't clash with the pre-established characters and setting this isn't Shenmue, after all. but also just off enough that he stands out.
The new guy just looks like someone ironed the wrinkles off of Akiyama and shaved his 5 o' clock shadow and gave him Saejima's bangs for good measure.

I've been playing all the Shinobi games, great series even if I didn't think much of Shadow Dancer both the arcade and the MD version.
Yesterday I've finished the PS2 game.
I don't really get the low review scores it has,it's a cool game.
While it does not excel in the graphics department (it's pretty bland looking),the character and monster design are top notch.
Hotsuma looks cool as hell, especially his scarf that follows him leaving a sick red trail.
The OST is good too,I enjoyed greatly the tune for stage 4 and the various boss themes).
But let's talk about the important stuff, the gameplay.
If you didn't know,Shinobi PS2 is an action game.
You control Hotsuma, the head of the Oboro clan, while you slice through hordes of his possessed former friends and other creatures.
The combat is very simple,as you have only one button for attacking.
Your other moves are a quick dash forward that can work as a dodge, the classic kunai throw (in this game they don't do much damage, but they paralize the enemy for a few seconds leaving them vulnerable),a rad ninja wall run (that becomes essential to the platforming in later stages) and a limited ninpou move that does a shitton of damage.
The main mechanics of the game are the "Tate" system and Akujiki's life drain.
Basically Akujiki is a demonic sword that eats people souls,so it feeds on a bar (that has the form of a magatama) constantly until it's empty, then it starts draining your life.
The only way to refill your souls is killing enemies.
Now the Tate comes into play: when you kill an enemy, its body stays still where he died for some seconds and your attacks increase in power.
When you kill every enemy in the screen Hotsuma does a finishing move and you obtain a lot of souls (and with some enemies even bonus items).
In other words, you build up a combo meter of killed enemies, increasing your strength with each kill.
Learning to exploit this system is vital in the many boss battles, because the raw damage you inflict on them with a 0 kill chain is too low to be called even a scratch.
The boss battles thus are all short and extremely intense while you dodge like crazy attacks that can defeat you in 3-4 hits and build up a long tate chain to kill them in the shortest time possible.
The only boss that lasted long for me was the final one,he had a fuckton of minions and screen filling attacks that fucked me up I won only after 30+ tries in a battle that lasted 22 minutes and 39 seconds.
The game's good and all,but I must say that it felt unpolished in some parts, like the camera that sometimes had trouble following the action and, most of all,the level design.
Every level had recycled rooms with different enemy placement, the worst offender of this was the last level (it felt very samey).
Not only that, the cutscenes and the finishing moves were very janky.
But all in all,it's a solid game, very short but hard and punishing (if you die in a level you must do it all over from the start).
I'm looking forward to Nightshade,if it improves the weakest parts of the game it can become something special.
I'm interested in the plot too,I want to know what happened to Hotsuma and the Akujiki. I must say that I took a liking to him,the dude has suffered a lot. Didn't expect the story to be so sad.
But before Nightshade I'm taking a break and playing The Lost Vikings Blizzard's best game.
Maybe I'll post what I think of it after finishing it,but I can say that I'm enjoying it (I'm on level 30 of 42,MD version).

Plutonia with Brutal Doom: SE on Black Metal (fast monsters and Strife fall damage flags on) is fantastic, some bullshit and lame levels but most are well designed and have some evil traps. Map 12 is my favorite so far. If you run, you're dead. The traps are clearly laid out before the player and if they hesitate, they are dead. The map is vertical and it works well with Brutal Doom: SE.

I put this one in the backburner for quite a while because the beginning of the game sucked so much, but it's getting better. The protagonist was kind of a whiny faggot but now he's dual wielding love interests, so I can't complain much anymore. The combat is still a major step down though. Also I can't take the game's themes about loneliness and connection seriously because I'm pretty sure that this timeline has had fully functional waifubots available for hundreds of years at this point.

The protagonist is insufferable and only "gets better" because there are two girls orbiting him, the actual gameplay is much worse, and the story is hard to take seriously. What do you actually like about the game then? Are you hoping it turns into a dating sim or what?

>MTG Arena
I found out about it last weekend and have probably spent a good 30 hours in it by now as I have not been able to play Magic since high school.
It's like Hearthstone but with Magic, even using Unity as an engine but it runs smoothly and I have not seen any bugs with cards acting weirdly yet.
The tutorial throws a total of 25 decks for free at you once you finish it, 5 mono and 10 dual colors, which I thought was very generous as they are very solid base decks for each faction.
Like Hearthstone can you earn in-game currency by doing daily quests to buy card packs with if you don't want to give WotC any money.
Solid recommendation if you want to play Magic but unable to play with anyone IRL or don't want to buy real cards.

Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition
I bought it. It's the first game I didn't pirate since Monster Hunter 4: Ultimate. At $20 for over 100 hours of content to 100% every achievement and every campaign on the hardest difficulty, it's one of the best valued games available. Even if you never touch PvP.
I want to get into multiplayer, but I have burn out after 100%ing the single player. I still mess around with bots though. Speaking of multiplayer, the lobby system sucks. It's pretty barebones and is only functional for joining multiplayer games. It's missing community features like in-depth player stats, dedicated player servers, and ranked ladders for specific competitive maps; spectating still has annoying bugs from release; the unranked lobby lists only a fraction of available games at a time; probably a number of other smaller nitpicks I don't care to notice; and the only updates to community interaction added so far from a multi-billion dollar company with a new(ish) smash-hit game is a player reporting system and profanity filter.
If Voobly, the Age of Empires II multiplayer client everyone used before the release of Definitive Edition, ever releases a mod adding DE's new QoL features and civ balance to the old game engine, like Voobly did with Age of Empires II: HD and Wololo Kingdoms, everyone would abandon Microsoft and use Voobly instead, like everyone did with HD and Wololo Kingdoms. But I doubt Microsoft will let such a thing happen again, unfortunately.

I just wish they integrated the time stopping better with bullets, enemies, platforming, etc etc, and made it a little less broken once you've got a few upgrades in it. And that it was longer! If you didn't like 1, you're NOT going to like 2. It's more or less a slightly improved version, but the story was replaced with anime filler. All you need to know is it introduces Not-Bass into the game. 3 is better, though the "Turn the battle network board on it's side and only give you 3 spaces to work with" combat is fundamentally flawed, so you can only get so much out of it. Also Operation Shooting Star is just Battle Network 1 with some updated graphics and a new boss fight shoehorned in.

I started as a pirate on nexerelin mod, it's a nice challenge early on because you have to pick your fights, but it quickly became a breeze due to regular faction payments and fucking insurance for each ship you lose. I was at 1 mil credits after a couple of hours, and now I've taken over two star systems in the top right corner of the inhabited part. It was a pretty fun run, but the line between a challenge and impossible matchup is often blurry; I run a light ship with Falcons being the biggest ship I have, mostly relying on various frigates and Hammerheads (so I have 20 burn pretty much always), and despite being able to outmaneuver the capitals I often run out of CR while the enemy's CR stays at a fixed level despite my guys harassing them constantly. Sometimes I feel that the playable battlefield is really too small.
Also, I've looked through the faction mods on the official forum, and all of them look dumb and uninspired, completely not fitting with vanilla factions. I also don't install ship mods as a principle, because there's too much stuff as it is and I don't need to skew the balance any further.

Raiding traders is a good way to earn cash early on, just learn to identify ship by their silhouettes to know what you're up against. I recommend Hammerhead destroyer for starting, because it can punch far above its weight, and some light frigates like Wolves for escort, even Kites if you don't have anything better. I've found it more effective to have more lighter ships than less, but bigger. The premade missions are a fun way to practice combat. I still make stupid mistakes like pushing too far alone and getting surrounded or failing to watch the flux and overloading, but it's relatively easy to figure out when you're fucked and when you have a chance.

1 mil is fuckall though, unless you're running a small fleet with a commission and don't try to colonize at all.
> I often run out of CR while the enemy's CR stays at a fixed level despite my guys harassing them constantly
CR is pretty much just time based from my understanding so yeah any capship will outCR your fleet easily unless you stack officer with combat endurance 3 and hardened subsystems on them.
>Also, I've looked through the faction mods on the official forum, and all of them look dumb and uninspired, completely not fitting with vanilla factions.
Meh, there's a couple that fit fairly well with vanilla for the most part like tiandong / tahlan / SWP, I just stopped caring and run like 50 mods, that and the challenges from IBB / HVB fleets is quite interesting.
Shit like ruthless sector also is quite interesting with the hyperspace encounters not to mention star rating for battle difficulty.
>I also don't install ship mods as a principle, because there's too much stuff as it is and I don't need to skew the balance any further.
I actually find that mods balance out the broken shit of vanilla by filling gaps in the roles and weaponry, granted you then run into the problem that some mods didn't think their shit would be come utterly fucking broken with another mods stuff, and in the end mass carrier is still AFK-tier especially if you have Diable / DME / Blackrock
You're also missing out on some neat basically player only ships that are actually fun to use like the Izanami / Yamato / Olympus / Ristreza etc
>>16862558
>>16862560
I usually start quite differently, If I start with a decent cruiser I try to go for small bounties (or just regular smuggling shit if I don't) to get the salvage skills up then assemble a survey fleet (5-8 collossus with survey / cargo hold mods and a bunch of fuel tankers), then you just fucking survey everything, you'll be rolling in BPs / nanoforge / AI cores before long, and probably also get a bunch of good derelicts (even debris field can have recoverable capitals in them), if you find the star clusters with the guaranteed Legions XIV it's pretty much GG you just have to work your way to a stock of longbows / daggers / HVDs and that's enough for anything that isn't invasion deathstacks / red beacon systems.

I played through the entire mainline Yakuza series back to back and am currently playing Judgment.
It's interesting seeing the evolution of the series from how they iterated on past installments. I didn't play the original two games, I instead played Kiwami and Kiwami 2, and 0 before them since I was aware those games referenced stuff that's in 0.
I think my favorite games have to be 0, 2, 4 and 5. 6 and 1 are cool as well, and I thought 6's story was a neat little wrap up for Kiryu's character arc. 3 was weird and a rollarcoaster ride of quality for sure, and by the end I could see why some people consider it the worst in the series while at the same time seeing why some people still enjoyed it. It had probably my favorite villain of the series, but also a really retarded plot twist and the worst story arc in any game I've ever seen, which also happens at the very beginning. It also has the worst hub area. Fuck Ryukyu. It sucked so hard they basically just did it again but better with Onomichi.
Yakuza 5 and 0 are the best in the series in my eyes, the former being the first to feature several gameplay improvements seen in 0 and the latter having the best plot and combat system in the series.
Also I love Pocket Circuit Fighter.
I'm currently playing Judgment and I do like how they improved on 6 and Kiwami 2's combat and applied it to an entirely new character with an entirely new moveset. I also like the detective gameplay.
Yakuza 7 is gonna come to the west too soon, and while I understand the gameplay change is controversial I'll probably enjoy it anyway. I've watched the trailers and I like Ichiban, and the gameplay doesn't look as tedious as a lot of people said it would be. Also they're calling it Yakuza: Like A Dragon here, and while I get that they want to differentiate it from the other games in the hopes it'll sell more I also don't think they realize most people already know it's Yakuza 7 in Japan and will probably still call it Yakuza 7.

Been playing through Nioh on my PS4
Added it to my library when it was "free" with my PS+ subscription but never downloaded it
So far am enjoying the game, the tutorial was brutal as I kept fucking up but then got my shit slapped when I finally managed to get to the first level, my first fuck-up was treating it like a souls game and trying to force my way through it
It took forever to reach and beat the Oni boss on the ship, while I'm proud I was able to do so solo I do have a few complaints with the game so far
1) WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU PENALIZED SO HARD FOR GOING LIGHT ARMOR, this was my biggest fuck-up so far, you lose more stamina/ki while blocking when you wear light armor but regain it faster. This is why I kept getting my defense broken and critically stabbed/beaten even if I conserved my stamina, this lead me to get mad at a fucking video game
2) HOLY FUCK WHY IS ONLINE MODE ON AT THE START, yep fuck-up #2 right here, didn't even know about summoning people who surprisingly still play this game to help me cheese the game, doing everything by yourself especially at the first level where you're underpowered was ass
I however don't have a 3rd large complaint, fighting yokai is a bit ass because they're stronger and able to regain their stamina almost instantly after being drained
looking forward to continuing the game this upcoming weekend, will be able to put in a lot more time then but for now if I somehow have some ample free time I'll play it here and there
thanks for reading my game rant

>So, what games are you playing?
Was looking for some kind of shooter with grinding and loot.
BL 3 - overall passable, many mechanics were improved over 2 especially spread, now it's almost like shooting the gun and not like a drunk guy reying to piss against the wind. Still top-quality gun is turning junk as soon as you level up. Pirated.
Bullet Girls Phantasia - it would be the thing, despite the outdated graphics, but of course weeb faggots who ported it have never seen a mouse. Unplayable. (Yes I\ve got the controller. No i'm not playing a shooter with it. No idea if it's even supported on PC.) Wasted time pirating it.
The Division 2 - despite ubishit, which means you're buying DLC or missing some of content, game's pretty good. It's your regular o-w MMO but with guns and it's pretty good as tps. Much better than destiny2(both share goblina-faced people though). At least there's way more content.
Story is something like "Murica fuk yeah! Are you bad enough dude to save comrade brezident? XD Black women stronk!"
Guns are from real life. There's 6 classes you can switch at any point. Scenery is very detailed. Never been to DC but it could as well look like that (after some good chimpout). AI also does pretty well at flanking you - it's probably the best i've seen.
Bought when it was on sale (or still is i don't know). Overall it turned out to be better than I expected from current-year AAA games.

leveling up and exploring shit was always the highlight of the game, where it falls apart was the loot aspect, itemization and massive being massively retarded. turning the game into destiny light not only in progression but how they handle the game (like outright nerfing shit then lying about it) doesn't help either. at this point they're worse than EA.
>Was looking for some kind of shooter with grinding and loot.
unironically anthem. picked it up out of curiosity. game's pretty fixed right now and you can find it pretty cheap. no dlc shit, pretty much everything you can grind for in game (even mtx shit) and progression makes sense - whatever you do contributes to you getting better shit or more loot rolls of the good shit, while doing the daily stuff for store currency. no more picking up shit only to drag it to a vendor to sell for currency that has zero fucking use.
plus the iron man gameplay is breddy gud with enough variety in builds and how differently every suit plays (the last thing I expected they'd get right).
story is eh but could be worse, in return the universe is interesting enough you wanna know more about it (probably because it wasn't written by some bioware hack but karpyshyn)

I've been on a not-Fallout kick. I started with ATOM RPG, a Russian-made Fallout clone with an…interesting translation. The general idea is the same as Fallout 1/2 aka the good ones, complete with not-SPECIAL, skills, and perks. The story is set, predictably, in Russia, in a timeline where the world ended before the USSR had a chance to collapse. Combat and progression is nearly a 1 for 1 copy of FO1/2.
After finishing that, I moved on to Underrail. I'm currently finishing up the expansion and then probably going to steamroll whatever's left of the main story. This is a game I wish I had tried sooner. The mechanics are much more finely balanced than ATOM or FO1/2, and the game requires a competent build to actually stand a chance. Min/maxing is almost mandatory.
After Underrail, I don't know what to move on to next. Maybe I'll play FO1 or 2 for the thousandth time, or NV. Hopefully a new not-Fallout comes out soon.

<the "antagonist" WAU and the goal launch the ARK were completely unrelated, if they were related i didn't get how
<Simon was more talkative and calm than he should've been
<endings should either get switched, eliminate the post-credits one or make it an actual coin toss
It's certainly one of the best exploration of the themes it presented i've seen, the ending right before the credits hits hard, even if it was to be expectedperhaps it would have been better if it wasn't made such a big deal earlier
